TobyMac was born on 22 October 1964. TobyMac is the stage name of TobyMac MacGraw, a producer, songwriter, singer, and recording artist from the United States who specializes in Christian hip-hop. Since the widespread belief that Christian music is not as popular as traditional hip-hop, Toby’s songs are a refreshing change of pace. Toby was up in a typical Christian household in Virginia, where he was born. He always loved music, even when he was young. Toby and two other friends, Kevin Max Smith and Michael Tait, formed the band DC Talk in the late ’80s. DC Talk has released a series of highly regarded albums.
After the band the three were in taking a break from making music together, Toby began his solo career. His debut studio album, titled Momentum, came out in 2001. Toby’s album was successful because it fused traditional Christian music with urban rock and rhythms. Toby has released six successful studio albums and a Christmas CD under his own name since then. One of the albums is titled “Christmas in Diverse City.” Toby’s solo work has been recognized with seven “Grammy” Awards, and his albums have sold over 10 million copies worldwide.
Toby has also written a few books with Kevin Max and Michael Tait for their “Jesus Freaks” series. Toby is the author of these books. TobyMac was born to two devout Christians on October 22, 1964, in a Virginia suburb. Toby’s early exposure to contemporary music piqued his interest, and he soon found himself enjoying a wide range of genres, from rap and hip-hop to rock. He went to a religious camp when he was 13 and was inspired by so-called “Biblical” teachings. Very few musicians before him had attempted to incorporate biblical passages into their work.
In 1983, he saw the musician Sting and his band, “The Police,” on tour, and this experience served as a major inspiration for him. He was immediately taken by the tune and intrigued by the concept that music might be both beautiful and disturbing. After finishing high school at a local institution, he decided he wanted to make a career out of music and set out to find like-minded individuals with whom he could begin his endeavor. Toby and Michael Tait were high school classmates who, in 1987, formed the band DC Talk to pursue their mutual love of music.
Once Kevin Max Smith joined them at their alma mater, ‘Liberty University,’ things started making sense. They were schoolmates at the same establishment. The band decided to embark on a national tour after the success of their debut studio album “DC Talk,” which was released in 1989. This contributed to elevating their profile in the public eye. Nu Thang, their second studio album, was released in 1990, following the massive success of their debut effort. The sales of the follow-up album were higher than those of the debut, “DC Talk,” earning it gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.
Their third album, “Free at Last,” was even more successful than their previous album, “Nu Thang,” continuing their run of success. Eventually, the record reached the sales threshold that earned it platinum status from the RIAA. Their appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” was the tipping point that propelled them into the mainstream attention of the American audience. The band had a grungy aesthetic that incorporated rap with contemporary Christian music for a fresh, original take on the genre. In 1995, with the release of Jesus Freak, they had already achieved the pinnacle of their success.
Following the album’s “double-platinum” certification, the enormous “Jesus Freak Tour” set out to spread the music even more. The release of their third and final studio album, Supernatural, in 1998 was another triumph in the band’s long and storied career. In 2002, “DC Talk” was named “the most popular openly Christian ensemble of all time” by “The Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music.” Save for “DC Talk” and “Supernatural,” all of their albums have won many “Grammy” awards.
A record titled “Solo” was released by the band in the early 2000s, just before its three members went their separate ways. It featured two new songs from each member’s solo endeavor. By that time, the three of them had separated their efforts and were working on separate projects. Toby’s debut solo album, Momentum, debuted at #1 on the “Billboard Heatseekers” chart when it was released in 2001. Toby’s style eventually evolved into a modern hybrid of rap and grunge.
The soundtrack for the video game Crackdown featured all three songs as well as the single “Momentum.” A number of Grammy and Dove Award nominations and wins were tallied for the album. Toby’s 2004 album, “Welcome to Diverse City,” was stylistically similar to his earlier work but also incorporated some reggae elements.
On the Billboard 200, the album debuted at position #10. Toby was named Artist of the Year at the Dove Awards in part for his stellar work on the album. “Alive and Transported” was the title of Toby’s first live CD as a solo artist. It came out in 2008 and was considered for a Grammy as well as a GMA Dove. Both honors went to Toby. The album features Toby’s original songs alongside cover versions of several ’90s hits by the band ‘DC Talk.
