Chinese artist Shen Teng was born in the city of Qiqihar, Heilongjiang Province, in 1979. He enrolled in the Art Academy of the People’s Liberation Army in 1999 and earned his BA there in 2003. One of my professional goals as a biologist studying stem cells is to learn how stem cells differentiate into more and more specialized cell types, and then use that knowledge to manufacture pure populations of the cell kinds that are wanted, starting from stem cells. Pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) have been the primary focus of my studies over the past decade.
These cells can potentially develop into any of the several hundred cell types seen in the human body. However, it has been found to be a very challenging process to drive PSCs to differentiate into a pure population of a certain cell type. All too often, conventional differentiation methods yield highly variable cell populations that are useless for further study or in clinical settings. To address this issue, I studied the developmental pathways taken by pluripotent stem cells as they differentiate into various endodermal and mesodermal cell types.
As I was finishing up my doctoral work at both Cambridge and A*STAR, I was offered a post as a Research Fellow at the Genome Institute of Singapore, and then I was quickly promoted to Senior Research Fellow. Shortly after, I accepted positions as a Siebel Investigator and an Instructor in the Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at Stanford University. My lab has received grants from a wide range of agencies, such as the Siebel Investigators and the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine.
However, it has been shown to be a very difficult task to educate pluripotent stem cells to differentiate into a pure population of a particular type of cell. Many of the existing differentiation procedures provide very variable cell populations that aren’t useful for either basic or clinical research. This is true for virtually every technique used to perform differentiation. In order to solve this issue, I tracked the developmental pathway taken by pluripotent stem cells as they differentiate into several endodermal and mesodermal cell types. My research aimed to determine the mechanisms by which pluripotent stem cells can undergo differentiation into specific lineages.
The Genome Institute of Singapore hired me as a Research Fellow when I completed my doctoral studies at the University of Cambridge and A*STAR simultaneously and later advanced me to Senior Research Fellow. After I graduated with a doctorate from both universities at once. Later, I accepted a position as a Siebel Investigator and an instructorship at the Stanford Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, and I relocated my lab to the Stanford University campus. Several organizations, including the Siebel Investigators and the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, have generously funded my research group’s efforts.
