Seattle Seahawks Bio

A professional American football team that plays their home games in Seattle is known as the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks are a member club of the National Football Conference (NFC) West, which they rejoined in 2002 as part of a conference realignment. They participate in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the NFC West. In 1976, the club became a member of the National Football League (NFL) as an expansion franchise in the National Football Conference (NFC). Between the years 1977 and 2001, Seattle was a member of the Western division of the American Football Conference (AFC).

Since 2002, they have been playing their home games at Lumen Field, which is located in the SoDo area of Seattle. Before that, they had previously played their home games at the Kingdome (1976–1999) and Husky Stadium (1994 and 2000–2001). The term “12s” (which was once known as the “12th Man”) or “12th Fan” has been used to refer to the aggregate crowd of Seahawks supporters.

The fans of the team achieved the Guinness World Record for the loudest crowd noise at a sporting event on two separate occasions within a short period. The first time, they registered 136.6 decibels during a game against the San Francisco 49ers in September 2013, and the second time, they registered 137.6 decibels during a Monday Night Football game against the New Orleans Saints in December of that same year.

With the distinction of being the only National Football League team to be based in the Pacific Northwest region of North America, the Seattle Seahawks garner support from a vast geographical area that encompasses not only portions of the states of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Utah in the United States, but also the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan in Canada.

In addition to being the only club to have participated in both the AFC Championship Game and the NFC Championship Game, the Seahawks have won 11 division crowns and three conference championships combined. The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated them by a score of 21–10 in Super Bowl XL, the Denver Broncos defeated them by a score of 43–8 to win their first title in Super Bowl XLVIII, and the New England Patriots defeated them by a score of 28–24 in Super Bowl XLIX. Each of these three Super Bowls was their first appearance in the championship game.

The achievements that players Kenny Easley, Walter Jones, Steve Hutchinson, Cortez Kennedy, and Steve Largent achieved while playing with the Seahawks were the primary or only reason for their induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Additionally, players Dave Brown, Jacob Green, Dave Krieg, Curt Warner, Jim Zorn, Matt Hasselbeck, and Shaun Alexander have been put into the Seahawks Ring of Honor. Additionally, head coaches Chuck Knox and Mike Holmgren, radio announcer Pete Gross, and team owner Paul Allen have all been inducted into the Ring of Honor.

By one of the terms of the merger between the American Football League and the National Football League in 1970, the National Football League started making plans to increase the number of teams from 26 to 28. In June of 1972, a group of prominent members of the Seattle community and business community made public their plan to purchase a National Football League franchise for the city of Seattle under the name Seattle Professional Football Inc. The National Football League (NFL) awarded the city an expansion franchise in June of 1974.

Pete Rozelle, the Commissioner of the National Football League, announced in December of that year that Lloyd W. Nordstrom, who was representing the Nordstrom family as majority partners for the consortium, had officially signed the franchise deal. The new franchise recruited John Thompson, a former executive director of the National Football League Management Council and a former official for the Washington Huskies, to serve as the general manager of the new team in March of 1975.

After a public naming contest that received more than 20,000 submissions and over 1,700 names, the Seattle Seahawks were chosen as the team’s name on June 17, 1975. The word “seahawk” is another name for the osprey. There are also pioneers, skippers, and lumberjacks in this category. As the inaugural head coach of the Seahawks, Thompson recruited and hired Jack Patera, who had previously worked as an assistant coach for the Minnesota Vikings. The announcement of Patera’s appointment took place on January 3, 1976.

The Seattle Seahawks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took turns picking unprotected players from the other 26 teams in the league during the expansion draft, which took place on March 30 and 31, 1976. The choices were rotating between the two clubs. Steve Niehaus, a defensive lineman, was selected by the Seahawks with the second overall choice in the 1976 draft. The Seahawks used this pick to acquire Niehaus.

In a preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, which took place on August 1, 1976, the team made its debut on the field for the first time inside the Kingdome, which had just opened its doors at the time. Kenny Easley, a safety who won a spot in the Hall of Fame and was a leader of the defensive unit for the Seattle Seahawks in the 1980s, was a top defensive player in the National Football League and one of the Seahawks’ all-time finest players.

During the post-merger period, the Seahawks are the only club in the National Football League to transfer conferences twice. The club started its season in 1976 in the aforementioned National Football Conference West (NFC West), but after one season, it joined the American Football Conference West (AFC West) alongside the Buccaneers. The league decided to implement this realignment as part of the expansion plan in 1976. The purpose of this realignment was to ensure that both expansion clubs would have the opportunity to play each other twice and every other NFL franchise once (those that were in their conference at the time) during their first two seasons.

In their first two seasons, the Seahawks were victorious in both of their games against the Buccaneers. The Seahawks scored their first win of the regular season against the Buccaneers in the inaugural season. In 1983, the Seahawks decided to appoint Chuck Knox as their head coach. Following a season in which they finished with a record of 9–7, the Seahawks made their debut in the postseason. They secured victories against the Denver Broncos in the Wild Card Round and then the Miami Dolphins, but ultimately fell short in the AFC Championship game against the Los Angeles Raiders, who went on to win the Super Bowl.
