Sherry Jackson Bio

Sherry D. Jackson is a well-known retired American actress who began her career while she was a child. Jackson was born on February 15, 1942. Beginning when Sherry, Curtis L. Jackson, Jr., and Gary L. Jackson were still young, their mother gave them all instruction in various performing arts, including singing and dancing. Following the passing of her spouse in 1948, Maurita relocated her family from Wendell, North Carolina to Los Angeles, California.

According to one version of events, Maurita, who had been advised while still in Idaho that her children should be in films, was recommended to a theatrical agency by a tour bus driver whom they met in Los Angeles. Maurita’s children had already been taught that they should be in films.  Sherry had her first screen test within the year, and it was for The Snake Pit starring Olivia de Havilland. By the time she was seven years old, she had already been in her first feature picture, the 1949 musical You’re My Everything, which starred Anne Baxter and Dan Dailey. The story may be apocryphal, but Sherry had her first screen test within the year.

During the filming of “The Lion and the Horse” in 1950, young Sherry became acquainted with the actor Steve Cochran, who was also a cast member of the film. Sherry’s mother was a widow when Steve’s friend Montgomery Pittman, a writer, was introduced to her by Steve. A romantic relationship evolved, and on June 4, 1952, in Torrance, California, Pittman married Maurita Jackson in a modest ceremony.

Sherry served as the flower girl, while Pittman’s younger brother Gary was the ring bearer. Cochran was Pittman’s best man during the wedding. In 1955, Cochran engaged Pittman to script Come Next Spring, which was the first picture that Cochran produced under his own name. Cochran made the hire. Sherry portrayed the character of Annie Ballot, Cochran’s silent daughter, which was a part that Pittman had written especially for his step-daughter.

Jackson, who played Susie Kettle, one of the titular couple’s many children, in several of the Ma and Pa Kettle movies that were released in the 1950s, also had a role in the film The Breaking Point, which starred John Garfield in his penultimate film appearance. Garfield’s performance was Jackson’s last in the film industry. In the year 1952, she played the role of Jacinta Marto, an emotionally turbulent visionary and ascetic, in the film The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima.

The following year, she played John Wayne’s daughter in the film Trouble Along the Way, which was centered around football. It is possible that Jackson will be best remembered for her role as older daughter Terry Williams on The Danny Thomas Show (also known as Make Room for Daddy during the show’s first three seasons), which she played for a total of five seasons between the years 1953 and 1958. She worked on the show for a total of five years, during which time she developed a close relationship with Jean Hagen, who played her on-screen mother. However, Hagen departed the show after the third season in 1956, when it was already three years old.

Jackson, who had been working on the show for five years, decided to leave it at the beginning of the sixth season when her contract to remain on the show for that amount of time came to an end. Penny Parker, the actress who played the role, appeared in all fourteen episodes of the seventh season so that the writers could conclude the story of the character. During those episodes, the protagonist gets married and leaves town.

Because of the significant impact that Jackson had on the viewers of the Danny Thomas show, she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for “Television” on February 8, 1960. The star is located at 6324 Hollywood Boulevard. It is true that Jackson reprised his role as Terry in the pilot episode of the new series Make Room for Granddaddy in the year 1970. Over the course of the following few years, Jackson broadened her range of acting roles by appearing as a guest star on dozens of different television series.

She played roles such as a hit woman on 77 Sunset Strip, a freed Apache captive who yearns to return to the reservation on The Tall Man, an alcoholic on Mr. Novak, a woman accused of murder on Perry Mason, and an unstable mother-to-be on Wagon Train. In the first season of The Rifleman, episode “The Sister” had Sherry as a guest star playing the part of a horse-riding sister who was adored by two brothers.

She appeared as a promiscuous young spouse of a gunslinger in the episode of the Western series Maverick titled “Red Dog” alongside Roger Moore, Lee Van Cleef, and John Carradine. After making an appearance in 1965 on Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., she later appeared in episodes of My Three Sons, Gunsmoke, Rawhide, The Wild Wild West (“The Night of the Vicious Valentine” and “The Night of the Gruesome Games,” playing two distinct characters each time), Batman, and the original Star Trek (“What Are Little Girls Made Of?”).

Jackson was filmed in a naked scene for the feature film adaptation of the television series Peter Gunn that Blake Edwards directed and named Gunn (1967). However, this sequence was only included in the international version of the film and not in the one that was released in the United States. In the issue of Playboy magazine that was published in August 1967, a photographic article titled “Make Room For Sherry” featured several stills from the naked scene. There has not been a VHS or DVD release of the movie as of yet.

In 1968, Jackson played a member of an all-female motorcycle gang in the film The Mini-Skirt Mob. She also made an appearance in the film Cotter in 1973, starring alongside Don Murray and Carol Lynley. In the years that followed, she made appearances in television movies such as Wild Women in 1970, Hitchhike! in 1974, The Girl on the Late, Late Show in 1974, Returning Home in 1975, Enigma in 1977, The Curse of the Moon Child in 1977, and Casino in 1980.

Throughout the 1970s and into the early 1980s, she appeared as a guest on a number of popular television programs, including Love, American Style, The Rockford Files, Starsky & Hutch, The Blue Knight, Switch, The Streets of San Francisco, Barnaby Jones, The Incredible Hulk, Fantasy Island, Vega$, Alice, Charlie’s Angels, and CHiPs. She also appeared in the movies The Blue Knight and The Blue Knight II.
