Robert Taylor Bio

Robert Taylor was an American film and television actor and singer. He was one of the most beloved leading men in the history of cinema. Robert Taylor was born Spangler Arlington Brugh on August 5, 1911, and passed away on June 8, 1969. In 1934, Taylor signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which marked the beginning of his career in the film industry. The next year, he made his debut in the main role of Magnificent Obsession, which he won. In the late 1930s and 1940s, he appeared in films such as Camille, A Yank at Oxford, Waterloo Bridge, and Bataan, which contributed to a rise in his fame. During the course of World War II, he was a member of the United States Naval Air Forces and served in the capacity of a flying teacher. He also made an appearance in a number of films designed to educate other pilots. Between the years 1959 and 1962, he was a main cast member on the television show The Detectives Starring Robert Taylor. In 1966, he took over as presenter of the series Death Valley Days, which had previously been held by his buddy Ronald Reagan.

Between the years 1939 and 1952, Taylor was married to the actress Barbara Stanwyck. In 1954, he wed the actress Ursula Thiess, and the couple went on to have two children together. Taylor was a lifelong smoker who was diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of 57. Taylor was the only child of Ruth Adaline and Spangler Andrew Brugh, a farmer turned doctor. His mother’s maiden name was Stanhope, and his father was Brugh. In the early years of his youth, his family relocated multiple times, spending time respectively in the cities of Muskogee, Oklahoma; Kirksville, Missouri; and Fremont, Nebraska. By September of that year, the Brugh family had relocated to Beatrice, Nebraska, and they resided there for the next 16 years.

Taylor was a standout on the track and field team as a young man and was also a cellist in the symphony at his high school. After receiving his diploma, he enrolled in Doane College, which is located in Crete, Nebraska. During his time at Doane, he studied cello under the tutelage of Professor Herbert E. Gray, a musician whose work he respected and looked up to as a hero. Following Professor Gray’s announcement that he would be assuming a new post at Pomona College in Claremont, California, Taylor uprooted his life and headed west to pursue his education at Pomona.

He became a member of the university’s theatrical group, and in 1932, during a performance of Journey’s End, he was discovered by a talent scout working for MGM. After signing a deal with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for seven years, his starting income was $35 per week. However, by 1936, it had increased to $2500 per week. The production company decided to recast him as Robert Taylor. The 1934 comedy Handy Andy, starring Will Rogers and on loan to Fox Studios, was where he made his start in the film industry.

Accidentally, he found himself in the starring part for the first time. In 1934, Taylor was working for MGM as “the test boy,” a male juvenile who would be filmed alongside a variety of young ingenues in screen tests. His job included being filmed beside young actresses. MGM’s development of its new short-subject series Crime Does Not Pay started in late 1934 with the dramatic short Buried Loot. However, the actor who had been hired for the role became sick and was unable to participate in the series. In order to fill in for the absent actor, the director called in the stand-in for the audition. Because of the memorability of Taylor’s dramatic performance—in which he plays an embezzler who purposefully disfigures himself to evade detection—Taylor was quickly cast in starring roles in feature films.

During the latter part of the 1930s, Elizabeth Taylor was featured in a variety of films, including the musicals Broadway Melody and Broadway Melody, as well as the British comedy A Yank at Oxford with co-star Vivien Leigh. Throughout the years 1940 and 1941, he advocated for the United States to get involved in World War II and was very critical of the isolationist stance. During this period, he said that he was “one hundred percent pro-British.” In 1940, he collaborated with Leigh once again on the play Waterloo Bridge, which was directed by Mervyn LeRoy.

Taylor started veering away from his reputation as the ideal leading man about the same time that he was awarded the nick label “The Man with the Perfect Profile.” He did this by starting to act in more sinister parts in the year 1941. In the same year, he appeared in the titular role in Billy the Kid, and then the following year, he portrayed the same part in the film noir Johnny Eager with Lana Turner. Taylor made a significant contribution to the war effort by becoming a flight instructor in the United States Naval Air Corps after his role as a harsh sergeant in the 1943 film Bataan. In addition, he acted in a number of instructional films and provided the narration for the documentary The Fighting Lady, which was released in 1944. After the war, he played a string of challenging parts, such as the lead in the neo-noir film Undercurrent and the lead in the drama High Wall.

In 1949, he appeared with Elizabeth Taylor in the thriller film Conspirator. Hedda Hopper referred to the film as “another one of Taylor’s pro-British films” in her review of the movie. In response to this, Taylor said, “And it won’t be the last. However, both Hopper and Taylor were members of the anti-communist group known as the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals. Taylor’s pals John Wayne, Walt Disney, and Gary Cooper were all members of this organization.

Because of this, Hopper always talked well of Taylor, despite the fact that he disagreed with her on what she regarded as his “Anglophilia” and what he saw as her “Anglophobia” towards the English language. In the year 1950, Elizabeth Taylor was cast as General Marcus Vinicius in the film Quo Vadis, which also starred Deborah Kerr. The epic movie was a success, earning $11 million in its initial run at the box office. The next year, he was featured in the film adaptation of Walter Scott’s classic, Ivanhoe. This was followed by films shot in England in 1953 titled Knights of the Round Table and The Adventures of Quentin Durward. Ivanhoe was the only one of the three to meet with critical and commercial success. In the same year, Taylor also shot Valley of the Kings in Egypt.

By the middle of the 1950s, Taylor had begun to focus almost exclusively on Westerns, his favored subgenre of film. In 1955, he was one of the stars of the comedic western Many Rivers to Cross, which also featured Eleanor Parker. In 1958, he starred with Richard Widmark in the controversial western The Law and Jake Wade, which was directed by John Sturges. Also in 1958, he parted ways with MGM and established Robert Taylor Productions. The following year, he became the lead character on the television show The Detectives Starring Robert Taylor, which ran from 1959 through 1962. After the conclusion of the program in 1962, Elizabeth Taylor went on to star in a variety of films and television shows, such as “A House Is Not a Home” and “Hondo” episodes one and two.
