Bio

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, better known by his stage name The Weeknd, is a Canadian rhythm-and-blues singer and songwriter. He was born on February 16, 1990, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Weeknd is perhaps best known for his explicit songs about sex and drugs, many of which were autobiographical. He is also known for his soaring falsetto and its singular tremolo. Amharic was Tesfaye’s first language, which he learned from his mother and grandmother, who arrived in Canada from Ethiopia in the 1980s.

He dropped out of school when he was in the 11th grade and moved out of the house, committing himself entirely to wild partying instead. Tesfaye was able to get a job at American Apparel in the end, and at the same time, he started composing songs about doing drugs, having casual sexual encounters, and feeling alone. It was then that he became acquainted with the musician and producer Jeremy Rose, and the two of them began collaborating.

Their working together resulted in the creation of three ethereal songs with lyrics that were partially sung and partially rapped. These songs were titled “The Morning,” “Loft Music,” and “What You Need.” Late in 2010, audio recordings of the songs ascribed to The Weeknd were published on the video-sharing website YouTube. The tracks’ popularity skyrocketed when Drake, a Canadian rapper, posted links to them on his blog. Tesfaye had better access to recording possibilities as a result of Drake’s admiration and support, and by March of 2011, he had put together a nine-song mixtape called House of Balloons, which he made available as a free download to the public. The album received positive reviews and was included among the final three candidates for the Polaris Music Award in Canada.

In July of that year, Tesfaye made his first public performance as The Weeknd at a nightclub located in the city of Toronto. In 2011, he distributed an additional two free mixtapes under the titles Thursday and Echoes of Silence. In addition to that, he was a contributor to Drake’s album “Take Care,” which was released in 2011.

In September 2012, The Weeknd entered into a partnership with Republic Records. After two months, he came out with the album Trilogy, which included remastered versions of the songs that were featured on the three mixtapes. The album was a huge success. Unfortunately, The Weeknd’s debut studio album, Kiss Land (2013), was not successful in breaking through to audiences outside of his core audience.

The Weeknd subsequently requested assistance in the songwriting process from his record label. The end result was a working connection with Max Martin, a hit-making Swedish producer, and a duet with pop diva Ariana Grande called “Love Me Harder.” The song, which was first released in 2014, managed to reach the top 10 charts. The following three smash songs released by The Weeknd were “Earned It,” “The Hills,” and “Can’t Feel My Face,” all of which were included in his album titled Beauty Behind the Madness (2015).

The Weeknd was awarded Canada’s Juno Award for artist of the year in 2016, making it the second year in a row that he has received this honor. In addition, The Weeknd won four additional Junos in 2016, including album of the year. In addition, he was presented with Grammy Awards for “Earned It” which received the award for best R&B performance, and “Beauty Behind the Madness” receiving the award for Best Urban Contemporary Album. In addition, “Earned It,” a song that was included on the soundtrack for the movie “Fifty Shades of Grey” (2015), was considered for an Oscar nomination in the year 2016.

The Weeknd’s popularity continued to rise with the release of his album Starboy (2016), which included collaborations with Kendrick Lamar and Daft Punk. It was successful in the marketplace and won a Grammy for being the best urban contemporary album. His subsequent album, which was titled My Beloved Melancholy (2018), was a throwback to the gloomy and atmospheric elements of his previous work.

After Hours (2020), a dramatic and contemplative album received positive reviews from music critics and, similar to his first effort, shot straight to the top of the charts. In 2021, The Weeknd was one of the performers at the Super Bowl halftime show. The next year saw the release of his fifth studio album, titled Dawn FM. The piece, which was narrated by Jim Carrey, was referred to as a “dance party in purgatory,” and it was labeled as such.

The album was released at the beginning of what is shaping up to be a very busy year for The Weeknd. He is scheduled to make his series debut in the as-of-yet-unscheduled HBO series The Idol, and topline his first feature film, which he is also co-writing and co-executive producing alongside director Trey Edward Shults (It Comes At Night). Wednesday actress Jenna Ortega will co-star and also executive produce.

Following 2021’s remix of “Save Your Tears,” as well as his feature on her 2014 single “Love Me Harder,” and “Off the Table” from Ari’s most recent album, 2020’s Positions, the Weeknd and Ariana Grande were back in our ears last week with the remix of their 2016 hit single “Die For You.” This marked the dynamic duo’s fourth collaboration, following up 2021’s remix of “Save Your Tears,” as well as his remix of “Save Your Tear

Tomas Mier, a writer for Rolling Stone, has come under criticism for his response to a tweet by The Weeknd in which the musician criticizes the magazine. In the tweet, Mier defended the newspaper. On Friday, March 3, 2023, Mier sent a response to the tweet by attaching a photo of a monkey. The terrible encounter took occurred after the newspaper published an article alleging that there are problems with the production of Abel Makkonen Tesfaye aka The Weeknd’s forthcoming series for HBO titled The Idol.
