Sarah Vowell’s birthday is December 27th, and she was born in the city of Muskogee, Oklahoma. She is a well-known social critic, writer, journalist, and author from the United States. Vowell received her Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages and Literature from Montana State University in 1993. She then went on to get her Master of Arts in Art History from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1996. In the year 1996, Vowell was honored with the Music Journalism Award.
Vowell is the author of a number of non-fiction works about American history and culture, several of which have been top sellers in The New York Times. She offers personal, often humorous accounts of everything from presidents and their assassins to colonial religious fanatics, as well as thoughts on American Indians, utopian dreamers, pop music, and the occasional cranky cartographer by examining the connections between the American past and present. These accounts range from presidents and their assassins to colonial religious fanatics.
The New England Puritans, their voyage to the new world, and the changes they brought about are the subjects of The Wordy Shipmates, a book written by Vowell. Her book, published in 2005 and titled “Assassination Vacation,” is a chilling and, to the author’s surprise, humorous road journey around tourist sites dedicated to the assassinations of Presidents Lincoln, Garfield, and McKinley. Vowell investigates what these acts of political violence tell about the nature of our country and our modern culture.
She embarks on this journey to learn about the peculiar, symbolic, and extraordinary history of the fifty states armed with the witty views and reportage that are Vowell’s signature. When she investigates the spot where Manifest Destiny received a sunburn, she discovers the United States of America once again, blemishes and all. Vowell served as the president of the board of directors of 826NYC, a nonprofit tutoring and writing center in Brooklyn that caters to kids between the ages of 6 and 18, from the time the organization was founded in 2004 until 2014. She continues to serve on the advisory board for both this organization and its sister organization in Los Angeles, which is known as 826LA. This week, we talk with author Sarah Vowell as well as author Brad Tyer.
Sarah is an author whose books have sold quite well, a journalist, and someone who does a lot of other cool things. At the Montana Free Press, Brad serves as both an editor and the manager of the newsroom. These two individuals have collaborated to make some unique material in honor of the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Montana State Constitution and to investigate some of the incredible tales that lie behind its development. A panel event celebrating the anniversary will be held at Montana State University on March 22, the day when the actual signing by the delegates took place. Sarah and Brad’s coworker at the Montana Free Press, John Adams, will serve as the moderator for the event.
Vowell will make an appearance on Friday evening at 7 o’clock at the Chappelear Drama Center on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University, which is located at 45 Rowland Avenue in Delaware. This event, which will need tickets and will be hosted by the Delaware County District Library, will consist of a moderated discussion with questions from the audience as well as a book signing. V
Vowell pointed out that when the Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette of France returned to the United States in 1824 “for a 13-month victory lap around the country,” it was during one of the most contentious elections in the history of the United States. This was 50 years after Lafayette’s first visit to the United States. It was the first and only time that anything like this occurred, and it led to John Quincy Adams being elected president in a contest with four candidates despite the fact that he did not win either the electoral vote or the popular vote.
Vowell is the author of seven nonfiction books about American history and culture. She received a degree in modern languages and literature from Michigan State University in 1993 and went on to become a New York Times bestselling author. The summer reading selection at Michigan State University in 2020 will be her book, “Lafayette in the Somewhat United States.”
In addition, Vowell is a familiar face on a variety of late-night comedy programs, where she is regularly included as a guest due to her reputation for wit and acute social observation. In the animated films “The Incredibles” (2004) and “Incredibles 2” (2018), she provided the voice of the adolescent superheroine Violet Parr. Both films were released by Pixar.
Between the years 1996 and 2008, Vowell worked as a contributing editor for the public radio program “This American Life.” During that time, she was responsible for producing a wide variety of commentary and documentaries and traveled the nation performing in many of the show’s live events. She has been a columnist for a variety of publications, including Salon.com, Time, San Francisco Weekly, GQ, and Spin, among others, and now writes opinion pieces for The New York Times.
826NYC is a nonprofit tutoring and writing facility for kids in Brooklyn between the ages of 6 and 18, and Vowell served as the president of the board there. She continues to serve on the advisory board for both this organization and its sister organization in Los Angeles, which is known as 826LA. President Waded Cruzado of Montana State University expressed her confidence that Vowell’s personal experience would motivate not just the students who will soon be enrolling at MSU but also residents of the Bozeman community.
