Roger Waters was born on September 6, 1943. He was born into a prosperous family in the English town of Great Bookham. His birth sign is Virgo, and he identifies as Christian. He attended Morley Memorial Junior School and Cambridgeshire High School for Boys in Cambridge, England for his primary and secondary education. After that, he enrolled at an English institution and eventually earned his degree.
Eric Fletcher and Mary Waters are Roger’s parents. Both his father, Eric Fletcher Waters, a member of the military, and his mother, Mary Waters, a teacher, are educators. John D. Waters, his brother, operates a taxi service in the UK capital. His first wife wasn’t Kamilah Chavis; it was studio potter Judith Trim; they wed in 1969 and divorced in 1975. After that, in 1976, he wed Carolyne Christie; they divorced in 1992. They have a daughter named India Waters and a son named Harry Waters. His 1993 marriage to Priscilla Phillips resulted in the birth of their son Jack Fletcher, although the pair later divorced.
Waters, Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright formed Pink Floyd in 1965, a seminal British rock band. Their first album, 1967’s “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn,” was a huge success. Syd’s deteriorating mental health in 1968 led to his departure from the band, and David Gilmour joined in his place on guitar and vocals.
Along with Waters, he produced such classics as “Dark Side of the Moon,” “Wish You Were Here,” and “Meddle.” At some point, Waters took the wheel and became the de facto leader of the group. Over time, he came to be recognized as the album’s major writer, instrumental in the creation of such landmark works as “Animals,” “The Wall,” and “The Final Cut” on his own.
In the 1980s, Waters’ domineering style led to tensions within the band and the eventual alienation of its members. During the sessions for “The Wall,” he fired Richard Wright after a disagreement with Gilmour’s ideas. Waters quit the band after the publication of “The Final Cut” in 1983, the group’s final studio album. The remaining members of Pink Floyd, including David Gilmour and Nick Mason, refused to split after his demand and went to court to prevent him from utilizing the band’s name. The band continued to release records even after he dropped the case. Yet, Waters was allowed access to his solo work, “The Wall.”
After leaving Pink Floyd, he released three solo albums that failed to match the success of his work with the band. Albums like “Dark Side of the Moon,” “Wish You Were Here,” and “The Wall” all owe a great deal to Roger Waters’ vast conceptualizations for Pink Floyd. Waters became a strong songwriter when Syd Barrett left the band, but it was his string of albums in the ’70s, each of which approached symphonic proportions, that solidified his reputation as a unique figure in rock music, known for his somber morals and dry sense of humor.
After 1992, Waters stopped focusing on making new rock music and instead composed classical works, worked as an activist, and revived his live performances of Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. His lengthy drought between albums finally ended with 2017’s Is This the Life We Actually Want.
Waters didn’t pick up an instrument until he was over 20 years old. His father, Eric, a schoolteacher, joined the British Army despite being a conscientious objector during World War II, leaving a void in his son’s life. When Roger was just five months old, his father Eric Waters was killed in action, and his mother Mary took him and his older brother to Cambridge. While attending architecture school at Regent Street Polytechnic, Waters met Syd Barratt and David Gilmour, who would later become his bandmates in Pink Floyd. Once Waters’s classmates Nick Mason and Rick Wright left the band Sigma 6, Roger replaced them with singer Keith Noble and bassist Clive Metcalfe.
With the album Dark Side of the Moon, released in 1973, Waters exercised extensive creative control. He wrote all of the lyrics, came up with the concept, and received music writing credits for all but three of the tracks. Dark Side became the defining record of Pink Floyd’s career, a phenomenon that has endured for decades. Waters wrote the semi-autobiographical rock opera The Wall after experiencing an emotional withdrawal from his audience on the tour in support of Animals. The band decided to record Roger’s The Wall rather than his solo debut, The Pros, and Disadvantages of Hitchhiking, which he presented to them in 1984.
During the production of The Wall, Wright left the band and became a contract musician, but the resulting double album in 1979 was a huge success, inspiring Alan Parker to direct a film adaptation in 1982. This subtitle foreshadowed the discord that would eventually lead to Waters’ departure from the band. After 1984’s Pros & Cons, Waters formally quit the group in 1985 and sued to have them dissolved the following year.
His petition was denied, and Waters went on with his solo career while Gilmour, Mason, and Wright kept performing as Pink Floyd. To promote his 1987 concept album Radio K.A.O.S., which he toured the world in favor of, Waters provided songs to the 1986 animated rendition of When the Wind Blows. Waters chose to resurrect The Wall as an all-star tribute concert in Berlin in July 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989. Floyd only played a handful of gigs in 1980 due to its high cost. Amused to Death, an antiwar concept album featuring Jeff Beck on guitar, was released two years later, marking his first album for Columbia. The album did well, earning silver certification in the United Kingdom, despite the lack of a supporting tour.
