Stephen Joseph Graham OBE is a well-known English actor who was born in August 1973. He began his career in 1990 and worked consistently, including the roles of Tommy in Snatch (2000) and Shang in Gangs of New York (2002), prior to his breakthrough performance as Andrew “Combo” Gascoigne in the film This Is England (2006). His turn as Andrew “Combo” Gascoigne was critically acclaimed.
Graham reprised his performance as Gascoigne in the television series This Is England ’86 (2010), This Is England ’88 (2011), and This Is England ’90 (2015). In addition, he portrayed Detective Superintendent Dave Kelly in the drama Little Boy Blue (2017), John Corbett in the fifth series of Line of Duty (2019), Al Capone in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire (2010–2014), Eric McNally in the BBC drama Time (2021), and Hayden Stagg in the sixth season of Peaky Blinders (2022). All of these roles were played by him.
Film roles include Anthony “Tony Pro” Provenzano in The Irishman (2019), Andy Jones in Boiling Point (2021), and Scrum in two installments of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise (2011, 2017). Graham has been honored with a plethora of awards, including an OBE, a Screen Actors Guild Award, nominations for five British Academy Television Awards and two British Academy Film Awards, and a total of five British Academy Award nominations.
One of his grandmothers was Swedish, and the other was Jamaican, and his paternal grandfather was from Jamaica. His mother worked as a social worker when he was growing up, and his stepfather was a mechanic who ended up becoming a pediatric nurse later in life. He kept up cordial contact with his biological father throughout his life.
Graham went to Overdale Primary School in Kirkby, and it was there that local actor Andrew Schofield inspired him to seek a career in acting when he was only eight years old. Andrew had seen Graham play Jim Hawkins in a school production of Treasure Island, and he was impressed by Graham’s performance. He then continued his schooling at Ruffwood Comprehensive and, at the age of 14, was invited to perform at Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre.
After that, he attended the Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance to further his education in theater and performance. Graham has frequently portrayed characters hailing from a variety of locations around the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the United States. He has portrayed characters who are Cockney, Welsh, Geordie, Scouse, and Scottish. In addition, he has played an Irish gang member in 19th-century New York City, a bank robber in 1930s Chicago, a New Jersey mobster, a Texan, the short-fused English nationalist “Combo” in This Is England,, and a Jamaican gangster in Yardie.
Graham’s performance in “The Street” earned him a nomination for an RTS Award, while his work in “This Is England” earned him a nomination for a British Independent Film Award. He had an appearance in the music videos for the songs “I Remember” by Deadmau5 and Kaskade, “Fluorescent Adolescent” and “When the Sun Goes Down” by Arctic Monkeys, “Unlovable” by Babybird (directed by Johnny Depp), and “Finger on the Trigger” by Gazelle’s single.
Graham was also featured in the music videos “Soul Vampire” by Macclesfield-based neo-psychedelic band The Virginmarys, “Turn” by Travis, and “You’re in Love with a Psycho” by Kasabian. All three of these videos were released by different artists. In 2017, he made an appearance in the music video for “I Adore You” by Goldie, in which he played the role of an inmate within an open prison system.
Graham had a starring role in the BBC Christmas spectacular Lapland in the year 2011. Dean Andrews replaced Eileen Graham in the role of Eileen Graham when the series was reworked as Being Eileen. Additionally, he was featured in a promotional film named “CODnapped” for a downloadable content pack for the video game Call of Duty: Ghosts.
In the fifth season of the BBC police procedural drama Line of Duty, which aired in 2019, Graham played the role of Detective Sergeant John Corbett. In November of the same year, Graham appeared as a guest on the program “Desert Island Discs” broadcast on BBC Radio 4. In the ITV series White House Farm, which began airing in January 2020, he played the role of Welsh investigator “Taff” Jones. In spite of the fact that he is known for his ability to imitate a variety of various dialects, his performance was criticized by a number of reviewers, and they felt that his Welsh accent was not genuine.
In the film “Boiling Point,” which was released in 2021, Graham featured alongside his wife Hannah Walters. It is an extended version of a 2019 short film with the same name that was shot all in one take inside a restaurant kitchen. It was revealed in October 2022 that the BBC will develop a sequel series, which would take place some months after the feature film, and Graham would reprise his part in the series.
Graham Walters, an actor, and producer, became his wife on June 6, 2008, six years after the two of them first met while attending the Rose Bruford College of Theatre & Performance. They had been dating since that time. They formerly called the Beckenham neighborhood of London home but have since settled in Ibstock, which is located in the county of Leicestershire. They are parents to a son as well as a girl.
Graham abstains from drinking alcohol and has been diagnosed with dyslexia which led to the revelation in 2019 that his wife reads scripts for him and assists him in determining whether or not to take apart. Depression has been a challenge for him throughout his life, and he claims that the only reason he is alive today is because “the rope snapped” when he attempted to hang himself when he was in his early 20s. He has been a fan of Liverpool Football Club for his entire childhood and has been a guest on the Sky Sports football show Soccer AM on multiple occasions. In December 2022, Graham’s mother passed away.
