Bio

Andre Charles, RuPaul  is an American drag performer, television host, singer, actor, and model. He has won several honours, including 12 Primetime Emmy Awards, three GLAAD Media Awards, a Critics’ Choice Television Award, two Billboard Music Awards, and a Tony Award. He is most known for creating, presenting, and judging the reality competition series RuPaul’s Drag Race. The “Queen of Drag” has called him. RuPaul is regarded as the most financially successful drag performer in the United States, and according to Fortune, he is “certainly the most renowned drag performer in the whole world.”  He has garnered 12 Primetime Emmy Awards for his work on RuPaul’s Drag Race, making him the most-awarded person of colour in Primetime Emmy history.

He was included as one of the Time 100 most important persons in the world in 2017.  In addition to writing and recording music, he continues working in the cinema and television industries. As of 2022, he has recorded fourteen studio albums and was the producer of the musical A Strange Loop, which won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The son of Irving Andrew Charles and Ernestine “Toni”  Charles, RuPaul was born in San Diego on November 17, 1960. Both of his parents were native Louisianans.

His mother gave him the name “Ru,” which is short for roux, the ingredient used to make gumbo and other creole stews and soups.  According to Finding Your Roots, his DNA has a 30% European and a 70% African mix.  He and his three sisters moved reside with their mother, a devout Seventh-day Adventist, after his parents’ divorce in 1967.  He went to Patrick Henry High School and was brought up in the Catholic religion. Supermodel of the World, a dance/house album by RuPaul, was recorded in 1993. It was published by the rap label Tommy Boy, and it gave rise to the popular dance song “Supermodel”. On the Billboard Hot 100, the song peaked at position 45. It appeared on the UK Singles Chart and peaked at number 39 in the top 40.

The Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, where the song peaked at number two, was where it gained the greatest popularity. The song gained popularity via radio play, extensive MTV music video rotation, and TV appearances on shows like The Arsenio Hall Show. For MAC Cosmetics, RuPaul secured a modelling deal. He appeared on many billboards in drag, often with the caption “I am the MAC girl.” Lettin’ It All Hang Out, his autobiography, was also published. He helped promote the book in part by making a guest appearance on All My Children in 1995. The episode’s plot included the setting of the talk programme “The Cutting Edge” hosted by Erica Kane.

He made his first of two cameos in the Brady Bunch movies the same year, as Jan’s female guidance counsellor. On his own RuCo Inc. music company, RuPaul released his fourth album, Red Hot, in 2004. It was played in clubs and on dance radio, but there was hardly any press notice. He wrote about how the entertainment business, and especially the homosexual press, had let him down on his blog. In one instance, Entertainment Weekly reportedly declined to evaluate the record and asked him to provide a humorous comment for a fashion feature instead. He compared it to “an invitation to a party, but only if they’ll serve, for a black person.” Red Hot’s first song, “Looking Good, Feeling Gorgeous,” debuted at number two on the dance chart despite his evident discontent with the release. “Workout,” the second, reached at number five.

With Tom Trujillo, the third and album’s last single, “People Are People,” reached at number 10. Only the Top Electronic Albums chart saw the album, where it peaked at number nine. Later, RuPaul observed, “The term “betrayed” may not be accurate. The word “betrayed” suggests that there was some kind of promise made to me that was never kept. I was more disappointed. It didn’t seem like a betrayal to me. In the entertainment industry, nothing is certain, and you know this from the start. But I have no idea what transpired. It appeared that unless I was prepared to adopt the position that the majority press has given to homosexual people, namely that of slaves of straight values, I would not be able to get attention for my record.”

RuPaul and his sister Renetta relocated to Atlanta at age 15 to pursue performing arts education. RuPaul, who worked at Atlanta’s renowned Plaza Theatre, struggled in the 1980s as a singer and filmmaker. He made his television debut in 1982 on The American Music Show, a public access variety programme in Atlanta where he continued to make regular appearances throughout the years. He also contributed to underground filmmaking, working on the record and low-budget movie Star Booty. He often performed as a bar dancer or with his band, Wee Wee Pole, at the Celebrity Club in Atlanta, which Larry Tee runs.  Along with drag performer Vaginal Davis, RuPaul joined Glen Meadmore as a support vocalist.  In 1989, while performing as an extra in The B-52s’ music video for “Love Shack,” RuPaul received his first significant national recognition.

Early in the 1990s, RuPaul operated in the Georgia club scene with his full birth name. He began by taking part in gender-bending shows, and he later played alone and with other bands at a number of New York City nightclubs, most notably the Pyramid Club. In the one-act science-fiction spoof “My Pet Homo,” written and produced by Jon Michael Johnson for Cooper Square Productions, he starred alongside New York drag artist Mona Foot. He participated in the Wigstock: The Movie documentary and appeared in the yearly Wigstock drag event for a number of years. RuPaul gained notoriety in the UK during the 1990s for his performances on the weekly World of Wonder television programme Manhattan Cable, which was hosted by American Laurie Pike and focused on New York City’s public-access television network.

born in San Diego and reared there Later, in Atlanta, RuPaul pursued a performing arts degree. He made his home in New York City, where he rose to prominence as a mainstay of the LGBT nightlife. His initial track, “Supermodel ,” off his debut studio album Supermodel of the World, brought him recognition on a global scale as a drag performer. He was the first drag queen to score a significant cosmetics campaign when he was hired as a spokesman for MAC Cosmetics in 1994. He also raised money for the Mac AIDS Fund during this time. After receiving his own talk programme on VH1, The RuPaul Show, he co-hosted the morning radio show on WKTU with Michelle Visage for more than 100 episodes.

RuPaul’s Drag Race has produced fourteen seasons since its 2009 debut in the United States. The programme has also been successful abroad. The programme has various foreign iterations, including Canada’s Drag Race and RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. The original show’s spin-offs RuPaul’s Drag U, RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, and RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race were all inspired by this. On other reality television programmes like Skin Wars, Good Work, and Gay for Play Game Show Starring RuPaul, he serves as the host.
