Thomas David Heaton, an English goalkeeper who plays for Premier League team Manchester United, was born on April 15, 1986. Chester-born native of Cheshire Heaton began his football career playing in goal and midfield for Wrexham, but on July 8, 2002, he signed as a trainee after making 20 appearances for the Manchester United Under-17 team in the previous two seasons. He won the FA Youth Cup in 2002–2003 despite serving as Luke Steele’s backup throughout the entire competition and became a regular in the Under-17 squad. He made his reserve team debut the following season on October 2, 2003, when the team defeated Birmingham City 3-1 at home in the Premier Reserve League.
Heaton was on the bench for the Manchester Senior Cup final against Manchester City at the end of the 2003–04 season, but he still won a winner’s medal. Heaton was selected to start for the Manchester United reserve squad during Stan Ternent’s testimonial on August 17, 2004, and he did so during the 2004–05 campaign. In the 76th minute, Heaton took the position of Luke Steele, who had earlier taken the place of Tim Howard. [Needs citation] Heaton played in goal for 17 of the team’s 28 games in the Premier Reserve League North and 12 of the 22 games in the Premier Reserve League Central, respectively, as the team won both divisions by nine and five points. After the 2007–2008 season, Heaton made the decision to sign a loan agreement with Cardiff City of the Championship for the entire 2008–2009 season. He was chosen by manager Dave Jones to start the season as the team’s goalkeeper instead of Peter Enckelman. However, he was unable to play because of a thigh muscle tear that might have required five weeks of recovery. When Stuart Taylor, a loanee, returned, Heaton initially found himself on the bench behind him.
However, following a 6-0 defeat to Preston North End, Heaton took Taylor’s place for the final three games of the season. Having failed to keep Cardiff in the play-off positions, he moved back to Manchester United at the conclusion of the campaign. Following his return from QPR, Heaton joined Rochdale on November 13, 2009, and he stayed there through December 31, 2009. He made his debut in a 3-2 loss to Chesterfield on November 14, 2009. After another extension shifted the loan’s payback deadline ahead to January 31, 2011, the loan was subsequently extended until January 23, 2010. Heaton only gave up ten goals in his twelve games with Rochdale, including four shutouts, and he only lost one game.
Heaton was initially loaned to Swindon Town at the beginning of the 2005–06 season due to his performance for the reserves until January 1, 2006. Heaton turned down a Lee Johnson penalty in his second league contest against Yeovil Town. Against Wycombe Wanderers in a League Cup game, Heaton made his professional debut. While at Swindon, he played in nearly 20 games and was described as “one for the future” by manager Iffy Onuora. Heaton was allocated to Royal Antwerp for the remainder of the season when Ritchie Jones was called back from there after Manchester United rejected an offer from Huddersfield Town.
Heaton ultimately made his way back to Manchester. Heaton replaced the injured Edwin van der Sar for the whole 2007–2008 Manchester United first-team season. Heaton began his professional career with Manchester United’s development program but was unable to crack the main squad. Before being released by Manchester United in July 2010, he spent time on loan with Swindon Town, Royal Antwerp, Cardiff City, Queens Park Rangers, Rochdale, and Wycombe Wanderers. He was released after making a permanent move to Cardiff and failing to crack the first team. He then agreed to join Bristol City on a one-year deal with a two-year option, but he turned it down in favor of a move to Burnley in May 2013. After six years there, he joined Aston Villa in 2019. After two years at Aston Villa, he returned to Manchester United in July 2021. Heaton has been a part of senior England squads since 2015. He has previously represented his country at the under-16 through under-21 levels. He ultimately made his senior debut on May 27, 2016, in a friendly game against Australia.
He took part in every game up until late November, with the exception of the League Cup match against Swansea City, where Enckelman replaced him. On November 22, 2008, Heaton was forced to depart Cardiff’s 2-1 away loss to Plymouth Argyle due to an injury. With Enckelman in net, the squad embarked on a more than a two-month winning streak, and Heaton’s injury ultimately cost him his spot on the roster. Heaton took over in goal after Enckelman required knee surgery in February and was named man of the match in a 4-0 loss against Arsenal on February 16.
