Bio

Stephen Fry is an English actor, writer, poet, comedian, and radio and television host. He became a successful comic at Cambridge after overcoming a difficult upbringing and teenage years. He started his career on television with such notable actors as Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson. He had great chemistry with Laurie, and the two of them became a popular comedic duo. They performed in and composed their own comedic skits.

He has hosted several documentaries covering a broad variety of issues on television. He has presented both radio and TV quiz shows. While he is most known for his comedic appearances on television, his acting career also included dramatic parts in movies. He earned acclaim for his interpretations of literary masterpieces held in high regard by a dedicated fan base. His voice may be heard in a wide variety of commercials and audiobooks, including J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” series.

He has penned novels, essays, and three volumes of his own life story. He has been quite interactive on the microblogging service, Twitter, with his many fans. He is a vocal advocate for equal rights for the LGBTQ community and the Palestinian people. As part of his mission to educate the public, he advocates for initiatives that do just that.

Stephen John Fry was born on August 24, 1957, in Hampstead, London, England, to English scientist and inventor parents, Marianne Eve and Alan John Fry. Stephen has an older brother called Roger and a younger sister named Jo. The siblings grew up together in Norfolk. He went to “Cawston Primary School,” “Stouts Hill Preparatory School,” and “Uppingham School.” The ‘Uppingham School kicked him out when he was 15 years old. He was also kicked out of the fictional ‘Paston School at a later date.

For taking a credit card from a family acquaintance when he was just 17, he spent three months in prison. While incarcerated in “Pucklechurch Prison,” his mother sent him newspaper crossword puzzles. After serving his time, he returned to his studies at Norwich’s “City College” and eventually won a scholarship at Cambridge’s “Queens’ College.” He majored in English literature and received a degree with an honorable mention.

While he had attempted to hide his sexuality at first, Stephen Fry has now become a vocal advocate for homosexual rights. He has received awards for his contributions to humanism and homosexual rights. He wed his longtime boyfriend, the comedian Elliot G. Spencer, in 2015. He had been seeing Daniel Cohen for quite some time. His first autobiography, titled “Moab Is My Washpot,” was published in 1997 and covers the first two decades of his life. His autobiography, “The Fry Chronicles: An Autobiography,” was followed up with a second book in 2010. More Fool Me (memoir), which follows the second book, came out in 2014.

In 2018, Fry was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had surgery to remove the tumor. He elaborated later on how the aggressiveness of the disease was what made early detection so crucial in saving his life. Fry became involved with the “Cambridge Footlights,” where he met future comedy partner Hugh Laurie. The revue ‘The Cellar Tapes,’ co-written by Laurie, Emma Thompson, and Tony Slattery, marked his television debut in 1982.

Acting as “General Melchett” in “Blackadder II” and “Blackadder Goes Forth,” he was a major celebrity in the second part of the 1980s. He portrayed both “Lord Melchett” and “Lord Frondo” in “Blackadder’s Christmas Carol.” Jeeves and Wooster, based on the novels by the same name, ran on television from 1990 to 1993, with him in the lead role throughout its run. Hugh Laurie was Bertie Wooster and Stephen Fry was “Jeeves.”

Absolute Power, a comedy series shown on BBC 2 in 2003, featured him and John Bird in lead roles. The drama unfolds in the fictitious London PR firm “Prentiss McCabe,” where the episodes are filmed. In 2003, he took over as presenter of the comic panel game program “QI (Quite Interesting)” on British television. John Lloyd created and co-produced the show, which has Alan Davies (a comedian) as a regular panelist.

He provided the voiceover for the BBC documentary “The Story of Light Entertainment” in July of 2006. The documentary is broken up into eight parts, each of which focuses on a certain subject. The six-part BBC program “Stephen Fry in America” from 2008 found him mostly exploring the United States by taxi. Channel 4 aired “Stephen Fry’s 100 Best Gadgets” in 2011. A cigarette lighter, which he referred to as “fire with a flick,” was voted the best device.

His documentary series “Fry’s Planet Word” is all about the world’s languages, and he hosted and wrote all of the episodes. The five episodes, each an hour long, aired on two BBC channels in September and October 2011. Paul Bunyan, an operetta written by Benjamin Britten and performed by the Welsh National Youth Opera at the Wales Millennium Centre in August 2013, included his vocal work. The same year, he aired the first of a two-part documentary called “Stephen Fry: Out There,” which followed a gay man across the globe and examined his lifestyle. In addition, he appeared on Channel 4’s “Bear’s Wild Weekends” as a special guest.

‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ (2013) and ‘The Battle of the Five Armies’ (2015) both cast him in the role of ‘Master of Lake-town. He also had a brief role in the biopic “The Man Who Knew Eternity,” released in 2015. He appeared in an episode of “Yonderland” in 2016. After that, he secured the starring role of Roland on the short-lived series The Great Indoors. He has also guest-starred in episodes including “Neo Yokio,” “Doctor Who,” and “Sex Education.”

It was a theatrical adaptation of his work, “Shaw Festival in Mythos: A Trilogy,” which he performed in 2018. It was not until the following year, at the “Edinburgh International Festival,” that it made its debut across the pond in Europe. Fry’s voice may be heard in a wide variety of films, such as “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” “Duck, Duck, Goose,” and “Missing Link.” He participated in a British telethon called “The Big Night In” in 2020. BBC One aired the telethon to help individuals who have been afflicted by the COVID-19 outbreak. A total of almost $27.3M (£25.3M) was collected at the conclusion of the program.
