Bio

Stephen Glenn Martin was born on August 14, 1945 in Waco, Texas, USA to Mary Lee (née Stewart; 1913-2002) and Glenn Vernon Martin (1914-1997), who was a real estate broker and aspiring actor. Steve Martin was given the name Stephen Glenn Martin at birth. He spent his childhood in Inglewood, California, as well as Garden Grove.

At 1960, he secured a position in the Magic store of Disney’s Fantasyland, where he was given the opportunity to master juggling, magic, and the art of balloon animal creation. He attended Santa Ana College, where he studied acting and English poetry as a subject.

In addition to that, he was a member of a comedy team at Knott’s Berry Farm and participated in comedies and other shows at the Bird Cage Theatre. He began his academic career at California State University where he studied philosophy before transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles in 1967 to pursue a degree in theatre.

It was in 1967 that he made his debut as a writer on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, for which he was later awarded an Emmy. Between the years 1967 and 1973, he was also a writer for a variety of other television series, such as The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour (1969) and The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour (1971).

During the latter half of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s, he was also a guest on several talk programs and comedy shows. It wasn’t until 1972 that he made his debut on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962), where he performed stand-up comedy on a regular basis and, some years later, even filled in as a guest host.

The year 1976 saw his first appearance on Saturday Night Live as a guest presenter for the show (1975). As of the year 2016, he has served as a guest host a total of 15 times, which is one fewer than the record held by Alec Baldwin. In addition, he has made 12 additional appearances on Saturday Night Live.

In 1977, he published “Let’s Get Small,” his debut comedy album, and it went on to become a platinum seller. After that, in 1978, he released “A Wild and Crazy Guy,” which was as successful, selling over a million copies. Both albums ended up winning Grammys for “Best Comedy Recording” in their respective categories.

It was around this time that he began his career in the movies, which had always been his primary objective. During this time, he also began performing in arenas in front of tens of thousands of people. The Absent-Minded Waiter (1977), a short film that he both created and starred in, was his first significant acting job.

The Jerk (1979), a film that Martin helped co-write and that Carl Reiner directed, is mostly credited with launching his career as a star. On a budget of just $4 million, the movie grossed more than $100 million worldwide. In addition, Reiner directed the films in which he acted, Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid (1982), The Man with Two Brains (1983), and All of Me (1984), all of which featured him.

He sought to avoid being typecast as a comic, so he took on more tragic parts, including acting in the film adaptation of Dennis Potter’s 1978 television series, Pennies from Heaven (1981). Unfortunately, it was not successful from a business perspective. Additionally, he appeared in the John Landis film Three Amigos! (1986), which he had a hand in writing and acted in with Martin Short and Chevy Chase.

In the same year, he also had a role alongside Rick Moranis in the musical comedy horror film Little Shop of Horrors (1986), which was released. The next year, he featured in the film Roxanne (1987), which he had co-written, as well as in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987), directed by John Hughes and starring opposite John Candy.

Other films of his include Parenthood (1989) and My Blue Heaven (1990), in which he co-starred with Rick Moranis. L.A. Story is a film that he created and performed in back in 1991. The film is about a weatherman who travels to Los Angeles in quest of love and purpose in his life. Victoria Tennant, who was then his wife, also appeared in the film.

The film Father of the Bride (1991) was released in the same year, and its popularity led to the creation of a sequel in 1995. In the 1990s, he continued to play more dramatic roles, such as in the film Grand Canyon (1991), in which he portrayed a troubled movie producer; in the film Leap of Faith (1992), in which he portrayed a phony faith healer.

In the film A Simple Twist of Fate (1994), in which he portrayed a betrayed man adopting a child; and in the thriller The Spanish Prisoner, which was written by David Mamet (1997). Other roles include those in the comedies House Sitter (1992) and The Out-of-Towners (1999), in which he co-starred with Goldie Hawn; Nora Ephron’s Mixed Nuts (1994); and Bowfinger (1999), which he co-wrote and in which he again starred with Eddie Murphy.

Following his performance in Bowfinger, he went on to feature in Bringing Down the House (2003) and Cheaper by the Dozen (2003), both of which grossed more than $130 million. In 2005, he wrote and acted in the film Shopgirl, and he also had an appearance in the sequel to the film Cheaper by the Dozen.

After that, he played Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther (2006) and The Pink Panther 2 (2009), both of which he had a hand in writing. Both of these films were released. He is still active in the film industry, and his most recent roles were in the films The Big Year (2011), Home (2015), and Love the Coopers (2015).
