Rick Riordan was born on June 5, 1964, in San Antonio, Texas, as Richard Russell Riordan Jr. Rick Riordan Sr., his father and a former teacher, now works as a realtor. Lyn Belisle, an English major at Trinity University, teaches computer applications and graphic design.
Rick, his parents’ only kid, had always been a creative child, and his parents aided him by reading him stories. They constructed a flag to fly over their tent while camping at Port Aransas, claiming to be constructing a mediaeval castle.
Rick was largely raised by his mother when his parents divorced in the 1970s. He admired and looked up to his father as a role model, saying that “the foundation for who I would become was established in those early years, observing and learning from my father.”
He was a big fan of Greek mythology as a kid, but his favourite book was The Lord of the Rings. He also authored a number of short stories, sending them out for publication but never receiving a response, receiving his first rejection letter from the ‘Isaac Asimov Science Fiction’ magazine in 1978.
He graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1982 and enrolled at North Texas State University in Denton, where he temporarily studied music and led a folk-rock band. He transferred to the University of Texas at Austin shortly after, where he studied English and history. He received his diploma in 1986.He went on to the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he earned his teaching credential.
Rick Riordan began his teaching career at a San Antonio public school as an English and social science teacher. He later relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area and began teaching at various schools, including the Presidio Hill School.
He was born in San Antonio and grew up there, so he wanted to write a “hard-boiled private eye novel” based in his hometown, which eventually became his debut book, ‘Big Red Tequila.’ It won him the Shamus Award and the Anthony Award the next year after it was published in 1997.
‘The Widower’s Two-Step,’ based on the same concept as ‘Big Red Tequila,’ was released in 1998. The ‘Tres Navarre’ series continued with ‘The Last King of Texas’ (2000), ‘The Devil Went Down to Austin’ (2001), ‘Southtown’ (2004), ‘Mission Road’ (2005), and ‘Rebel Island’ (2007).
While working on the Tres Navarre series, he also started creating a series of fantasy adventure novels. It all started in second grade, when his older son, who had been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, began studying Greek mythology and asked him to tell stories about it.
He began by narrating the Greek legendary tales he knew, as asked by his son. When his stock of known stories ran out, he started making them up, which led to the development of Percy Jackson, a fictional character who travelled through the United States in search of Zeus’s lightning bolt.
On his son’s advice, he had Percy Jackson’s storey published as “The Lightning Thief” in 2005. Four further volumes on the same concept followed: ‘The Sea of Monsters’ (2006), ‘The Titan’s Curse’ (2007), ‘The Battle of the Labyrinth’ (2008), and ‘The Last Olympian’ (2010). (2009).
He switched his attention to Egypt after finishing the Percy Jackson trilogy, publishing ‘The Red Pyramid’ in 2010, ‘The Throne of Fire’ in 2011, and ‘The Serpent’s Shadow’ in 2012. He continued to write other books at the same time, such as the “Heroes of Olympus” series, “The Kane Chronicles” series, “The 39 Clues” series, and so on.
