Stephen Hunter is an American novelist, essayist, and film critic who was born on March 25, 1946, in Kansas City, Missouri. Hunter was raised in Evanston, Illinois, after being born in Kansas City, Missouri. His father was Charles Francis Hunter, a speech professor at Northwestern University who was killed by two male prostitutes in 1975. His mother was the children’s book author Virginia Ricker Hunter. After earning a journalism degree from Northwestern in 1968, he was drafted into the US Army and served in Washington, D.C.’s The Old Guard, a unit with both operational and ceremonial missions, the latter of which included serving as the guard force for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He contributed to the Pentagon News, a newspaper for the military.
He began working for The Baltimore Sun in 1971, spending ten years at the newspaper’s Sunday edition copy desk. In 1982, he was appointed as its film critic, a position he held until 1997 when he transferred to The Washington Post in the same capacity. Hunter earned the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2003 after also winning the American Society of Newspaper Editors Distinguished Writing Award in the criticism category in 1998. In 2008, he consented to the Post’s buyout offer.
The Vietnam War veteran and sniper Bob “the Nailer” Swagger appears in the suspense novels Point of Impact, Black Light, and Time to Hunt, which together make up a trilogy. The 47th Samurai, Night of Thunder, I, Sniper, Dead Zero, The Third Bullet, Sniper’s Honor, and G-Man continued the tale of Bob Lee Swagger. Two spin-off series have been produced as a result of the original series: Hot Springs, Pale Horse Coming, and Havana are three partners that focus on Earl Swagger, the father of Bob Swagger, while Soft Target is about Bob’s long-lost son Ray Cruz.
Hunter is the author of three non-fiction books: Now Playing at Valencia, a compilation of essays from The Washington Post, American Gunfight, a study of the attempted assassination of Harry S. Truman on November 1, 1950, and Violent Screen: A Critic’s 13 Years on the Front Lines of Movie Mayhem, a collection of essays from his time at The Sun. Hunter has also contributed to The Post with a variety of non-film-related stories, such as “Dressed To Kill—From Kabul to Kandahar, It’s Not Who You Are That Matters, but What You Shoot,” which discusses the Afghan war.
Gun enthusiast Hunter is well renowned for including accurate descriptions of firearms in several of his fictional writings. Many people don’t realize that firing a gun is a sensory pleasure that is satisfying in and of itself, according to the man who shoots as a hobby. In response to the killing of Gabrielle Giffords and 18 other people, Hunter defended the accessibility of high-capacity magazines in an interview with NPR on February 16, 2011. He added that it was unclear whether the 33-round magazine that shooter Jared Lee Loughner used was relevant to the incident. He had previously written in an opinion post for The Washington Post that extended magazines are especially useful for women and the elderly’s self-defense, saying that they might use them successfully as an alternative to semi-automatic rifles or shotguns. He emphasizes that “In general, ladies don’t want to invest the time in learning how to use [rifles and shotguns]. Also, older people cannot use [long guns] skillfully.”
