Sir Roderick David Stewart CBE is a British rock and pop singer and composer who was born on January 10, 1945. He was born and reared in London and is of English and Scottish descent. With more than 250 million albums sold globally, Stewart is one of the best-selling music artists of all time because to his unique raspy singing voice. He has had 31 top ten singles in the UK, six of which peaked at number one, and 10 albums that debuted at number one. Four of Stewart’s tracks reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100, giving him 16 top ten singles in the US. In the 2016 Birthday Honours, he received a knighthood for his contributions to music and philanthropy. Stewart’s music transitioned to a soft rock/middle-of-the-road sound in the late 1970s and early 1980s after a disco and new wave phase. Most of his albums peaked in the top 10 in the UK, Germany, and Sweden, but did less well in the US.
The album from which the song “Rhythm of My Heart” was from, 1991’s Vagabond Heart, peaked at number two in the UK and number 10 in the US, becoming his highest-charting album in ten years. He co-wrote the power ballad “All for Love” in 1993 with Bryan Adams and Sting, and it reached number one in numerous nations. He put up a string of popular CDs interpreting the Great American Songbook in the early 2000s. The youngest of Robert Joseph Stewart’s five children, Roderick David Stewart was born at 507 Archway Road in Highgate, North London, on January 10, 1945. Robert Joseph Stewart and Elsie Rebecca Gilbart had five other children.
While Elsie was English and grew up in Upper Holloway in North London, his father was Scottish and a master builder in Leith, Edinburgh. Married in 1928, the pair lived in Scotland where they had two boys and two daughters before relocating to Highgate. The family would sing and play Al Jolson songs since they were huge admirers of the singer. Stewart gathered his recordings, watched his films, studied biographies of him, and took inspiration from his stage presence and demeanour.
Little Richard’s 1956 hit song “The Girl Can’t Help It” and a Bill Haley & His Comets performance introduced him to rock and roll. The first song he learnt was the folk ballad “It Takes a Worried Man to Sing a Worried Song,” and the first album he purchased was Eddie Cochran’s “C’mon Everybody.” His father gave him a guitar in January 1959. He joined the Kool Kats, a skiffle band that played songs by Lonnie Donegan and Chas McDevitt, in 1960 alongside several of his schoolmates.
At the age of 15, Stewart dropped out of school and temporarily worked as a silk screen printer. His father had encouraged him to pursue his dream of playing professional football. He applied for trials with Third Division team Brentford F.C. in the summer of 1960. Stewart claims in his 2012 book that, in contrast to certain well-established stories, he was never signed by the club and that, after his tryouts, the club never contacted him again.
In any event, Stewart said the following on potential career paths: “Well, the life of a musician is much simpler, and I can also produce music when I’m intoxicated, but I can’t do that while playing football. I selected music… Playing football and singing are essentially the only two things I can do.” Eight years after his closest brother, Stewart was born at home in the midst of World War II.
The family was neither wealthy nor indigent; Stewart, the youngest, was spoilt and has described his upbringing as “fantastically joyful.” He failed the eleven plus test and had an unremarkable academic record at Highgate Primary School. He subsequently went to William Grimshaw Secondary Modern School in Muswell Hill, which ultimately became Fortismere School. The family resided above the newsagent’s business that his father purchased on Archway Road after retiring from the construction industry.
Stewart’s primary pastime was railroad modelling. On the “Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists” list published by Billboard magazine in 2008, he was listed as the 17th most successful artist. He was ranked No. 33 on Q Magazine’s list of the Top 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and is a Grammy and Brit Award winner. Stewart was first admitted to the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 as a solo performer, then to the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and then again in 2012 as a member of Faces.
His musical career officially began when Stewart started busking with a harmonica in 1962. He began singing and playing the harmonica with The Dimensions in 1963. Stewart began playing with Long John Baldry and the All Stars in 1964, and in 1967, he switched to the Jeff Beck Group. He joined the Faces in 1969, although he continued to pursue a solo career and put out his first record the same year.
Early Stewart records included elements of rock, folk, soul, and R&B. Every Picture Tells a Story, his third album released in 1971, was his breakthrough and the ballad “Maggie May” from it peaked at number one in the UK, US, Canada, and Australia. Never a Dull Moment, his 1972 follow-up album, peaked at number one in the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia as well. Its first track, “You Wear It Well,” was a modest success overseas and topped the charts in the UK.
Stewart continued to have a few more UK top 10 songs until the Faces split up in 1975. The following several major songs for Stewart were ballads, including “Sailing,” which was taken from the 1975 album Atlantic Crossing, which peaked at number one in the UK, Australia, and other countries but barely charted in North America. A Night on the Town, his sixth consecutive UK chart-topper, marked the start of a three-album streak in which each release reached the top spot in the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia. “Tonight’s the Night ” from that album spent over two months at the top of the charts in the US and Canada and reached the top five in other nations.
The rocker “Hot Legs” and the smash song “You’re in My Heart” may be found on the 1977 album Foot Loose & Fancy-Free. Blondes Have More Fun and the disco-infused “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” from it both peaked at number one in Canada, Australia, and the US, with “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” also reaching the top of the charts in the UK and other nations. In the Netherlands during the majority of the 1970s and in Sweden starting in 1975, Stewart’s albums often reached the top of the charts.
