Teófimo Andrés López Rivera is an American professional boxer who was born on July 30, 1997. He previously held the WBA, WBO, and The Ring magazine belts from October 2020 to November 2021. He was the undisputed lightweight world champion from 2019 to 2021. He represented Honduras at the 2016 Summer Olympics as an amateur. López won the U.S. Olympic Trials, but Carlos Balderas had already qualified for the competition as the lightweight champion of AIBA, so López was aware going into the trials that at best he could only serve as Balderas’ backup.
Since his parents are from Honduras, López was able to make the squad there and earn a spot in Rio by making it all the way to the Olympic qualifying round for the Americas. The 2015 National Golden Gloves were also won by López. López represented Honduras in the men’s lightweight competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He lost to eventual silver medalist Sofiane Oumiha in the competition. In October 2016, Lopez signed a contract with Top Rank. In November of the same year, he made his professional debut on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Jessie Vargas fight.
In December 2018, after compiling a perfect 10-0 record, he made his debut by defeating veteran Mason Menard in a knockout of the year contender. In the final eliminator for the IBF world lightweight title on July 19, 2019, López, who was ranked #4 by the IBF at the time, took on the unbeaten Masayoshi Nakatani, who was ranked #3. López used his right hand to put Nakatani to the ground in the fourth round, but the referee called it a slip. López’s career’s first 12-round fight ended in a unanimous decision win for him with scores of 118-110, 118-110, and 119-109, securing a matchup with IBF champion Richard Commey. On December 14, 2019, López faced off against Richard Commey, the IBF lightweight champion.
After connecting on Commey with a powerful right hand and knocking him out in the second round via a technical knockout, Lopez claimed the IBF title in a spectacular way. Vasiliy Lomachenko, another lightweight champion, joined Lopez in the ring after the bout was over, and they posed for a picture. López responded, “You guys know who I want,” without specifically mentioning Lomachenko when asked about his ambitions for his upcoming fight and a potential unification match with the Ukrainian fighter. Vasiliy Lomachenko, who holds the titles of the WBA, WBO, and The Ring, will face López on October 17 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas after agreeing to the fight in September 2020.
It was the first significant altercation since the COVID-19 pandemic breakout. López defeated the well-regarded Ukrainian by unanimous decision to unify the lightweight class and keep his perfect record despite the absence of a live audience. The judges’ scores were 116-112, 117-111, and 119-109. López stayed behind his jab and went to the body in the opening seven rounds, receiving little resistance from his opponent. Lomachenko started to come out more aggressively and land more blows in the second half. The most an opponent has ever landed on Lomachenko in a round was 50 of 98 punches delivered by López in the last round. CompuBox statistics show that Lomachenko connected on 141 of 321 attempts, while López connected on 183 of 659.
Prior to being repeatedly postponed owing to issues with López testing positive for COVID-19[32] and disagreements over the fight’s location, López’s first defense of his unified lightweight championship was slated for June 5, 2021, against unbeaten challenger George Kambosos Jr. Having gone to purse bidding, Triller’s winning price of more than US$6 million caused a rift between Lopez and Top Rank’s head promoter, Bob Arum.
On October 6, it was revealed that the IBF had determined Triller to be in breach of its contractual obligation to stage the fight and that its rights would be awarded to Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom as the second-highest bidder. As a result, the fight will be broadcast exclusively live on the streaming service DAZN. Kambosos knocked the champion out in the opening round of the fight despite being a 13 to 1 pre-fight betting underdog. López returned the favor by knocking out Kambosos in the tenth round, but he was defeated by a split decision in the end. One judge gave the fight a score of 114–113 to Lopez, while the other two gave Kambosos Jr. victories of 115–112 and 115–111.
Because “everyone was being a dick to me, my father,” López declined to give Lomachenko a rematch. A rematch clause was not something that Lomachenko wanted to include in our contract. Despite not possessing the WBC title, Lopez proclaimed after his victory that he is the undisputed lightweight champion. The ‘Franchise’ version of the WBC championship earned by López against Lomachenko is not widely recognized by the boxing community, hence many boxing analysts and fans disputed the assertion. including Devin Haney, who is acknowledged by others as the rightful holder of the WBC lightweight championship.
López’s subsequent bout against Diego Magdaleno, a seasoned boxer who was ranked #10 by the WBO, #11 by the WBC, and #9 by the WBA, resulted in another brutal knockout victory for López. After his jubilant celebration with Magdaleno still on the canvas, he raised some controversy.
López’s winning streak continued, increasing to 13-0 with a knockout victory over former world title contender Edis Tatli in the fifth round on April 20, 2019, at Madison Square Garden in New York City’s undercard of Terence Crawford vs. Amir Khan.
López is rated as the third-best active lightweight in the world as of June 2022 by The Ring magazine and the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board. Fifth by ESPN and fourth by BoxRec. López was born on July 30, 1997, to immigrants from Honduras in Brooklyn, New York. After the Second World War, his Spanish paternal grandpa, who was born in 1916, immigrated to Honduras.
At the age of 5, Teofimo López Sr. and his mother moved to Brooklyn. When his son was six years old and had just relocated to Florida, López Sr. began training him.
