Bio

Sally Field was born in Pasadena, California to actor Richard Dryden Field and actress Margaret Field. Psychically, Sally felt the effects of her parents’ tumultuous relationship. By 1950, they had separated and filed for divorce. Sally’s mother wed Hollywood stuntman Jack Mahoney, who raised her daughter with a heavy hand. She attended Van Nuys’s “Portola Middle School” and “Birmingham High School,” where she participated in both academics and extracurriculars including acting and cheerleading.

Field’s stepfather urged her to pursue acting, so after she graduated from high school, she enrolled in a course at ‘Columbia Studios. A casting director for the TV show Gidget had seen her work and urged her to try out for the main character. The field was selected from a pool of seventy-five hopefuls following a series of intensive auditions. After only one season, ‘Gidget’ was canceled, but the show’s star, Sally Field, found unanticipated success when it was rebroadcast, particularly among teens.

Critics were harsh on “The Flying Nun,” but fans loved it. The field was dissatisfied with the part because she didn’t want to be typecast as a comedic actress. The suspenseful holiday drama “Home for the Holidays” was one of the television movies she was in between 1970 and 1974. She also had appearances on a few television productions, including the one-season sitcom The Girl with Something Extra. It was in the groundbreaking 1976 that she starred in the miniseries “Sybil,” in which she played a student with multiple-personality disorder. She also co-starred with famed actor Jeff Bridges that same year in the film “Stay Hungry.”

After the success of ‘Sybil,’ she went on to play more significant roles in films including ‘Smokey and the Bandit,’ ‘The End,’ ‘Hooper,’ and ‘Norma Rae,’ for which she won an Academy Award. Field focused solely on film work from 1981 to 1990, during which time he experimented with a wide variety of characters, collaborated with other talented actors, and garnered numerous plaudits and prizes.

The films “Absence of Malice,” “Kiss Me Goodbye,” “Places in the Heart,” “Murphy’s Romance,” “Steel Magnolias,” and “Murphy’s Revenge,” all starring James Garner and/or Jeff Bridges, and “Steel Magnolias,” starring an ensemble cast that included a young Julia Roberts, stand out as highlights from this decade. Beginning in the 1990s, she was cast in more major supporting roles, including standout turns alongside Robin Williams and Tom Hanks in such films as Mrs. Doubtfire and Forrest Gump.

She appeared on television in a number of films and series between 1995 and 2000, including “A Woman of Independent Means,” “Merry Christmas, George Bailey,” “David Copperfield,” and others. Her first film as director, “The Christmas Tree,” aired on television in 1996. In the years that followed, she directed her debut picture, Beautiful, and an episode of the TV miniseries From the Earth to the Moon.

The field has maintained a career as a performer since the year 2000, appearing in both movies and television series. Legally Blonde 2 was a commercial success, and she had a role in it.  She has recently played Mrs. Abraham Lincoln in the period drama “Lincoln” and the role of “Aunt May” in “The Amazing Spider-Man.”

She’ll be back as ‘Aunt May’ in the 2014 Spider-Man sequel. A dramatic adaptation of the true story of a woman named Norma Rae, starring Sally Field, was a huge critical and economic hit when it was released in 1979. Field received acclaim for portraying the protagonist, a tenacious mill worker on minimum wage who strives to organize the workers into a union. The film’s budget was $4.5 million, and it made over $22 million at the box office.

The dramatic parts that Sally Field had on film and TV are the ones that have stuck with audiences. Her stepfather verbally and emotionally abused her as a youngster and a teen. She was able to relax by taking part in drama and other school-related extracurriculars. At age 21, she was offered the lead role in a sitcom called “The Flying Nun,” which had an unusual premise even for television. For most people her age, simply appearing in a TV show would be enough, but Field, showing maturity beyond her years, yearned for roles with depth.

Field made two major efforts throughout her career to avoid being typecast, and each time she was rewarded with more diverse parts. Numerous accolades and prizes have been bestowed upon her throughout her career. In an industry where winning one ‘Oscar Award’ is considered the pinnacle of one’s career, she won two of them, that too in the very competitive category of ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’. She is also well-known for her work on television, where she has won multiple Emmys for her roles in shows including ER and Brothers & Sisters. Still today, Field never fails to amaze and enthrall with her riveting stage presence.
