T-Boz, also known as Tionne Tenes Watkins, is a well-known American singer and songwriter who specializes in pop, R&B, hip hop, and soul music. She was born into a performing arts family and received a sickle cell anemia diagnosis when she was a young child. However, despite all of her hardships, she remained determined to pursue a career as a performer. When she met Crystal Clear and Liza Lopez at the age of 20, her goal started to come true. They eventually came together to form the hip-hop trio known as “TLC.” They were well-known all over the world after their debut album, “Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip,” became a huge smash and peaked at number 14 on the US Billboard 200. It was followed by the similarly popular “CrazySexyCool,” “FanMail,” “3D,” and then “TLC.” Aside from them, she has also written two books, produced films, appeared in films and on television, and released a few solo singles.
Tionne Tense Watkins was born in a family of African Americans, Native Americans, and Irish origin on April 26, 1970, in Des Moines, Iowa. James and Gayle Watkins, her parents, were both singers and musicians. Watkins simultaneously collaborated with Lisa Lopes and Rozonda Thomas and recorded two solo songs, “Touch Me” in 1996 and “My Getaway” in 2000. She made her film debut in 1998 with Hype Williams’ movie “Belly.” She had previously made two appearances in the television sitcom “Living Single.” Rapper Mack 10 and Tionne Watkins tied the knot on August 19, 2000. Chase Anela Rolison is the name of the couple’s daughter. In November 2004, they got a divorce. In spite of the fact that she first asked for a restraining order against Mack 10, she went to Los Angeles in 2012 so that Chase could be nearer to her father. Chance, a boy born in March 2016, was adopted by her in May 2016.
Lopes passed suddenly on April 25, 2002, and part of his recorded work was left behind. In the end, Watkins and Thomas chose to incorporate some of Lopes’ recorded works into their upcoming album, “3D.” On October 10, 2002, it was made available in Europe; on November 12, 2002, it was made available in the US. In its first week of availability, “3D” sold 143,000 copies, making its US Billboard 200 debut at number six and peaking at number four on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. They received two Grammy Award nominations for it and the RIAA certified it platinum.
They didn’t make a new album after “3D” for fifteen years, but in 2013, they released the compilation album “20.” She produced the biographical “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story” and starred in the reality documentary miniseries “Totally T-Boz” in the same year. In 2017, “TLC,” their fifth and last album, was made available. In the same year, she also released her second book, “A Sick Life: TLC ‘n Me: Stories from On and Off the Stage.”
When she was three years old, her parents got divorced. She was thereafter nurtured by her mother, who instilled in her the values of “confidence and independence.” They relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where her maternal grandmother had lived when she was nine years old. Tionne Watkins learned of Crystal Clear’s plans to launch an all-girl group in 1990 that would resemble Bell Biv DeVoe and have a tomboyish, hip-hop image. Eventually, she showed up for an audition and joined the trio of musicians, Lisa Lopes being the third. They quickly began collaborating with Jermaine Dupri and Rico Wade on demo tape material under the name “2nd Nature.” Watkins met Perri “Pebbles” Reid, the head of the management and production business Pebbitone, and was able to set up an audition with her in the interim.
Reid, who was then married to Antonio Reid, set up an audition with the local record company LaFace Records, which was founded by Kenneth “Babyface” Edmund and Reid. She also altered the name of the group to TLC, where “T” stood for Tionne, “L” for Lisa, and “C” for Crystal.
Watkins and Lopes won Antonio Reid’s admiration, but Clear, who was ultimately replaced by Rozonda Thomas in April 1991, did not. Very quickly, TLC remained to be the acronym for the names Watkins, Lopes, and Thomas as Watkins changed to “T-Boz,” “Left-Eye,” and “Chilli,” respectively.LaFace Records issued their debut record, “Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip,” on February 25, 1992. It sold six million copies worldwide and reached at number 14 on the US Billboard 200. It was also awarded quadruple platinum RIAA certification.
Three tracks from “Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip” made the Billboard Hot 100’s top ten: “Baby-Baby-Baby,” which peaked at number two, “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg,” which peaked at number six, and “What About Your Friends,” which peaked at number seven. Additionally, “Baby-Baby-Baby” reached its highest point at the top of Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart.
The group began creating their second album, “CrazySexyCool,” in 1993. However, Lisa’s personal issues delayed its completion, and it wasn’t released until September 15, 1994. The record, which is a certified Diamond, assisted TLC in overtaking all other girl groups.
Despite reaching the top spot, TLC was compelled to declare bankruptcy due to subpar contracts they signed in 1991. The crew eventually renewed their contract with the same business and resumed their operations. She suffered sickle cell anemia when she was a child, which required her to spend a lot of time in hospitals. However, she had a fascination for dance since she was a young child, and she always imagined herself as a performer.
She started working as a hair model while she was in her teens and later worked as a manicurist and shampoo girl at a well-known Atlanta hair salon. She frequently went to the well-liked skating rink Jellybeans.
