Shalamar is a vocal group from the United States that has been active since the late 1970s and 1980s. They specialize in R&B and soul music. Howard Hewett, Jody Watley, and Jeffrey Daniel were members of Shalamar’s classic lineup on the SOLAR label. Jermaine Stewart was also a member of the group. Dick Griffey, a booking agent for Soul Train, and Don Cornelius, the founder and producer of the program, first conceptualized the group as a disco-oriented gathering.
With Cornelius as their leader, they became a dancing trio that had a significant impact.[3]: According to the British Hit Singles & Albums, they were considered fashion idols and trendsetters and instrumental in bringing the concept of “body-popping” to the United Kingdom. Griffey is the one who came up with their name. The first song attributed to Shalamar was “Uptown Festival” (1977), recorded at Bolic Sound, the studio owned by Ike and Tina Turner, in 1976.
Soul Train Records was the label that issued the album. The album’s popularity prompted Griffey and Don Cornelius to replace session vocalists with Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel, two of the most famous dancers on Soul Train, to join Gary Mumford, the original lead singer of the Shalamar band. During recording the band’s second album, Disco Gardens (1978), which contained the smash song “Take That to the Bank,” Gerald Brown filled the role that Mumford had previously had.
Brown departed from the band due to disagreements with the lack of payment from Griffey and SOLAR (an abbreviation for Sound of Los Angeles Records). Howard Hewett took over for Brown in 1979. The year 1979 was when the band became affiliated with producer Leon Sylvers III, signed a contract with SOLAR, and had a million-dollar success with the song “The Second Time Around” (1979). In terms of success, the “classic” group consisting of Hewett, Watley, and Daniel would be the most productive.
The group had a streak of success in the United Kingdom with songs such as “Take That to the Bank” (1978) and “I Owe You One” (1980). Additionally, the group’s album Friends (1982) included several successful songs, including “I Can Make You Feel Good” (1982), “A Night to Remember,” “There It Is,” and the tune “Friends.” In addition, the album, which included songs from the pop, disco, and soul genres, was a massive success in the United Kingdom in 1982.
The band’s record sales in the United Kingdom rose when Daniel showed off his body-popping dancing talents on the music program Top of the Pops, which was broadcast on BBC Television. This was the first time that the moonwalk was seen on television.[8]: After seeing Daniel Shalamar perform on Soul Train, Michael Jackson became a fan of Shalamar for several reasons, mainly Daniel and his dancing movements.
Following the event, Jackson and Daniel got together, and Jackson traveled with his sister Janet, who was 12 years old, to Disneyland to see Shalamar play. Both the “Bad” and “Smooth Criminal” music videos that were released by Jackson’s album Bad (1987) were co-choreographed by Daniel and Jackson Jr.With the release of Big Fun (1979), the Hewett-Watley-Daniel configuration of Shalamar was able to achieve a total of five gold albums in the United States.
In 1980, the album Three for Love was certified platinum; in 1982, Friends was also certified platinum; in 1983, The Look was certified platinum; and in 1984, Heartbreak was certified platinum. The departure of Watley and Daniel from Shalamar occurred in 1983, before the release of The Look, as a result of disagreements that happened inside the band as well as problems with Dick Griffey and SOLAR. Even though The Look did not achieve the same popularity as Friends the year before, it produced several hit songs in the United Kingdom, including “Disappearing Act.”
“Dead Giveaway” and “Over and Over” were nominated for Grammys, and they included a new wave/synth-pop style that was more prominent than on prior albums. Shalamar reached number seventeen on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with the song “Dancing in the Sheets,” which was included on the soundtrack album for the film Footloose. Additionally, Shalamar contributed the song “Don’t Get Stopped in Beverly Hills,” which was written by Hewett, Free, and David “Hawk” Wolinski, to the soundtrack for the film Beverly Hills Cop, which was released in 2013.
That was the album awarded the Grammy Prize in 1985 for Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Special; the prize was presented to each of the fourteen songwriters who contributed to the soundtrack. The songs “Dancing in the Sheets” and “Don’t Get Stopped in Beverly Hills” were featured on Shalamar’s eighth studio album, Heartbreak, released in November 1984 and became a platinum-selling classic.
As part of Babyface’s million-selling song “This Is for the Lover in You,” which was a version of a successful track from Shalamar’s platinum album Three for Love (1980), Watley collaborated with Hewett and Daniel to participate on the record in 1996. During the music video production, the three individuals who had previously been a part of Shalamar brought themselves back together digitally on screen. After that, Hewett, Watley, and Daniel appeared on Top of the Pops in the United Kingdom in 1996, when they sang the song with Babyface and LL Cool J.
It was the first and only live performance the legendary three had given together since 1983, even though this single release was under their separate identities. In 1999, Howard Hewett and Jeffrey Daniel recreated Shalamar and performed it in Japan. After this, tours of the United Kingdom were placed in 2000, 2001, and 2003. In 2001, Shalamar continued to tour with Howard Hewett as a lineup member.
