He is widely recognized as one of the most talented and uncompromising white-ball cricket players in history. As of the first of November 2022, Suryakumar Yadav is widely recognized as the finest Twenty20 International batsman in the world.

Beginning in 2010, he held the position of first-class and Twenty20 captain for the Mumbai cricket team for a short period. He bats in the middle of the order with his right hand and sometimes spins the ball with his right arm. On March 14, 2021, he debuted for India in a Twenty20 International match against England. On the 18th of July, 2021, he participated in his maiden One-Day International (ODI) match for India, a game against Sri Lanka. Because of his employment opportunities at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center, his father relocated the family from Ghazipur to Mumbai. At the time, Yadav had just turned ten years old. While having a good time in the streets of Varanasi, Surya learned how to play the sport. When he was ten years old, his father saw his passion for the game and enrolled him in a cricket camp at the BARC colony in Anushakti Nagar. After that, he became a student at Dilip Vengsarkar’s Elf Vengsarkar Academy and participated in the Mumbai youth cricket competition.

Before receiving his degree, he was a Pillai College of Arts, Commerce, and Science student. The Parsi Gymkhana Cricket Club was one of the teams Suryakumar Yadav competed with when playing club cricket in Mumbai. In addition to spending time with the Parsi Gymkhana and the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited side, he played club cricket in Mumbai for teams such as the Shivaji Park Gymkhana Club and the Dadar Union Club. While playing for the Mumbai cricket team in the Ranji Trophy in 2010–2011, he made his first-class cricket debut with a score of 73.

During the following season, 2011–12, he led his side in run scoring with 754 runs in 9 games, including a double century scored against the Odisha cricket team in the third match of the year. When Parsee Gymkhana last took first place in this tournament in 1956, they created history by being the first club ever to win back-to-back trophies in three distinct competition forms within a single season.

The best batter award went to Yadav in this match. In October 2018, he was given a spot on the India C team to compete in the Deodhar Trophy for 2018–19. He has been chosen to represent India C in the 2019–20 Deodhar Trophy, which will take place in October 2019. His services were secured by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the course of the IPL auctions in 2014.

During the 2015 Indian Premier League season, he rose to prominence after leading his team to victory against MI at Eden Gardens with a game-winning knock of 20 balls, 46 runs, and five sixes. He was given the squad’s vice-captain role and played a significant role in the game. During the 2018 Indian Premier League auctions, Mumbai Indians purchased him for 3.2 crores, equivalent to USD 400,000. After a successful run with them, the Mumbai Indians decided to keep him on their roster and paid him INR 8 Cr. to do so before the big auction for the 2022 season.
