After receiving his degree from MIT, Masamune went on to feature as “Shredder” in the film “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” directed by Michael Bay (2014). Tony Award–winning stage directors Mary Zimmerman (Goodman Theatre) and Dan Sullivan have both directed him in big roles on stage at various points in his career (Williamstown Theatre Festival). He has worked along with Tony Award-winning playwrights such as A.R. Gurney (Williamstown Theatre Festival), among others.
When it comes to acting in works that are adaptations of previously written tales, such as novels or comic books, there is always potential for numerous interpretations of a single character. This is especially true in the case of comic book adaptations. Characters like Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man have provided one of the clearest illustrations of this trend over the course of many decades.
More recently, actor Tohoru Masamune has had a similar experience. In the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014), he was the first actor to assume the role of the Shredder. David McCharen gave the character of Master Splinter new life in the feature film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which was released in 1990. Prior to that time, no other actor had played the part in a movie since James Saito.
During an interview with Masamune, a lot of questions were raised about how much he enjoys comic books and how much he likes the character Shredder. In the event that he had the chance to perform in a Marvel movie, one of the questions that was posed to him concerned the Marvel character that he most desires to portray. As a kind of reaction, he expressed the desire to test his mettle against The Ancient One from Doctor Strange, should the occasion present itself.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise has had a profound impact on younger audiences for decades because of the show’s emphasis on brotherhood, high-energy action, and humorous gags. After being created as a comic book in the 1990s by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the series is now being produced as an animated series for the first time. The gloomy origins of the series have been replaced with bright colors in this iteration of the franchise. The series went on to become the massive success that it is in the media to this day.
In the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, who plays the villainous Shredder? William Fichtner was revealed to have been cast in the role of the titular bad guy, a man known as Eric Sachs who would assume the identity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ greatest adversary when Paramount began announcing the cast for this Michael Bay-produced reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. This infuriated and distressed the audience.
They were incensed that a guy of European descent was going to take the place of a beloved Japanese figure. On the other hand, since the film is only now opening in cinemas, moviegoers are getting a glimpse of a very different sort of Shredder on the big screen. You may recognize Tohoru Masamune, a Japanese actor who appeared in the film “Inception” directed by Christopher Nolan. He plays one of the characters.
Does this mean that William Fichtner is not, in fact, Shredder? Why is there so much secrecy? The movie does not include any shocking reveals. The identity of Shredder is revealed immediately early, therefore there is no suspense around his introduction. Why did Paramount not want us to know that the actual Shredder was featured in the film? Even Tohoru Masamune, who has been a fan of the series for a very long time, does not know the answer to that question.
Is it possible that fans who are furious about William Fichtner’s upcoming takeover of the series’ most well-known nemesis prompted the decision to bring him in for reshoots? Possibly. We only recently had a chance to get up with Tohoru Masamune, and during that time he told us his tale. During the whole filming, he was not permitted to reveal to his friends and family that he was portraying Shredder. Up until this very day, he was required to keep the whole event a secret. Which is unique by its very nature.
Why not hold off on revealing the identity of the person playing this new iteration of Shredder until after the weekend has passed? Nobody is aware of it. Tohoru Masamune is a completely different person from his guise in the Hollywood film industry. He is a person who is considerate, courteous, clever, and exceedingly cheerful. He is just thrilled to be a member of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! And we couldn’t be happier to have him play the role of the antagonist. It was a tremendous treat to speak with him, and the following is our exchange regarding his work and the confidentiality requirements that came with it.
The Shredder has been the primary foe of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for many years, and this did not change in the film adaptation of the franchise that came out in 2014. Although it was first said that William Fichtner’s character, Eric Sacks, played the role of the Shredder in the movie, audiences quickly learned that another person really possessed the identity of the character. In the reboot, Tohoru Masamune portrayed the role of the antagonist, but in the sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, which will be released in 2016, a different actor will be donning the massive metal samurai armor that Tohoru Masamune wore in the previous film.
According to Variety, the role of Shredder in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 will be taken up by actor Brian Tee, who will replace Masamune. Tee will make an appearance in the movie along with the rest of the original cast as well as newcomers such as Stephen Amell (who will be portraying Casey Jones) and Tyler Perry (who is playing Baxter Stockman). It is still unknown if Tee’s Shredder will be the major antagonist in the sequel or more of a sideline bad guy; nonetheless, with Stockman and Bebop & Rocksteady guaranteed to appear, this film is going to include a plethora of Turtle villains.
