She made her television debut in the short-lived sitcom “Cleghorne!” but had to return to her legal job temporarily while pursuing her showbiz career. She later landed recurring roles in popular comedies like “Suddenly Susan” and “Everybody Loves Raymond” before finally landing her breakthrough role as Ramona Platt in the sitcom “Less than Perfect.”
Sherri’s popularity skyrocketed after co-hosting the daytime talk show “The View,” earning her numerous Daytime Emmy Award nominations and a win. Sherri was born on April 22, 1967, in Chicago, Illinois, to LaVerne and Lawrence A. Shepherd. Her mother was a house cleaner, and her father managed the culinary service at Sambos Restaurant while also serving as a deacon in the church. When she was eleven, Sherri and her family moved to Hoffman Estates, where she grew up with her two younger sisters.
In 1990, Sherri began her stand-up comedy career while working as a legal assistant in Beverly Hills. She left her job to pursue her dream and landed her first role as Victoria Carlson in the main cast of “Cleghorne!” However, after the show was canceled, Sherri struggled financially and lost her home and car. She spent a year in a shelter and eventually returned to her legal job for the next three years.
She acquired the lead role of Ramona Platt in the ABC sitcom series “Less Than Perfect,” which aired for four seasons from October 1, 2002, to June 27, 2006, and earned Sherri a BET Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. This was her big break. She participated in the fourteenth season of “Dancing with the Stars,” which debuted on March 19, 2012. On April 10, 2012, she and Valentin Chmerkovskiy, a professional dance partner, were eliminated after placing third.2014 saw Sherri Shepherd perform as Madame, the Evil Stepmother, in the Broadway production of Cinderella by Rodgers and Hammerstein.
She portrayed Anne Flatch in one of the series’ major roles in the sitcom “Trial & Error”. She presented 65 episodes of Game Show Network’s Best Ever Trivia Show beginning on June 10th, 2019. She will be seen playing the recurring part of Sharon in the upcoming television multi-camera sitcom “Call Your Mother” in addition to her role as Paula Madison in the comedic streaming television series “Mr. Iglesias,” which debuted on Netflix on June 21, 2019. On January 13, 2021, ABC is scheduled to air the latter.
Sherri Shepherd maintains her stand-up origins by performing frequently at the Comedy Store, the Improv, and the Laugh Factory while advancing her acting career on television. In the animated television series “Kim Possible” and “Brandy & Mr. Whiskers” (2004–2006), Sherri Shepherd provided voice word. Beginning with “Up All Night,” the episode that aired on February 8, 2007, and continuing through 2013, Sherri played the recurring character of Angie in the sitcom satire “30 Rock.”
Her role as co-host of the daytime talk show “The View” is among her most memorable television appearances. On September 10, 2007, she made her debut as a permanent co-host after becoming the show’s frequent guest co-host since 2006. She made her final appearances on August 11 of that year after announcing her resignation from the program in June of that same year. Later, in 2015 and 2016, she made numerous appearances on the program as a guest host and primary contributor. She was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 for her work as the host of the talk program, and she took home the prize in 2009.
The first comedy series ever to be owned by the channel, “Sherri,” starring Sherri Shepherd, was based on her life and aired on Lifetime from October 5 through December 1, 2009.
