Bio

Timothy Walter Burton (born August 25, 1958) is a film director, producer, writer, and artist from the United StatesBurton used to produce short films in his backyard on 2101 N Evergreen Street using basic stop motion animation techniques or filming on 8 mm film without sound when he was a preteen (one of his oldest known juvenile films is The Island of Doctor Agor, which he made when he was 13 years old). Burton attended Burbank’s Providencia Elementary School and then Burbank High School, but he was not a particularly bright student. At Burbank High, he was a member of the water polo team.

After graduating from Burbank High School, Burton studied character animation at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, Santa Clarita. Burton made the short films Stalk of the Celery Monster and King and Octopus as a student at CalArts.  Burton’s career began in the 1980s when his film Stalk of the Celery Monster drew the attention of Walt Disney Productions’ animation branch, which gave him an animator’s apprenticeship at the studio.

On films like The Fox and the Hound (1981), Tron (1982), and The Black Cauldron (1983), he worked as an animator, storyboard artist, graphic designer, art director, and concept artist (1985). His concept work was never used in the final films. In 1982, while working at Disney, Burton created his first short film, Vincent, a six-minute black-and-white stop motion picture based on a poem by Burton about a young kid who fantasises about being his hero Vincent Price, with Price himself providing narration. Rick Heinrichs, whom Burton had met while working in Disney’s concept art department, produced the film.

The film premiered at the Chicago Film Festival and was then released for two weeks in one Los Angeles theatre opposite the teen drama Tex. The next year, Burton released Hansel and Gretel, a Japanese-themed rendition of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale for the Disney Channel that culminates in a kung fu fight between Hansel and Gretel and the witch. Prints of the film are incredibly difficult to come by, having only aired once in 1983 at 10:30 p.m. on Halloween and then being swiftly shelved, fuelling accusations that the project never existed. The film was first shown in public in 2009 at the Museum of Modern Art, and then again in 2011 at LACMA as part of a Tim Burton art exhibit.  In 2012, it was shown once more at the Seoul Museum of Art.  Frankenweenie, Burton’s next live-action short film, was released in 1984. It’s about a small child who tries to resuscitate his dog after it’s been hit by a car.

Shot in black-and-white. Following the completion of Frankenweenie, Disney dismissed Burton on the grounds that he had spent the company’s resources on a film that was too dark and terrifying for children to watch.release in 2000 that he was sold on Burton’s style as soon as the short began. With a successful stage play at The Groundlings and the Roxy that was later adapted into an HBO special,

Pee-wee Herman acquired mainstream appeal. Pee-Big wee’s Adventure was made on a $8 million budget and grossed more than $40 million in North American theatres. Burton, a fan of the odd musical group Oingo Boingo, enlisted the help of lyricist Danny Elfman for the soundtrack. Except for Ed Wood, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Elfman has scored every Tim Burton film since then, with the exception of Ed Wood (1994), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Corpse Bride (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), and Frankenweenie (2012)

the musical adventure film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), and the fantasy films Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2010). (2016). Burton has collaborated with actors Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter (his previous domestic partner) as well as composer Danny Elfman on numerous occasions (who has composed scores for all but three of the films Burton has directed).and restaurants he visited. He has been nominated for two Academy Awards and three BAFTA Awards, as well as winning an Emmy and a Golden Globe Award.
