On January 15, 1988, in Northeast Los Angeles, Sonny John Moore, better known as Skrillex, was born. Skrillex’s family moved to the Forest Hill neighborhood of San Francisco when he was just 2 years old. He attended a public elementary school before transferring to a local residential school in the Mojave Desert outside of Las Vegas. At the age of 12, Skrillex moved back to Northeast Los Angeles with his family. His parents, both of whom were Scientologists, enrolled him in a private academy that taught in accordance with the beliefs of L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of the Scientology religion. Because of the bullying he experienced at school, he left at the age of 14 to be educated at home.
When he auditioned for the rock band “From First to Last,” he expected to play guitar but ended up being the main singer. Skrillex left the band to pursue a solo career after making substantial contributions to the release of albums like “Heroine” and “Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count” during his time with the group. A solo artist, Skrillex has collaborated on national tours with groups like All Time Low, Forever the Sickest Kids, The Matches, and more.
His first commercial release was the EP Gypsyhook EP, and after its success, Sonny started work on his debut studio album Bells before abandoning it. Under the name “Skrillex,” he picked up where he left off in the music industry. Using his pseudonym, he released an EP called “My Name is Skrillex,” which could be downloaded for free from his official MySpace page. So far, Skrillex has won eight Grammys.
After making contact with Matt Good, lead singer of the Georgia-based rock band “From First to Last,” Skrillex traveled there in 2004. Once producers Andy Butler, Eric Dale, and Derrick Thomas heard Skrillex out, they decided to make him the lead singer instead of the guitarist he had originally requested for the debut studio album.
In June of 2004, Epitaph Records released “Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count,” the debut LP by the band “First to Last,” which featured Skrillex. After the album dropped, they went on a string of successful concert tours, the most well-known of which were the “Dead by Dawn” and “Vans Warped” tours. The band’s second album, named “Heroine,” was released in March 2006 through Epitaph Records. Fans of the band’s music devoured the CD, inspiring them to go on another nationwide tour. Unfortunately, Skrillex’s vocal issues forced the band to cancel a number of scheduled performances.
After having surgery, Skrillex said he was leaving the group to pursue a solo career. The group’s final performance was at their hometown’s ‘House of Blues restaurant/cum-bar in Orlando, Florida. Skrillex made a MySpace page for himself after he quit the band and posted audio samples of the tracks “Glow Worm,” “Equinox,” and “Signal” to it. On April 7, 2007, he performed for the first time without renowned harpist Carl Robbins. He kept uploading MySpace previews of new songs, and eventually, he established a band and went on tour with the musical group “Team Sleep.”
Known bands like “Forever the Sickest Kid,” “The Matches,” and “The Rocket Summer” joined Skrillex on the 2008 edition of “The Alternative Press Magazine’s” annual AP Tour in February. Every band who participated in the AP tour was featured on the cover of the Alternative Press Magazine’s annual ‘100 Bands You Need to Know magazine.
At his live shows, he sold CDs and DVDs of the EP. He toured with the bands “Paper Route” and “Innerpartysystem” and served as Chiodos’ opening act on their European tour. When Skrillex toured with the band Hollywood Undead in 2009, the two groups used the moniker “Sonny and the Blood Monkeys” as their stage name.
On June 7, 2010, he released his first EP, titled “My Name is Skrillex,” for free digital download. In 2011, he began the ‘Project Blue Book Tour’ to promote the song ‘Bring Out the Devil.’ Throughout the tour, he debuted several new songs, including ‘Cinema,’ ‘Reptile,’ and ‘First of the Year. Skrillex released his third extended play, titled “More Monsters and Sprites,” in June 2011. The EP featured two different takes of the original song “Ruffneck” as well as three tracks with original soundtracks.
Skrillex released a music video for his song “First of the Year” on Spin.com on August 17, 2011, shortly after announcing the formation of his own record label dubbed “OWSLA.” The following year, Skrillex contributed vocals to the song “Lick It,” which appeared on Kaskade’s album Fire & Ice. Skrillex announced a new album titled “Voltage” on November 8, 2011, but the record was never released. However, on December 23, 2011, he dropped an EP titled “Bangarang.”
On January 2, 2013, he dropped his seventh extended play, titled “Leave,” on the Nest IV subscription program of OWSLA. In 2017, he announced on social media that he was reforming the band ‘From First to Last.’ In 2007, Skrillex released demos of his first three solo singles—”Glow Worm,” “Equinox,” and “Signal”—on his MySpace blog.
