Robert Drewe Bio

Robert Drewe was born on 9 January 1943. The novelist in Robert Drewe couldn’t resist the National Library’s sepia lithograph. A young boy in red shorts leans on a milestone on a meandering country road in England in this 1866 painting. There’s a winner’s sash hanging from the landmark. John Day was dubbed the “Australian Child Phenomenon” for his incredible success at such a young age.

He was 10 years old, weighed four stone, and held the title of junior world champion in the sport of “pedestrianism” at the height of its popularity as a spectator sport in the 19th century. Throughout history, “he was the youngest world champion ever,” Drewe reminisces.

His curiosity was sparked, so he continued to investigate. It turns out that Day became an apprentice jockey when he was young, and in 1870, at the age of 14 years old, he rode a bay gelding named Nimblefoot to victory in the Melbourne Cup. “I remember thinking, ‘This is incredible! Robert Duncan Drewe’s childhood was spent in Perth. As a journalist, he contributed to the West Australian in 1961, the Australian from 1970 to 1974 as a columnist and literary editor, and the Age as bureau head in the years between 1965 and 1970. From 1973 to 1980, he covered international affairs as a foreign correspondent for the Bulletin, and from 1976 to 1982, he served as a special correspondent. Two Walkley Awards, Australia’s most prestigious journalism honor, were given to him for his contributions to the Bulletin.

He began writing fiction, starting with The Savage Crows, in the 1970s. Six more novels, several plays, memoirs, autobiographies, and essays have followed since then. Drewe served as a Writer-in-Residence at the University of Western Australia in 1976 and at La Trobe University in 1986, and he was an Australian Creative Fellow from 1992 to 1996. Both The University of Queensland and The University of Western Australia have awarded him honorary doctorates in literature and letters, respectively.

Drewe has published novels, short tales, plays, and critical essays. His approach regularly veers towards black comedy, and his tone has been regarded as dismal. The conflict between Aboriginal and White Culture in Australia, Individual Roles in Society, Cultural Mythology, and the Media’s Moral and Social Responsibilities are among his favorite topics of inquiry.

Drewe thought he’d discovered the protagonist for his next book in Day, but his attempts to learn more about the boy’s life following his success in two sports led nowhere. The “Child Phenomenon from Australia” was gone. “So I decided I wanted to make up an imaginary life for him,” he explains. “And I went ahead and did that.”

Despite their obvious differences, Drewe’s Nimblefoot and Michael Winkler’s Grimmish, the first self-published book to be shortlisted for the Miles Franklin, share certain thematic similarities. Blending reality and fiction and strong, fractured pictures — and a good dose of humor — both chronicle the grueling lives of improbable Australian sporting champions around the turn of the century.

Nimblefoot is a “book of abundance… every detail is detailed, every particular is particularised,” as Winkler put it in Australian Novel Review. He called Nimblefoot “a wild thing” in a later phone call to the Guardian.

Drewe’s house in the northern rivers area of New South Wales is a bit chaotic, but that’s where we’re meeting. While he was away at his other home in Western Australia when the February floods came, this one was flooded and left submerged for three months. There was an “extraordinary smell” waiting for him as he opened the door. The mold growing up the wall seemed alive, like an extraterrestrial creature. All of his published works and archival materials were made of paper pulp.

“That made me sick,” he says, explaining that he was hospitalized due to heart problems. His daughter Amy passed away in November, just three months before the project was completed. “We as a family are still processing that.”

Drewe has seven children from four different marriages, and he is widely regarded as a devoted parent. His loved ones think that writing helped ground him as he transformed his crushing loss into some of the most inventive writing of his career.

The Bodysurfers, a collection of short tales he published in 1983, marked his breakthrough by establishing the beach as an integral setting for the drama of Australian life. It was so infectiously joyful, sandy, and alluring that it spawned numerous film, tv, radio, and stage adaptations. It has been available to the public for about forty years.

Now that he’s older, his wit and sense of humor, along with his creative energy, seem to be flourishing. His novel Whipbird, published in 2017, was a scathing critique of upper-middle-class existence. Writing serious literature isn’t as appealing to me as writing lighter fare. He explains, “My sense of humor has evolved from where it was when I first started out. The Australian establishment back then was “old and tweedy and very loath to let you through the portals,” the author writes. Everything was written from a rural perspective, with almost no references to city or suburbia. There were many squatters, and women were often seen mooning each other under the jacaranda tree. But now it’s a lot less restricted, and that makes me happy.
