The Nanaimo District Primary Track and Field Championships served as the culminating athletic competition for the region’s primary schoolchildren during the most recent academic year. The annual competition, which took place at Rotary Bowl the month before last, made a triumphant comeback after being canceled due to COVID-19. It included qualifiers from around 25 different local schools. This week, we take a look at the top three finishers in the girls’ competitions.

Anya Caul, a runner from Departure Bay, came in first place in the 100-meter sprint for the tyke class. Hayden Esleyer of Coal Tyee finished in second place overall and also came in second in the 200-meter race. Elsie Feagan of Hammond Bay finished in third place in the 100-meter dash, while Amelia Switzer, also from Hammond Bay, finished in third place in the 200-meter dash. Cilaire’s Claire Hildebrand finished in second place in the 600-meter event. Makena Racher, who competes for Quarterway, came in third place in the 600 meters and won the 1200 meters. On the track, the action included bantam girls, including Mountain View’s Karlin Korkowski, who won the 100-meter event by outsprinting Pleasant Valley’s Danaea Brand and McGirr’s Charlotte Shepherd. Shepherd came out on top to win the 200-meter race, while Brand finished in second place.

Leia Wells from Quarterway, who also came in second place in the 600-meter race, took third place. Skyla Lewis of North Oyster won both the 600 meters and the 1200 meters in the lengthier track lengths, making her a double winner in both events.
