Emilie Welti was born on born March 31, 1983. As Emilie Welti, she made her debut on the music scene with the release of Fisher’s self-titled first album in 2005. Both “Sketches on Sea” and “The Danger of Light” are her solo efforts.
Her second album, “Monday’s Ghost”, was published independently and went on to become a Swiss chart-topper and critical darling. She’s been called “Laura Marling, Beth Orton, and Björk in one folk-rocking package” by The Guardian.
The Swiss performer and vocalist lived in both England and Germany throughout her formative years. Her songs, written in several languages, reflect her global upbringing. Each album features at least one song sung in a Swiss German dialect, even though the majority of the songs are sung in English or German. Her French cover of Le Vent Nous Portera by Noir Désir can be found on her third studio album 1983.
Hunger has always been a team player, and the diverse range of musical styles she enjoys has exposed her to interesting people from all over the world. Her first solo album, “Sketches On Sea,” was recorded in just a few days at home, while her most recent, “The Danger Of Light,” took shape over the course of three sessions in different countries. Howard Bilerman, singer/songwriter Mark Bérubé, Brad Barr, and David Payant jammed with her in Montréal; in Los Angeles, Josh Klinghoffer, Nathaniel Walcott, and Steven Nistor joined in. The last recording session at Montreal’s Hotel2Tango-Studio can be heard on the album’s deluxe edition.
Hunger is quickly becoming known as an energizing live performer, and recent performances include Olympia in Paris, Miles Davis Hall at the Montreux Jazz Festival, and the John Peel Stage at Glastonbury Festival, among others, alongside some of Switzerland’s most successful artists like Erik Truffaz, The Young Gods, Kutti MC, and Stephan Eicher.
Sophie Hunger’s music can go in any number of directions, from soul balladry to traditional folk songs drenched in jazzy atmospheres. Her ability to sing in a variety of styles and her incredibly delicate yet mature voice has helped her cultivate a rich musical universe. She worked with a plethora of musicians, from a trombonist to a flamenco guitarist, for Sketches for Sea. Sophie’s technical savvy opens doors and lets her do feats that would be impossible for most people. Sophie Hunger, a singer/songwriter from Zurich, Switzerland, is armed with an acoustic guitar and an indie folk sensibility.
Her self-released debut studio album, Monday’s Ghost, was a critical and commercial success in Switzerland. Emilie Jeanne-Sophie Welti Hunger was born on March 31, 1983, in Berne, Switzerland. She grew up in both England and Germany. She first appeared on records under the name Emilie Welti, while performing with the band Fisher. Fisher was the only album released by the band before she went solo as a singer/songwriter under the name Sophie Hunger. Sketches on Sea, her first proper solo album, was released in 2006 and quickly became an underground hit.
Of course, it helped that Hunger was also a captivating performer in person. Her live performances have earned her widespread acclaim, landing her a spot at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in 2008. Monday’s Ghost, Hunger’s first studio album, was released in October 2008 on the independent label Two Gentlemen to widespread critical acclaim and commercial success in Switzerland. In 2009, Universal Music licensed the album for international release, and Hunger toured Europe in support of the reissue. The CD features both English and German vocals.
Hunger studied the piano for a while as a kid. Since her father was a jazz fan, she was exposed to the genre at an early age. She was a free spirit with eclectic musical tastes; as a teen, she was into hip-hop and R&B. She listened to rock later, then as an adult she found country, bluegrass, and folk music.
At Glastonbury Festival’s John Peel Stage in June of 2010, Sophie Hunger and her band performed. Until Sophie Hunger, no Swiss performer had ever appeared there. She first performed at London’s 100 Club in July 2010, and then at London’s The Roundhouse in October of the same year.
Sophie Hunger’s debut album, titled Sophie Hunger: s/t, was set for an April 2011 release on Manimal Vinyl, it was revealed in late 2010. There were songs from 1983 and Monday’s Ghost on the CD. Since around 2007, Hunger has also included Christian Prader as a member of the band. Marc Erbetta on drums and Simon Gerber on bass round out her band. Some of the band’s former drummers are Dominik Chanson, Julian Sartorius, and Alberto Malo. Balz Bachmann is one of the former bassists.
Hunger sings in British English, French, Swiss German, and German, and she plays guitar, blues harp, and piano. Sketches on Sea, her 2006 solo debut album, was recorded in a matter of days at home and contained three tracks with trombonist Michael Flury. The album was self-released in 2006 and re-released by Gentlemen Records the following year.
Hunger contributed vocals to the Superterz project between 2002 and 2006, and her work can be heard on the group’s 2006 album, Standards. Hunger fronted the indie rock band Fisher beginning in 2004. This band broke up in 2007.
