Simon Armitage was born in Marsden in 1963 and now resides in West Yorkshire. He received his degree in Geography from Portsmouth University, where he graduated. His master’s thesis at Manchester University, where he was a post-graduate student, focused on the impact that violent television programming had on young criminals. In 1994, he was employed in Greater Manchester as a Probation Officer.

In addition to authoring his unique poems, Armitage released a version of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight that received widespread recognition in 2007.
The Death of King Arthur (2011), his translation of an anonymous poem from the 15th century, was also highly received, and in 2016 his translation of the medieval English poem Pearl won the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation. Both of these works are excellent examples of poetry translation. Little Green Man was published in 2001, and The White Stuff was published in 2004.
He wrote both books. All Points North (1998), Gig: The Life and Times of a Rock-star Fantasist (2009), and Walking Home (2012) were some of the volumes of Armitage’s memoirs that were published. In addition, he authored several plays, as well as the libretto for an opera and the screenplay for a puppet opera.
