Joseph Junior Adenuga was born on September 19th, 1982 in Tottenham, North London, UK. His Nigerian parents, Ivy and Joseph Adenuga, moved their family to England in search of a better life. His mom authored a book detailing her experience fleeing the Nigerian civil war. He is the oldest of four brothers and sisters and grew up in Tottenham’s Meridian Walk Estate. Jamie Adenuga, better known by his stage name Jme, is his musical brother. At Winchmore Council School, Skepta received his education. Rapper, record producer and songwriter Skepta is a household name in the United Kingdom for his boastful, anti-establishment anthems.
This record producer and music video director from Tottenham has steadily climbed the ranks of the music industry with his four studio albums and five mixtapes. He made Debrett’s 2017 list of the 100 most influential persons in the UK thanks to his impact as a pioneering grime artist on British mainstream culture. After beating out more than 300 other competitors in an MC competition, he became an instant star in the grime genre.
His song “Private Caller” became a smash hit, making him famous all throughout the London area. Even though he has always worked as a solo performer, he has managed to gain global recognition and become an overnight sensation among today’s youth. All across the world, he performs at festivals and events before massive crowds. Despite his fame, he seems like a regular guy who doesn’t mind hanging out with fans and doesn’t have bodyguards because he doesn’t like the concept of having people pushed away from him. He is a firm believer in the power of unity and the importance of discovering one’s own life’s mission.
Skepta got his start as a rapper and emcee at rap shows and on pirate radios after being influenced by US and UK hip-hop. He was a DJ for the Tottenham-based grime crew Meridian Crew. Other instrumentals, such as “DTI,” and “Private Caller,” were published under his name around this time. Skepta, his brother Jme, and another rapper named Joseph Bamber all joined the grime crew Roll Deep after the dissolution of Meridian Crew in 2005.
English grime collective and musical label founded in 2006 by Skepta and Jme. It started off as a small record label in the city’s North London. This record label was also used by members of the collective to release albums of original music. Skepta competed against fellow MC Devilman for the DVD “King of the Mics 2” shortly after the foundation of “Boy Better Know.” It was one of the biggest fights in grime history, and it’s still spoken about today. Following the victorious bout, he dropped a tape titled “Joseph Junior Adenuga.”
On September 17, 2007, he released his first album, Best Hits, via Boy Better Know. He published “Rolex Sweep” as a digital download on his own on September 15, 2008. His second studio album, titled Microphone Champion, featured the song as the album’s lead single. The single “Rolex Sweep” reached position No. 86 on the UK Singles Chart. On June 1, 2009, he dropped Microphone Champion, his second studio album. The album’s lead song, titled “Rolex Sweep,” was released on September 15, 2008. On the UK Singles Chart, it reached position #86.
Released on May 18, 2009, ‘Too Many Men’ was the album’s second single and peaked at No. 79 on the UK Singles Chart. On October 12, 2009, the album’s third single, “Lush,” was released. On January 31, 2011, Boy Better Know released his third studio album, titled Doin’ It Again. Five singles were released in advance of the album, four of which charted in the UK Top 40.
On March 15, 2010, the lead single, titled “Bad Boy,” was made available for digital download. The second single, “Save Me,” became available for digital download on June 27, 2010. On October 17, 2010, the digital download release of the third single, titled “Cross My Heart,” was made available. On February 6, 2011, the fourth track, titled “So Alive,” was released as a digital single. The fifth single, titled “Amnesia,” came out on February 27, 2011. On the UK Singles Chart, it peaked at position #164. The most popular song, “Save Me,” reached the fourteenth spot on the charts.
Two songs, “Hang On” and “Make Peace Not War,” off his planned fourth album were released as singles in 2012. The discovered singles all landed in the Top 40 of the UK singles chart. After receiving mixed reviews for his first two singles, on December 2, 2012, he dropped a mixtape titled “Blacklisted.” His brother Jme appears on the track “That’s Not Me,” which he released as a single on June 8, 2014. The single got as high as No. 21 in the UK. His fourth studio album, titled “Konnichiwa,” featured the song as the album’s lead single. In the same month, he contributed a rap to Meridian Dan’s “German Whip” remix.
His next song, “It Ain’t Safe,” came out in 2014, and his next album, “Shutdown,” came out in 2015. Skepta played all of the album’s tracks live during the album’s premiere party in Tokyo. Three of the album’s singles, “That’s Not Me,” “Shutdown,” and “Man,” all charted in the Top 40.
Critics were overwhelmingly positive about the album. Many worldwide best-of-albums 2016 compilations featured it as well. Both “The Guardian” and “Apple Music” hailed it as 2016’s top album. He kicked off his ‘Banned From America’ tour in April 2017. In total, there were 14 performances around the United States and Europe. The name of the tour reflected the fact that his initial plans to perform in the United States had to be scrapped when he was denied a visa.
