Bio

Roger Federer was born on August 8, 1981. Diana is his only sibling. In 1996, he entered the I.T.F. Junior Tennis League and played in his first junior match at a tournament in Switzerland. In Wimbledon in 1998, however, he achieved his greatest success as a junior player, winning the boys’ singles final and defeating both Michal Llodra and Andy Ram in doubles matches. In the same year, he competed in and lost the U.S. Open Junior final to eventual champion David Nalbandian. Federer won the I.T.F. Junior World Championship and was ranked as the top junior player in the world by the conclusion of the year.

Federer won the 2001 Hopman Cup alongside then-world No. 1 Martina Hingis and the 2001 Milan Indoor competition as a singles player. It was against four-time reigning champion Pete Sampras at the 2001 Wimbledon Championships that he first gained widespread attention. Federer advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Sampras in five sets, but he was eliminated by Tim Henman. Federer won his first Master Series tournament a year later, at the clay Hamburg Masters. His first Grand Slam singles championship came at Wimbledon in 2003. The next year, Federer continued his winning ways by claiming his first major hard-court trophy at the Australian Open and his third Grand Slam singles title overall.

The next year, he won Wimbledon for a second time and the U.S. Open by beating Lleyton Hewitt. Throughout 2005, Federer was ranked No. 1 and won 11 singles titles, including four Masters crowns. The following year, he won a total of 12 singles tournaments, including the Swiss Indoors in Basel and the first of his three Wimbledon Championships. In 2007, Federer continued his unbeaten run. However the following year, because of a back injury, Rafael Nadal surpassed him as the best player in the world. Federer returned to competition in 2009. He broke the record for most singles titles won with 15, including the French Open.

In 2010, Federer won the Swiss Indoors, the Stockholm Open, and the A.T.P. Championships in London; he also defeated Nadal in all three tournaments. After a year of setbacks, he found success again in 2012. In another three years, he became only the fourth player since 1991 to record 9,000 career aces.  In the same year, she gave birth to a pair of female twins. The couple welcomed twin boys five years later.

Roger Federer reached the bronze medal match at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. He reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals the following year after beating Pete Sampras, and by the end of 2002, he was ranked sixth in the world. Federer captured his first Grand Slam victory at Wimbledon in 2003.

The following year, he won the Australian Open, and the U.S. Open, and successfully defended his Wimbledon crown. He earned a name for himself as a talented shotmaker, especially with his forehand, and as a gentleman and sportsman on the court. Federer won 11 of the 17 tournaments he entered in 2004, and he ended the year as the top-ranked player in the world. His 2005 statistics were as impressive, as he won 11 of 15 tournaments. These victories included Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. He also set a new record by winning 24 consecutive finals between July 2003 and November 2005.

Federer maintained his status as the best player in 2006. He also won the Australian Open and the U.S. Open, making history as the only player to ever sweep those two championships in consecutive years. At Roland Garros, he also made it to the finals but lost to Rafael Nadal of Spain. Federer played in a total of 17 tournaments in 2006, winning 12 of them and advancing to the championship match in all but one. He clinched his tenth and final Grand Slam title at the 2007 Australian Open.

Later that year, though, Nadal again thwarted his attempt to win the French Open, this time by defeating him in the championship match. In 2007, Federer and Nadal renewed their battle at Wimbledon. To become only the second male player in more than a century to win five successive Wimbledon titles, he defeated Nadal in a thrilling five-set final. In 2007, Federer broke another milestone by becoming the first man in the open era to win the U.S. Open four times in a row.

Federer’s record-setting 65-match winning streak on grass courts ended when he lost to Nadal in the 2008 Wimbledon final. Federer then paired up with another Swiss player, Stan Wawrinka, to take home the gold in men’s doubles at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. After an unprecedented 237 weeks at the top of the rankings, Federer was dethroned by Rafael Nadal in August of 2008. Federer won the U.S. Open the following month.

Federer had an injury-plagued 2013 season and made it to the finals of only one Grand Slam tournament in 2014.  One of his greatest achievements was leading Switzerland to its first-ever Davis Cup triumph that year. Open, however, he was defeated both times by Novak Djokovic. He withdrew from the rest of the 2016 tennis season shortly after losing in the Wimbledon semifinals in July due to a lingering knee ailment.

Federer, who was ranked 17th among men going into the first Grand Slam tournament of 2017, won the singles title in an epic five-set match against Nadal at the Australian Open.
