Bio

Russell Simmons was born on October 4, 1957. His father, Daniel Simmons Sr., was a public school administrator, while his mother, Evelyn Simmons, worked as a park superintendent. Joseph Simmons and Daniel Simmons Jr., also artists, are his siblings. He has Libra as his zodiac sign. His parents were ardent advocates for equality and the arts. Simmons’ family relocated to the Hollis section of Queens when he was eight years old. There, at age 19, Simmons joined the Seven Immortals gang after being engaged in drugs. A few years later, he was no longer involved with criminal activity since one of his gang members was killed by an opposing group. In 1975, he dropped out of City College of New York and went on to promote local musicians like Kurtis Blow.

From the projects of Queens to the top of the music industry and beyond, Simmons has come a long way. His mom supported his dream of starting a music production company. Beginning his career as a teenage hip-hop producer, Simmons has since branched out into music production and publishing, as well as fashion, film, and Broadway. Simmons, Joey, and two friends, Darryl McDaniel and Jason Mizell formed Run-D.M.C., one of the most influential rap groups of all time. Because of their look, their lyrics, and their beat, they were the first rap group to appear on MTV.

In 1984, Rick Rubin, a punk rock fan and hip-hop culture devotee studying at New York University, was introduced to Simmons. For the purpose of exposing hip-hop musicians to a wider audience, the two partners established Def Jam Productions. Even though he has expanded his career into new fields, Simmons has never abandoned the hip-hop roots he holds dear.

When it comes to making money off of hip-hop, no one has done more than Russell Simmons. Simmons’ passion for music from the streets and his marketing prowess as co-founder of the Def Jam label propelled hip-hop into the mainstream of American society and the media. Simmons is sometimes likened to Motown mogul Berry Gordy; nevertheless, Simmons made sure that his musicians stayed as uncompromisingly rebellious as possible, whilst Gordy tried to develop assimilationist R&B that would be regarded as respectable by pop listeners.

Hip-hop became the go-to genre for a whole generation of young people because of this unwavering commitment to the music’s original influences. Simmons was the businessman who guided rap music into the mainstream, growing his own communications firm into the largest black-owned organization in the industry. He was one of the most revered individuals in the rap industry by the time he sold Def Jam for $100 million in 1999, and he never stopped caring about the trajectory of rap music afterward.

Russell “Rush” Simmons was a native of the Hollis neighborhood of Queens, New York, and he worked as a street hustler during his adolescence. A student of sociology at CCNY-Harlem, he spent his free time in 1978 organizing early hip-hop events in Harlem and Queens, frequently with his friend Curtis Walker. Walker became a rapper under the alias Kurtis Blow, and Simmons signed on as his manager. Simmons also contributed to the creation of Blow’s 1979 hit “Christmas Rappin’.”

He had already founded Rush Productions and left school to devote himself full-time to the business of managing artists. In 1982, he signed his younger brother Joseph’s band as a client, gave them the name Run-D.M.C., and over the next few years, he oversaw their meteoric rise to stardom. Meanwhile, Simmons crossed paths with Rick Rubin, a producer and punk rock lover who shared his appreciation for unfiltered, aggressive, street-level rap. Simmons and Rubin put out a few thousand dollars each in 1984 to launch the Def Jam record label, and after seeing early success with LL Cool J, they signed a distribution deal with CBS.

Over the course of the next few years, Def Jam expanded to become an industry powerhouse. Together with LL Cool J, the label has put out critically acclaimed and seminal works by artists including Slick Rick, Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, EPMD, 3rd Bass, and Onyx. Krush Groove, a fictitious film about the foundation of Def Jam, starred Blair Underwood as Simmons and featured cameos from Rick Rubin and Run-D.M.C. Despite being lambasted by critics for being a “plotless platform for musical performances,” the film was a huge success among hip-hop audiences.

After Rubin’s departure from Def Jam in 1988, Simmons became the sole CEO. That same year saw the release of a second picture, Tougher Than Leather, which starred Run-D.M.C. It was an indication that Simmons was expanding his hip-hop label into a full-fledged entertainment empire. Beginning in 1991, he produced the ground-breaking HBO series Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam, a platform for black stand-up comedians to perform uncut routines for a wider audience. The show ran for seven seasons, during which time it featured the likes of Martin Lawrence, Chris Rock, Jamie Foxx, Bernie Mac, Cedric the Entertainer, Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, and Chris Tucker.

After the success of his 1992 men’s apparel label Phat Farm, which was handled by former supermodel Kimora Lee, Simmons continued to diversify his commercial holdings. Filmmaking called him back in 1995, and he produced Eddie Murphy’s comeback smash The Nutty Professor the following year. One World, a hip-hop lifestyle magazine, debuted that same year as a spinoff of Lee’s syndicated TV show. Gridlock and How to Be a Player were two more film projects. Meanwhile, Def Jam rebounded from a decline during the West Coast G-funk era by releasing albums by musicians like Redman, Method Man, DMX, and Ja Rule.
