Tampa Bay Buccaneers Bio

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are an American football club that competes at the professional level and calls Tampa, Florida, home. The Buccaneers are a member club of the National Football Conference South division of the National Football League, which is the professional football league in the United States. The franchise became a member of the National Football League in 1976 as one of two expansion teams—the other being the Seattle Seahawks—and spent its first year competing in the American Football Conference West division. Before the start of the 1977 season, Tampa Bay moved conferences and divisions to become a member of the NFC Central division. This move was made in conjunction with Seattle. The Buccaneers, along with three other clubs that had previously played in the NFC West, were moved to the NFC South when the league underwent restructuring before to the 2002 season. Raymond James Stadium in Tampa is the location of the team’s home games, and the Glazer family is the family that owns the club.

The Buccaneers are one of just two NFL clubs, along with the Baltimore Ravens, to have gone unbeaten in all of their previous appearances in the Super Bowl. The Buccaneers have won two Super Bowls, while the Ravens have been in numerous Super Bowls. As a result of suffering 26 consecutive losses in their first two seasons and 14 consecutive losing seasons from 1983 to 1996, they were considered to be a team that was doomed to failure for most of their first two decades of existence. In spite of these early setbacks, Tampa Bay became the first post-merger expansion club to win a division title, win a playoff game, and host a conference championship before the end of their fourth season in 1979.

This was also the year that they hosted the conference championship. The team’s reputation had improved by the time they won their first title in 2002, which was also the first for a club that had been established after the merger, but they would not win another postseason game until the season in which they won their second Super Bowl triumph. The Buccaneers have the lowest winning % in the NFL at.404, which coincides with their general lack of success outside of their two victories in the Super Bowl. When they entered the league in 1976, the Buccaneers were placed in the American Football Conference West.

The next season, they were relocated to the NFC Central division, while the second expansion club from 1976, the Seattle Seahawks, went through a conference flip with Tampa Bay and joined the AFC West. This realignment was mandated by the league in 1976 as part of the expansion plan, and it was done so that both clubs could play each other twice and every other NFL franchise once during their first two seasons of play. This was done so that both teams could compete for the championship. The Buccaneers faced every club in the conference once, in addition to the Seahawks, as opposed to the typical schedule in which they would play each division opponent twice.

Even though they started their first regular season with a record of 0–26, Tampa Bay did not win their first game until the 13th week of their second season. Prior to their first regular season, the Buccaneers had defeated the Atlanta Falcons in a pre-season game in 1976 by a score of 17–3. The 1976 Buccaneers were the last club in the Super Bowl era to finish a season without a single victory until the Detroit Lions did it in 2008. Because of their recent string of defeats, they have been the punchline of many jokes on late-night television comedies. Their first victory came against the New Orleans Saints in December of 1977 when they were on the road. After the Saints’ game against the Buccaneers, head coach Hank Stram was let go from his position. The Buccaneers had to wait one more week before claiming their second victory, which came in the form of a home triumph against the St. Louis Cardinals in the last game of the 1977 season. Shortly after the game, the Cardinals also parted ways with their head coach, Don Coryell. After three straight seasons in which they finished with a losing record, the Buccaneers finally made it to the playoffs in 1979 and won their first game there, a victory against the Eagles.

During the 1979 season, a significant improvement was made to the Bucs’ predicament. The development of quarterback Doug Williams and future four-time Pro Bowl tight end Jimmie Giles, the first 1,000-yard rushing season from running back Ricky Bell, and a suffocating, league-leading defense led by future NFL Hall of Famer Lee Roy Selmon all contributed to the Buccaneers’ successful start to the season, which resulted in them being featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. The Buccaneers just needed to win one of the last four games in the season in order to secure a spot in the postseason. In the first game, which took place in Tampa, STP was smeared all over the goalposts in order to forestall the possibility of a celebration leading to the goalposts being toppled over. After a total of four blocked kicks, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were unable to capitalize on the opportunity and lost to the Minnesota Vikings 23–22.

The next week, STP was squandered again as the Bucs were shut out by the Chicago Bears 14–0; and in O. J. Simpson’s last home game in San Francisco, Tampa Bay missed its third consecutive opportunity to clinch a division championship against a 49ers club that came in with a record of 1–13. Despite this, Tampa Bay was able to squeak out a three-point win at home against the Kansas City Chiefs in the last game of the season. This game took place under the heaviest rainstorm in Bucs history.

The Buccaneers finished with a record of 10–6 and won the Central Division by virtue of a tiebreaker victory against the Bears. This was the first winning season in the history of the organization. In the divisional round of the playoffs, the Buccaneers were victorious against the Philadelphia Eagles by a score of 24–17, which was an unexpected result. As a result of the Los Angeles Rams’ victory against the Dallas Cowboys in the other NFC playoff game, the Buccaneers were given the opportunity to host the NFC Championship Game in Tampa the following week. The Buccaneers fell to the Rams by a score of 9–0. The Buccaneers seemed to be close to completing McKay’s five-year plan by the time they were in their fourth season.

The Buccaneers were able to return to the postseason after winning their division during the 1981 season. It all came down to a nail-biting finale in Detroit, with the winner taking home the trophy for the Central Division and the loser being eliminated from postseason contention. The Detroit Lions started the season with a perfect record at Ford Field. The Buccaneers secured the victory despite falling down early thanks to a touchdown pass from quarterback Williams to wide receiver Kevin House that covered 84 yards, as well as a fumble recovery for a score by defensive tackle David Logan. In the divisional round of the playoffs, the Cowboys won their game against the Buccaneers by a score of 38–0.
