Suresh Raina Bio

Suresh Raina was born on November 27. His mother is from Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, while his Kashmiri Pandit father is from Rainawari, Jammu, and Kashmir. Dinesh Raina, Naresh Raina, and Mukesh Raina are his older brothers, while Renu is his older sister.

He has spent a total of eight seasons with the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. Being a longtime member of the CSK, he has never missed a game for the IPL. His incredible consistency in the IPL, where he scored the most runs in the history of the sport, attests to his extraordinary talent in Twenty20 games. He is so valuable to the Indian Twenty20 team that even when he is not playing for his country in ODIs or Tests, he is often called upon to help out.

His results in Tests and One-Day Internationals have been erratic. Although he rose to prominence at a young age due to a stellar domestic career, he has been unable to achieve the same level of success on the international stage. Nonetheless, he has repeatedly shown his usefulness as a lower-middle order batsman, a superb fielder, and an occasional bowler, and he played a crucial role in India’s 2011 World Cup victory. Suresh Raina made the decision to devote his life to cricket at the age of 14, and he relocated to Lucknow to enroll in the government-run Guru Gobind Singh Sports College. In 2002, at the age of 15 and a half, he had already risen to the position of captain of the Uttar Pradesh U-16 squad, attracting the attention of national selectors.

As a member of the U-19 squad, he scored a pair of half-centuries, and he was later chosen to play for the U-17s on their tour to Sri Lanka in late 2002. At the tender age of sixteen, he made his Ranji Trophy debut against Assam in February 2003. After scoring three half-centuries in the 2004 U-19 World Cup, he was recalled to the U-19 squad that traveled to Pakistan for the 2004 Asian ODI Championship. His exceptional play earned him a Border-Gavaskar scholarship to the Australian Cricket Academy in Adelaide.

With a total of 645 runs in 15 matches, he made his List A debut in January 2005 against Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy one-day tournament.  In March, he was selected for Board President’s XI against Pakistan at Dharmasala, and in April, he played for Astley & Tyldesley Cricket Club in the Lancashire League, scoring 865 runs in 12 matches. He showed promise in First Class cricket but failed in ODIs during 2006, averaging just 27.77.

Poor performance in the ODI series against South Africa led to his dismissal from the squad at the year’s end of 2006. In the 2008 IPL, he played for Chennai Super Kings and scored 421 runs, including three fifties, for a total of $650,000. T20’s success led to his comeback to the Indian team for the 2008 Asia Cup. He played well in the tournament.

This time, he made the most of his opportunity to prove his worth to the squad, even though the team’s top order was so strong that he had to bat lower in the lineup. He earned a spot in the Indian Test team for the second Test against South Africa during their 2010 tour of India because of his outstanding play in the limited-over events. Despite not making the starting lineup, he scored a century in his first match against Sri Lanka on July 26, 2010.

After averaging 28 over the course of 16 Tests, he was cut from the Test squad after his inability to deal with short deliveries was highlighted during the 2011 series against England. His rapid runs and excellent fielding made him an indispensable member of the ODI and T20 squads, and his scores of 34 and 36 not out against Australia and Pakistan in the quarterfinal and semi-final of the World Cup 2011 were pivotal in India’s eventual victory. He was lauded for his match-winning performance in 2012 against Sri Lanka and in 2013 against England, where he scored four consecutive half-centuries.

He has performed consistently in the IPL, and as a result, he has accomplished the incredible accomplishment of scoring over 400 runs in each season till 2014. He then scored 374, 399, and 442 in the following three seasons. He has scored the most runs in IPL history, and in 2013 he made a century against Punjab. In the series against the West Indies in November of 2013, he struggled with the bat but made up for it with solid fielding and occasional wickets. Although he was selected to play for India in their tours of South Africa and New Zealand, his poor play led to him being left off the Asia Cup roster.

He returned to the team in 2014 on the back of his IPL success and captained India to a series victory against Bangladesh following M.S. Dhoni had a day off. On India’s subsequent tour to England, he hit a hundred off just 75 balls, setting the tone for a 3-1 victory. He had a good World Cup, but he was once again taken out of the ODI lineup in October 2015 following a disappointing performance against South Africa. Suresh Raina married his childhood friend Priyanka Chaudhary on April 3, 2015, after CSK’s suspension he was named captain of the Gujarat Lions squad. While he was in Australia for the Cricket World Cup, his mother arranged a marriage between him and a woman he had known since they were children.

On May 14, 2016, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, they had a daughter, Gracia Raina. On the occasion of their daughter’s first birthday, he and his wife announced the formation of the Gracia Raina Foundation to improve the lives of disadvantaged mothers and their children throughout India. Suresh Raina also provided his voice to the Bollywood song “Tu Mili Sab Mila” from the film “Meeruthiya Gangster” in September 2015. On his wife’s radio program, “The Priyanka Raina Show,” he recorded the song “Bitiya Rani” in January 2018 to show his support for women and girls.
