Robert Pinsky is one of the foremost poet-critics in America. In 1962, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University. In 1966, he received his Master of Arts degree and his Doctor of Philosophy degree in philosophy from Stanford University, where he was also a Wallace Stegner Fellow in creative writing. At the Founding Hospital, published in 2016, and Selected Poems, published in 2012, are two of his most recent publications.
His most recent contributions to the world of poetry editing include the collections The Mind Has Cliffs of Fall: Poems at the Extremes of Feeling (2019), and Singing School (2014). In addition to that, he translated Wallenstein (2013) by Friedrich Schiller. Pinsky is a former poetry editor for Slate and acted as the editor of the anthology collection The Best of the Best of American Poetry (2013), which was published to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the series The Best of American Poetry anthologies.
Pinsky’s criticism and poems reveal his desire for a current poetic language that speaks of a more extensive experience. He is sometimes referred to as the last of the “civic” or public poets, and this moniker is often applied to him. His stint as Poet Laureate of the United States, which began in 1997 when he was elected to the position, was distinguished by ambitious attempts to illustrate the power of poetry, not merely as an academic pursuit in the ivory tower but as a significant element of everyday life in the United States.
In an interview with the Christian Science Monitor, he shared his belief that “Poetry is an essential part of our intelligence, our ability to learn, our ability to remember, and the relationship between our bodies and minds.” “The highest purpose of poetry is to provide the reader with a one-of-a-kind sensation of coordination between the body, the emotions, and the mind.”
According to James Longenbach’s review in The Nation, The Sounds of Poetry is a short work that may serve as an introduction to the mechanics of poetry. David Barber, a writer for the monthly publication, pointed out that The Sounds of Poetry “is an achievement for which there is surprisingly little precedent: an authoritative yet accessible introduction to the tools of the poet’s trade that can be read with profit by the serious student and the amateur alike.”
According to Barber, the book is “less that of a solemn classroom lecture than that of a spirited audio tour,” in which Pinsky “offers up various devices and motifs for inspection and provides a lively running commentary on how to fine-tune the ear to respond to the distinctive verbal energies that make poetry “poetic.” Barber described the book as “less that of a solemn classroom lecture than that of a spirited audio tour.”
Pinsky picks on where he left off in his investigation of the significance of poetry to today’s democratic culture with the publication of Democracy, Culture, and the Voice of Poetry. David Bromwich, writing for The New Republic, said the following about the book he reviewed: “One is never in any doubt about the trend of Pinsky’s argument.
He encourages admiration not for what the poet accomplishes in creating a poem but rather for what the poet does in the front of reading the poem. The poet is mainly treated as an additional reader. The picture of someone reading a poem aloud to a group of people is where Pinsky gets the inspiration for his concept of the function of poetry in a democratic society.
Sadness and Happiness, which was Pinsky’s debut collection, garnered favorable comparisons to the works of Ranier Marie Rilke, James Wright, and Robert Lowell from reviewers. A writer for Yale Review named Louis L. Martz said, “Pinsky is the most exhilarating new poet that I have read since A. R. Ammons entered the scene.”
Pinsky’s second collection was a long poem, “An Explanation of America,” published as a book. In the same vein as Robert Lowell, Pinsky tried to comprehend the history of the United States by drawing parallels to ancient Rome. He has also won several additional awards. In addition, the Library of Congress chose him to be the Poet Laureate of the United States for an unusual third term, which he served from 1997 to 2000.
