American actress Sofia Black-D’Elia was born on December 24, 1991. She gained notoriety for her appearances on television in roles including Tea Marvelli in Skins, Sage Spence in Gossip Girl, Andrea Cornish in The Night Of, and Frannie Latimer in Your Honor. Black-D’Elia played Sabrina in the Fox sitcom The Mick from 2017 to 2018. She has had roles in the films Project Almanac and Viral. Black-D’Elia now portrays the title character in the January 20, 2022-premiere comedy series Single Drunk Female on Freeform. Black-D’Elia was reared in Clifton, New Jersey, where she also attended Clifton High School before graduating. Elinor, her mother, is a printer.
Anthony V. D’Elia, her father, is a New Jersey Superior Court judge. Her mother is Jewish, while her father is of Italian ancestry. Black-D’Elia celebrated her bat mitzvah. She enrolled in dance lessons at Broadway Bound when she was five years old and began performing at age five. At the age of seventeen, Bailey, a recurrent character on the soap opera All My Children, was given Black-first D’Elia’s substantial acting job. She was cast as the openly lesbian adolescent character Tea in the MTV teen drama Skins in 2010. Black-D’Elia portrayed Sage Spence in the sixth and final season of Gossip Girl, which debuted in the autumn of 2012.
She also played Jessie in Project Almanac, a time-traveling thriller directed by Michael Bay and released in January 2015. She had an appearance in the HBO miniseries The Night Of in 2016. She played Emma in the horror movie Viral the same year. Hearing fans yell out character names as they walk by in public places is a common work hazard for actors. And even though Sofia Black-D’Elia, 30, has been acting consistently since she was 18, the New Jersey native is now being addressed more than just as “Samantha!” thanks to a breakthrough performance as the title character on Freeform’s critically acclaimed Single Drunk Female.
Black-D’Elia, who recently wed director Henry Joost, is quick to praise Single Drunk Female creator Simone Finch, a creative team that also includes Jenni Konner from Girls, Leslye Headland from Russian Doll, and Daisy Gardner from The Goldbergs, as well as frequent scene partner Ally Sheedy for creating the ultimate playground. Even though I had already begun to fall in love with it at that time, I didn’t yet view it as an option for myself. I had never met a professional actor outside of the All My Children cast, so I wasn’t yet aware that it might be a serious career.
It hadn’t yet dawned on me that I could accomplish this since all of my friends were leaving for college at the time. If I’m being really honest, I didn’t really start to consider the possibility that I would not need to return to college for anything other than acting until very recently. The reality is that I made an effort not to give it too much thought. Although it sounds corny, I began to fall in love with the acting trade and was eager to continue gaining experience.
I wanted to work on extremely varied projects, in terms of genre, and collaborate with very different sorts of creatives since I felt very inexperienced for a long time and wanted to get as much experience as I could. I was expecting that it would eventually allow me to direct myself more in the direction of the craft that I had grown to love and work on very difficult tasks. I now believe that what I was doing was really experimental. There was some good, some terrible, and some in-between things, but I learned from everything and I’m really appreciative of those experiences.
Black-D’Elia has also been the target of flattering remarks from critics. Doreen St. Felix of The New Yorker hailed the actress “wonderful,” while Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter praised her ability to switch between “full-body intoxication” and “equally striking” as sober Sam with “quick comedic timing.” The second season of the show will follow Samantha after she loses her trendy media career in Manhattan and is forced to move in with her mother in a rural Massachusetts town after treatment.
Black-D’Elia was interviewed by THR to discuss how the role has affected her life, the leadership lessons she took away from The Mick co-star Kaitlin Olson, and why seeing Evan Peters act drunk in Mare of Easttown made her want to give up.
The best part of my employment has been all the folks who yell at me on the street about how much time they have who are either in recovery or know someone who is. The judge’s daughter, who previously garnered attention on programs including Skins, Gossip Girl, The Night Of, The Mick, and Your Honor, added, “I’ve never had a job that’s offered me anything more satisfying than that.” I’ve played a lot of characters who are maybe one-dimensional or two-dimensional, such as love interests or tiny manic pixie dream girls, and I really respect Samantha for being a completely formed character. I also really enjoy this character.
From 2017 through 2018, Black-D’Elia portrayed Sabrina Pemberton in the Fox comedic television program TheShe played Frannie in the Showtime legal drama television series Your Honor in 2019, which debuted in the latter half of 2020. She presently plays the title character in the January 2022-premiere comedy series Single Drunk Female on Freeform. A second season of the show was ordered in April 2022.
