American actor Robert Duvall received an “Academy Award” for his role in the drama film “Tender Mercies” (also known as a “Oscar”). On January 5, 1931, Robert Selden Duvall was born to William Howard Duvall and Mildred Virginia in San Diego, California, USA. His mother was a stage performer, while his father was a US Navy admiral from Virginia. His family tree has roots in England, Germany, Switzerland, France (through the Huguenots), Wales, and Scotland. His upbringing was strongly influenced by Christian Science principles.
His official schooling was at the ‘Severn School.’ After finishing high school in St. Louis, Missouri, at “The Principia,” he attended “Principia College” in Illinois. He attended New York’s ‘Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater’ from 1955 to 1957, where he was taught by Sanford Meisner. He met Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman there and became friends with them. He supported himself while pursuing acting training and doing odd jobs.
He had positions as a postal clerk, a ‘Macy’s’ store clerk, and a truck driver in the Big Apple. With Barbara Benjamin (1964–75), Gail Youngs (1982–86), Sharon Brophy (1991–1996), and Luciana Pedraza (1996–present), he tied the knot four times (2005). His own Tango Studio, with locations in both Argentina and the United States, is a hidden secret among his peers.
He has a full schedule due to his commitments at work and the ‘Robert Duvall Children’s Fund’ he co-founded with Pedraza. The group’s mission is to improve the lives of Argentine families by funding infrastructure upgrades, including new houses, schools, and hospitals. In the early 1950s, he embarked on a career as a professional actor. In a piece called “Laughter in the Stars,” based on “The Little Prince,” he portrayed a pilot.
A member of the United States Army, he served for a year from 1953 to 1954 after being conscripted. He participated in an amateur production of the comedy “Room Service” while serving in the military. He was cast in many parts in 1955, the year after his return to the stage after his release from the military. Playing such characters as “Eddie Davis” in “Time Out For Ginger” by Ronald Alexander, “Hal Carter” in “Picnic” by William Inge, “Charles Wilder” in “The Cat and the Canary” by John Willard, “Paris” in “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, and “John the Witchboy” in “Dark of the Moon” by William Berney and Howard Richardson.
This rising talent appeared in many plays in 1956, including “Dial M for Murder” by Frederick Knott, “Bus Stop” by Inge, and “I Am a Camera” by John van Druten. His acting abilities made him quite well-liked, and he was cast in many more parts. In 1957, he portrayed Mr Mayher from Agatha Christie’s “Witness for the Prosecution,” Hector from Jean Anouilh’s “Thieves’ Carnivall,” and Eddie Carbone from Arthur Miller’s “A View from the Bridge.”
There are other theatres he has performed in beside the Gateway Theatre: the Augusta Civic Theatre, the McLean Theatre, and Virginia and the Arena Theatre. He started out as a character actor and eventually rose to the top of the theatrical industry. In 1958, he made his Off-Broadway debut as “Frank Gardner” in “Mrs. Warren’s Profession,” a play by George Bernard Shaw. Other Off-Broadway works of his include Michael Shurtleff’s “Call Me by My Rightful Name” and William Snyder’s “The Days and Nights of BeeBee Fenstermaker.”
In 1959, he starred as Stanley Kowalski in “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams, Maxwell Archer in “Once More With Feeling,” Igor Romanoff in “Romanoff and Juliet” by Peter Ustinov, and Joe Mancuso in “The Happiest Millionaire” by Kyle Crichton. TV audiences first saw him in ‘Armstrong Circle Theater’ in 1959, in an episode named ‘The Jailbreak.’ Although his career trajectory was already on the upward, he did not break into the mainstream until 1962, when he starred in the film adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird. There were a number of films during the ’60s in which he had a supporting or even lead role.
He first appeared on Broadway in Frederick Knott’s Wait Until Dark in 1966, in the role of “Harry Roat, Jr.” After that, he was seen in ‘American Buffalo,’ a play by David Mamet, in which he played the role of Walter Cole. Instantly, he was recognised as a major player in the film business of Hollywood. His breakout role as “Tom Hagen” in the 1972 picture “The Godfather” occurred after he had already acted in a number of films. In the follow-up picture, released in 1974, he played the character of “Hagen” again.
The next year, he appeared in a supporting part in the film The Eagle Has Landed. In the supporting role of Lt. Colonel in the 1979 picture “Apocalypse Now,” he gave a performance that earned him a “Golden Globe” nomination. Network, The Great Santini, and The Betsy are just a few of his other movies from the ’00s. The 1980s were a fruitful decade for the actor, who won an “Academy Award” for “Best Actor” for his role in the film “Tender Mercies.” Aside from “Colors” and “The Natural,” two other of his publications from this decade are also noteworthy. He also had a role in the ‘Lonesome Dove’ miniseries.
Robert had as many as 21 film appearances in the ’90s, often appearing in four films each year. All of his movies were financially successful, but “The Apostle,” nominated for an Academy Award, and “A Civil Action” was particularly well received. He has also made a number of guest appearances on television, notably as Joseph Stalin in the critically acclaimed biopic Stalin, for which he won a Golden Globe. The role of Adolf Eichmann in The Man Who Captured Eichmann was likewise performed by him.
Three movies from the year 2000 featured him: “Gone in 60 Seconds,” “The 6th Day,” and “A Shot at Glory.” Movies such as “Assassination Tango,” “Gods and Generals,” “Open Range,” “Four Christmases,” “Thank You for Smoking,” and “Get Low” featured him thereafter. In the 2011 film Seven Days in Utopia, he portrayed the character of Johnny Crawford. His next year of publications included “Jayne Mansfield’s Car” and “Jack Reacher.”
