Bio

In the previous NASCAR Grand National and Winston Cup Series, Richard Lee Petty, well known by his stage moniker “The King,” competed in stock car racing from 1958 to 1992. He is most known for having driven the No. 43 Plymouth/Pontiac for Petty Enterprises. A record 200 races were won throughout his career, and he was the first driver to win the Cup Series title seven times. This includes winning a record 27 race in one season, as well as a record seven Daytona 500 victories. He is one of the most admired individuals in all of motorsports and is statistically the most accomplished driver in the history of the sport. Petty continues to be actively involved in the sport as the owner of a NASCAR Cup Series team  as well as the Level Cross, North Carolina-based automobile modification and restoration business Petty’s Garage. Petty was born in Level Cross, North Carolina. He is the elder brother of NASCAR driver Maurice Petty and the son of Elizabeth Petty  and Lee Arnold Petty.

He received his education at Randleman, North Carolina, and graduated from Randleman High School, where he played guard for the football team and earned All-Conference honours.  After earning his diploma in 1955, he enrolled in a business course at Greensboro Junior College and then started working for Petty Enterprises, his father’s auto racing firm. On July 18, 1958, 16 days after turning 21, he started his NASCAR career. At the CNE Stadium in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, he competed in his maiden race. In 1959, he had nine top-10 performances, including six Top 5 finishes, and was voted NASCAR Rookie of the Year. He had taken part in the first Daytona 500 at the brand-new Daytona International Speedway that year, but when his day was cut short by engine issues, he joined his father Lee’s pit crew, which went on to win the race.

Petty won his first race at Lakewood, Georgia, in 1959, but his father Lee objected and claimed the referees had made a scoring mistake. After many hours, Lee gained the victory. His first career victory came at the Charlotte Fairgrounds Speedway in 1960, when he came in second place in the NASCAR Grand National Points Race. His breakthrough year in 1963 saw him triumph at tracks like Martinsville and Bridgehampton. Driving a powerful Plymouth with a new Hemi engine, Petty won his first Daytona 500 in 1964, leading 184 of the 200 laps on the way to nine wins, more than $114,000, and his first Grand National title.

Due to NASCAR’s prohibition of the Hemi engine, Petty joined the Chrysler boycott and spent the most of 1965 racing in drag races. The Hemi was mounted by Petty Enterprises in the brand-new small Barracuda, and “OUTLAWED” was lettered on the door. On February 28, 1965, he wrecked this automobile at Southeastern Dragway in Dallas, Georgia, killing one kid, age 8, and wounding seven others.  Although Petty and his team reached settlements with the claims less than a month after they were filed, Petty, his father Lee, and Chrysler Corporation still faced lawsuits totalling more than $1 million.

A second Hemi Barracuda was subsequently constructed, this time with a modified wheelbase and ultimately with Hilborn fuel injection. A big “43 JR” was lettered on the door of this automobile. The vehicle had great success, taking first place in its class in the Bristol Spring Nationals and taking on well-known racers like Ronnie Sox, Don Nicholson, Phil Bonner, Huston Platt, Hubert Platt, and Dave Strickler in other match races.

Richard continued drag racing the 43 JR until the beginning of 1966, even after rejoining NASCAR once the Hemi was restored. ± On February 27, 1966, Richard Petty overcame a 2-lap deficit to win his second Daytona 500 when a rainstorm forced the race’s cancellation on lap 198 of 200. He became the first driver to win the contest twice as a result. He won the first race at Middle Georgia Raceway in 1966. During the 100-mile  race, Petty set a new half-mile NASCAR record for half-mile courses, averaging 82.023 mph.

In the end, he would win four races there, including one in 1970 when he was quite unwell before to the event. 1967 was a turning point. Petty set a record with a streak of 10 victories in a row and won 27 of the 48 races he competed in that year. His second Grand National Championship was successful. The Southern 500 at Darlington was one of the 27 triumphs, and it would be his lone Southern 500 triumph. King Richard became known for his supremacy throughout this season. Previously, he was referred to as “the Randleman Rocket.”

Petty won 16 races in 1968, including the last contest held at Occoneechee Speedway. When Ford debuted the Ford Torino Talladega in 1969, their manufacturer participation in NASCAR greatly increased. In particular, on super-speedway tracks longer than a mile, the Talladega was created to provide Ford a competitive racing edge by being quicker and more aerodynamic.

Due to his opinion that the Plymouth was not competitive on super-speedways, Petty moved manufacturers to Ford; he wanted a slick Dodge Daytona but Chrysler officials demanded he remain with Plymouth. He would finish second in points after winning 10 races. Petty went back to Plymouth for the 1970 campaign after being victorious in 1970 in the svelte new Plymouth Superbird with the shark nose and towel rack wing. In the Pixar film Cars, in which Richard and Lynda Petty provided the voices, Petty is portrayed by this vehicle.

In a record 1,184 starts over the course of his 35-year career, Petty achieved a record 123 pole positions and nearly 700 top 10 finishes, including 513 consecutive starts from 1971 to 1989. Petty was the first racer to win on his 500th attempt, and Matt Kenseth followed suit in 2013. 2010 saw his induction into the first class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.  Second-generation driver Petty is. His father, Lee Petty, was a three-time NASCAR champion and the first person to win the Daytona 500 in 1959.

Kyle, one of his sons, was a NASCAR driver. On May 12, 2000, five weeks after Lee’s passing, his grandson Adam was killed in a practise accident at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Austin Petty, the brother of Adam, helps run Victory Junction, a SeriousFun Children’s Network camp that the Pettys started after Adam passed away. In 1958, Petty wed Lynda Owens. After a protracted fight with cancer, she passed away on March 25, 2014, at the age of 72, at her home in Level Cross, North Carolina. Kyle Petty, Sharon Petty-Farlow, Lisa Petty-Luck, and Rebecca Petty-Moffit were their four offspring.

The family lives in Level Cross, North Carolina, where Petty was raised. Previously situated in the neighbourhood of Randleman, North Carolina, the Richard Petty Museum returned to its original site in Level Cross in March 2014. He also had a cameo as The King, a figure loosely based on himself, in the films Cars and Cars 3, where the character is looking forward to winning his last race before retiring.
