Tom Berenger is an American actor who is most recognised for the parts he has played in action movies. Thomas Michael Moore was the name given to Berenger when he was born in Chicago to an Irish Catholic family. The senior Berenger worked as a printer for the Chicago Sun-Times at the family business. Berenger has a sister, Susan. Because there was already one actor by the name “Tom Moore” in the Actors’ Equity Association, he decided to go by the name “Berenger” as his professional name. This name was chosen in honour of a classmate.
In 1967, he received his diploma from Rich East High School, which was located in Park Forest, Illinois. Berenger attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, where he majored in journalism, but after graduation, he opted to pursue a career in acting instead. After beginning his career in community theatre, he relocated to New York City in the 1970s to pursue a career in the theatre. Berenger has been married three times, and each of those marriages has resulted in the birth of a child. Both Vancouver and Beaufort, South Carolina, are his homes at the moment.
When pressed to choose his favourite movie, Tom ultimately chose Betrayed in an interview that took place in 1996. In that movie, Tom portrayed a bigoted farmer who threatened Debra Winger. The movie dealt with a delicate subject, which caused spectators to squirm uncomfortably in their chairs, and many reviewers were unsure whether to give it a positive or negative review since they did not know how to evaluate it. Tom is said to have said something to the effect that the picture “was precisely what it was designed to be.”
Tom Michael Moore was born on May 31st, 1949, in Chicago, and he excelled not just in academics but also in a variety of sports. In addition to being proficient in Spanish and Italian, he is also an avid collector and has a strong interest in the history of the United States. When he was placed in a theatrical production of Who is Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, his professional path was irreversibly altered, despite the fact that he had entered the University of Missouri with the intention of majoring in journalism.
Before moving to New York City in the middle of the 1970s to pursue a career in acting, Tom worked in several repertory theatres in the surrounding area. The Rose Tattoo by Tennessee Williams was adapted into a play that he performed for the first time at the Long Wharf Theater in New Haven, Connecticut. It was one of his first major roles on stage.
In addition, he performed in the production of A Streetcar Named Desire with the Milwaukee Repertory Company when it was on tour in Japan. His first role in a movie was in the 1977 film “Looking For Mr. Goodbar,” which featured Diane Keaton. He played a deranged attractive kid. Fans of soap operas may know Tom from his role as the replacement for Timmy Siegal on One Life to Live.
Tom began to acquire recognition, and up to the current day, he has continued to feature in approximately one movie or television movie each year. Fans who had come to expect Berenger to play strong, masculine, ladies’ man roles such as Sam in The Big Chill (1983) were shocked and enthusiastic about Berenger’s performance of sociopath Sergeant Barnes in Platoon, which earned him an Oscar nomination (1986). Tom’s popularity in the 1980s was cemented at the box office by films such as Major League, Last Rites, Someone to Watch Over Me and Shoot to Kill, all of which demonstrated Tom’s versatility as an actor.
Tom continued to play roles that were unpredictable, and he moved easily between the film and television industries, making cameo appearances as Don the plumber in the final two episodes of the television series Cheers, for which he was nominated for an Emmy Award. Returning to the world of cinema, he assisted his good friend and filmmaker Oliver Stone by making a cameo appearance in the film Born on the Fourth of July in the role of a recruiting officer.
Tom was not one to confine himself to only performing, so in 1995 he made his debut as a producer and writer with the TNT movie Avenging Angel. His goal was to start telling stories via film that he considered important enough to be conveyed. After that, he went on to create and perform in the TNT television miniseries Rough Riders, which went on to win an Emmy award in 1997. The series depicts Teddy Roosevelt and his troops during the Spanish-American War. It was a hit with viewers and went on to become the miniseries with the greatest ratings in the history of cable television.
Tom continues to feature in films for both television and cinema, the most notable of which being his depiction of Bear Bryant in ESPN’s made-for-television movie The Junction Boys, which received widespread critical praise and garnered high viewer ratings. His high-rated miniseries DreamWorks’ Into the West in 2005 and Steven King’s Nightmares and Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King in 2006 were both fan favourites and had high ratings.
His 2003 television series Peacemakers in the United States was also warmly received by viewers. Beginning in 2007, he was a main cast member on the critically acclaimed television show October Road, which aired on ABC. Tom had a role in the acclaimed science fiction thriller Inception, which was released in 2010. Tom received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Mini-Series or Movie for his role as Uncle Jim Vance in Hatfields and McCoys in 2012. This award was well deserved.
