Ricki-Lee Coulter Bio

Ricki-Lee Coulter was born on November 10.  In 2006, Coulter became a member of the all-female pop group Young Divas, but the following year, she went back to focusing on her solo career.

Her second studio album, Brand New Day, came out in August of 2007 and quickly went gold. It produced three top 10 singles, with “Can’t Touch It” being the highest, peaking at #2 on the ARIA Singles Chart and earning platinum status as a result. Coulter signed a worldwide recording contract with EMI in 2011, leaving Shock Records. Released in October 2011, “Raining Diamonds” is the first song off her upcoming third studio album. As it entered the charts in the top 20, the song was immediately certified platinum. In addition to his musical career, Coulter has also dabbled in radio and television. In 2008 and 2009, she returned as a co-host on Australian Idol. In 2010, she became a regular host on Nova FM in Sydney.

Born in Auckland, New Zealand on November 10th, 1985, Ricki-Lee Coulter is the daughter of John and Loretta Coulter. Coulter and her family moved to Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, when she was barely three weeks old. Jodie Coulter’s older sibling. Coulter’s enthusiasm for Queensland netball dates back to her elementary school years. After reconstructive surgery on a badly wounded knee, Coulter was informed she would never play netball again. Coulter’s singing talent was discovered by her mother months later when she heard her practising in her room. After that, Coulter kept throwing concerts in the Brisbane and Gold Coast areas, featuring live musicians. She also performed in many musical school productions, including Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, Cats, Rent, The Boyfriend, The Phantom of the Opera, Grease, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

In 2004, during her audition for the second season of Australian Idol, Coulter performed “Don’t Let Go” by En Vogue. The three judges were blown away by her performance, and she advanced to the next round of the theatre competition. After the theatre rounds, the top 30 contestants were announced, and Coulter was one of them. In the third act, she sang Barry White’s “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Baby.” Coulter was one of the top 12, along with Casey Donovan and Dan O’Connor. Throughout the competition, she was a frontrunner for the crown, however, she was eliminated in the seventh and final rounds. Judge Ian “Dicko” Dickson, when asked about Coulter’s resignation, referred to it as a scandal. Coulter’s inability to hide her disappointment and anger upon learning of her dismissal became front-page news. Coulter joined the previous week’s elimination of Daniel Belle as the only contestant to be eliminated without ever reaching the bottom three or two.

Once Coulter departed American Idol, Sony BMG gave her a recording contract. She declined, instead choosing to record with Australia’s biggest independent label, Shock. Coulter’s debut single, “Hell No!,” was released in June of 2005. After reaching number five on the ARIA Singles Chart, the song was certified gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) for sales of 35,000 copies. After the popularity of the single, on October 3, 2005, Coulter released his debut album, also titled Coulter. Gold was awarded for “Sunny,” the album’s second single. It peaked at No. 8 on the ARIA Singles Chart. “Breath,” the album’s third and final track, peaked at number fourteen on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 2006, Sony BMG persuaded “Idol” contestants Coulter, Paulini, Emily Williams, and Kate DeAraugo to establish the all-girl band Young Divas and embark on a 17-date national tour to promote each member as a solo artist. The group released a cover of Donna Summer’s classic “This Time I Know It’s for Real” on May 7, 2006, to promote their upcoming tour, which would involve performances of both individual and group works by each member. The Australian Recording Industry Association certified the record platinum after it sold over 70,000 copies (ARIA). It was the second-most-played single in Australia. The band’s second hit, a cover of Lonnie Gordon’s “Happenin’ All Over Again,” peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified gold.

On November 18, 2006, the Young Divas released their self-titled debut album, which featured covers of classic disco and pop tunes. After entering position four on the ARIA Albums Chart, the album was certified double platinum. Coulter announced her retirement from the Young Divas on June 22, 2007, in order to focus on a solo career and marry her fiance, Jamie Babbington. She explained her choice to pursue a solo career by saying, “I just couldn’t do it all,” in an interview with Qconfidential. In time, Australian Idol 2006 runner-up Jessica Mauboy succeeded Coulter.

Brand New Day premiered in Japan on January 9, 2008. Later the same month, Coulter accompanied Hillary Duff on the Australian leg of her Dignity Tour. In March of 2008, she embarked on her first headlining tour in the United States. Coulter’s singles compilation, Ricki-Lee: The Singles, came out on November 8, 2008. The album’s lead single, “Wiggle It,” reached number 11 on the ARIA Singles Chart and featured Australian rapper Samir.
