Samuel Roy Hagar, popularly known as the Red Rocker[2], is an American singer, composer, and guitarist born on October 13, 1947. With the hard rock band Montrose, he first gained notoriety in the early 1970s. He later had success as a solo artist and had a hit with “I Can’t Drive 55” in 1984. He was a commercial success when he took over for David Lee Roth as Van Halen’s second lead singer in 1985. However, he departed the band in 1996. From 2003 until 2005, he joined the group once again. Hagar was a member of Van Halen when he was elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Bobby, his father, had found employment at the Kaiser Steel Mill there, working in the open hearth. After serving in World War II, friends said he was “mentally wounded” when he returned home. Hagar said that his father was the “town drunk,” calling him “a terrible drinker and crazy” who mistreated his wife and kids. When their father got too aggressive, Hagar’s mother would periodically take the kids to a neighbouring orange grove where they would sleep in the vehicle. Bobby tended splurging the rent money on booze, so the Hagar family moved around a lot. As a child, Hagar recalled residing in nine different houses in Fontana. When Hagar was eleven years old, Bobby’s mother Gladys took the kids and permanently split up with him.
Under the guidance of A&R manager Carter, Hagar was having some success as a solo artist on Capitol Records by the late 1970s. He had albums like Nine on a Ten Scale and successes like “Red,” which helped him develop his identity and style and earned him the moniker “the Red Rocker.” Carter sought to produce Top 40 songs, but Hagar believed that Carter did not play to his strengths as “a heavy-metal person” and instead chose to play to the strengths of other musicians.
During Boston’s “Don’t Look Back” tour in 1978–1979, Hagar served as the opening act. The tour was set to continue in San Bernardino, California. Before the performance, the Knack, a rising Los Angeles club band, took Hagar’s spot on the lineup. For his self-produced 1979 album Street Machine, Hagar broke up his collaboration with Carter. Hagar thought that Capitol was not fully behind him after it and 1980’s Danger Zone failed to find success. In addition, Hagar wrote songs for other bands that scored successes, including Rick Springfield’s “I’ve Done Everything for You,” a top 10 rocker. “Keep on Rockin” and “Red,” two Hagar tracks that Bette Midler recorded.
When Hagar and Eddie Van Halen shared a stage at a festival in 1978, Eddie Van Halen introduced himself as a “Montrose geek” and confessed that Montrose had been his favourite band. According to Hagar, Eddie had been greatly affected by Montrose, who said “Not so much his soloing as the chording; yes, he borrowed some of Montrose’s wide open chord style. The large open A, D, and E are the three biggest openings. To make it as heavy with one guitar as you could with as much openness as possible. That was also very much Ronnie’s fashion.”
Hagar gathered fruit, distributed newspapers, and mowed lawns to make money as a child. While still in high school, he achieved academic success and fell in love with music. Using a $40 guitar that he had ordered from a Sears catalogue, he taught himself how to play the guitar. When he was 14 years old, he was the frontman of the Fabulous Castilles, his first band. At the age of 17, Hagar travelled to San Bernardino and sneaked into the Swing Auditorium to see the Rolling Stones make their US debut in 1964. He often attended Dick Dale’s surf music performances at the Riverside National Guard Armory.
Hagar “wanted to get out of Fontana as fast as I could” after finishing high school. He relocated to the adjacent city of Riverside, where he joined a few neighbourhood bands and got a job managing the music section of a local retailer. As the main singer and rhythm guitarist for the Johnny Fortune Band at first, Hagar then participated in a number of other pre-Montrose bands, including Big Bang, Skinny, Dustcloud, Cotton, Jimmy, the Justice Brothers, and Manhole. Before moving to San Francisco, The Justice Brothers were the house band in a pub named “The Nightclub” in San Bernardino.
David Lauser, a drummer who would later become Hagar’s buddy and musical collaborator for decades, was first introduced to Hagar during this time in Riverside. After getting married, Hagar relocated to San Francisco. Soon after arriving in San Francisco, two of the band’s members were taken into custody on drug-related charges, leaving Hagar penniless and without a band. Then, for many months, he supported himself by driving a dump truck for his father-in-law in New York while he got a new band together.
Hagar moved back to Fontana in 1970 to focus solely on his music career together with his wife and new child. He asserts that when he was living in Fontana, “a ship and two beings inside of this spacecraft” came to visit him while he was lying in bed. “And they were linked to me and able to access my thoughts by some enigmatic wireless connection, he said, adding, “I was sort of waking up.” They murmured, without speaking a word to one other, “Oh, he’s waking up.” We must go. They launched a numerical code, however it was not by our system.
Suddenly, the link was broken with a loud “pow.”” Hagar was highly moved by the encounter, prompting him to seek a psychic’s advice in Yucaipa, California. The psychic advised Hagar to return to San Francisco, where fame was waiting for him.In addition to Sammy’s Beach Bar rum, Hagar developed the Cabo Wabo tequila brand and restaurant franchise. He now sings lead for the bands Chickenfoot and Sammy Hagar and the Circle, among other musical endeavours. On AXS TV, Hagar also hosts the show Rock & Roll Road Trip with Sammy Hagar.
