Slipknot is a heavy metal band from Des Moines, Iowa, in the United States. In September of 1995, drummer Shawn Crahan and bassist Paul Gray were the driving forces behind the formation of this band. Corey Taylor, Mick Thomson, Jim Root, Paul Gray, Craig Jones, Sid Wilson, Shawn Crahan, Chris Fehn, and Joey Jordison have been the band’s constant lineup for more than a decade now, after a series of lineup shifts in the band’s formative years that included numerous different members.
However, the band was now down to seven members with the passing of Gray on May 24, 2010, and the departure of Jordison on December 12, 2012. In 2019, Corey Taylor and Shawn Crahan filed a lawsuit against Chris Fehn for unpaid royalties. Slipknot, the band’s self-titled debut album, was released in 1999, and the band’s fame continued to grow with the publication of Iowa, the band’s second album, in 2001. Both of these albums contributed to the band’s precipitous ascent to stardom. After a short break, Slipknot returned in 2004 with Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses). They then went on another break and returned in 2008 with their fourth album, All Hope Is Gone, which had a strong start on the Billboard 200 chart.
2014 saw the release of Slipknot’s fifth studio album, titled.5: The Gray Chapter, after a lengthier break between albums. Following yet another break, the band returned in 2019 with the album. We Are Not Your Kind. The band then issued their seventh studio album, The End, So Far, in 2022. In addition, the band has produced a compilation album titled Antennas to Hell, a live album titled 9.0: Live, four live DVDs, and two live albums: 9.0: Live and Day of the Gusano: Live In Mexico.
Anders “Colefni” Kolefni and Shawn “Corey” Fowler formed Slipknot in September of 1995. (Crahan). Anders and Shawn spent almost all of their time together hanging around and playing the role-playing game Werewolf: The Apocalypse (where much of the lyrics came from for MFKR). During one winter, when Anders was assisting Shawn with some welding in his garage, the two began discussing the formation of a whole new band. Both were drummers at the time (Anders had been singing for some time), and they wanted to form a band that included other members who played stand-up percussion.
Anders called Paul Grey, who was living in Los Angeles then and convinced him to go back to Des Moines to give it a shot. They had tried to do so in the past, as early as 1991, and had written songs, including “Slipknot” and “Gently,” but Shawn became too busy, and the band eventually disbanded. In addition to the band’s three founding members, Andy, Shawn, and Paul recruited former Body Pit guitarist Donnie Steele and guitarist Quan Nong as additional guitarists (ex-heads on the Wall). The band members went into Anders’s basement to discuss their musical direction and work out how to enhance their sound.
After participating in the first six sessions of the band under the moniker Meld, Quan Nong decided to leave because he wanted to explore a more alternative and punk-influenced musical direction. Even though Paul had been unsuccessful in gaining Joey’s attention in previous projects like Body Pit, he was adamant about getting him engaged in the current project he was working on because he felt something was lacking. Paul saw Joey working nights at Sinclair’s, and it was there that he persuaded Joey to accompany him to Anders’ basement for a rehearsal of the band’s performance.
Joey gave in and ultimately made it down to the basement to observe a practice session, even though he had missed two rehearsals owing to the demands of his job. This basement was “essentially, open spaced,” and the space was very congested and narrow. To soundproof it, the members had used carpet samples and scraps from a neighboring pet grooming center. As a result, the whole basement smelled like cat pee.
Joey initially heard them perform a song referred to as “Slipknot,” which was followed by performances of the songs “Gently” and “Fur.” Soon after, Joey came to the conclusion that he needed to be a part of this band and promptly started playing the drums, so forcing Shawn to switch to playing percussion instruments. A band was being put together. Within the claustrophobic basement, new songs were being produced almost minute-to-minutely. Some of the names that were being churned out were “Killers Are Quiet,” “Do Nothing Bitchslap,” “Confessions,” “Some Feel,” “Part of Me,” and Tattered and Torn.
In addition, Paul, Shawn, and Joey started getting together at Sinclair’s to discuss their future goals and strategies. Shawn and Joey concluded that for the band to provide a hard-core auditory onslaught, they would need three drummers. Shawn wanted a wall of power created by having a drummer to the left and right of the stage, with another drummer in the rear commanding everything… Because Joey performs the main set, he is the primary drummer for the band and is responsible for keeping everything together.
