Born Richard Tiffany Gere on August 31, 1949, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, Richard Gere is an American actor and humanitarian who is arguably best known for his depiction of genteel characters in romance films. Richard Gere’s full name is Richard Tiffany Gere. Upstate New York was Gere’s home during his formative years. In 1967, he received a gymnastics scholarship and enrolled at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. However, he dropped out of college after just two years in order to pursue a career as a musician. He started his acting career by participating in several summer programs around New England after performing in a number of bands.
After appearing with the Provincetown Players on Cape Cod and with the Seattle Repertory Theatre, he was cast in the supporting role of an understudy for the rock musical Grease on Broadway in the year 1972. The next year, Gere gave a performance as the principal character in a play that was being shown in London. His debut film, Report to the Commissioner (1975), featured him in a supporting part, but the performance that brought him widespread acclaim was the one he gave with Diane Keaton in Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977), a dramatic character study of a disturbed young lady.
Gere’s roles in films like American Gigolo (1980), in which he played an escort for older women, and Terrence Malick’s Days of Heaven (1978), about a young couple and their relationship with a farmer in Texas, contributed to his reputation as a sex symbol. Both of these films were directed by Malick. An Officer and a Gentleman were released in 1982, and Gere appeared in it as the young Zack Mayo, a contender for a position in the navy. The movie was a commercial success, and it helped Gere establish himself as a significant celebrity in the process.
After a string of films that were met with negative reviews, he finally found success with Pretty Woman (1990), in which he portrayed a successful businessman who at first works with and then falls in love with a prostitute (played by Julia Roberts). Primal Fear (1996), a courtroom drama in which he starred as an attorney who defends an altar boy (played by Edward Norton) accused of murdering a prominent priest, earned him praise from film critics. In 1999, he reteamed with Roberts in the lighthearted comedy Runaway Bride, which also earned him praise from the critics.
Gere was nominated for a Golden Globe for his portrayal of defense attorney Billy Flynn in the film version of the Broadway musical Chicago, which he starred in and won in the year 2002. Clifford Irving, an author who fabricates a biography about Howard Hughes, was the character that he played in the 2006 film The Hoax, which was inspired by a real-life event. Later in his career, Gere had an appearance in the highly acclaimed film I’m Not There in the role of Billy the Kid, one of six fictitious incarnations of Bob Dylan (2007). In 2008, he collaborated with his co-star from the film “Unfaithful,” Diane Lane, on the romantic drama “Nights in Rodanthe,” which was adapted from a book written by Nicholas Sparks.
Amelia (2009), a biopic about the American flyer Amelia Earhart (played by Hilary Swank), is one of the latter films starring Richard Gere. Another of Gere’s later films, Brooklyn’s Finest, is a crime thriller (2009). In the thriller Arbitrage (2012), in which he starred as a scandal-plagued venture capitalist, and in the unsettling drama The Benefactor (2015), in which he played a wealthy drug addict who wheedles and bribes his way into the lives of a young couple, he also had a role. Both of these films were released in 2012. Gere’s performance as the titular character, Norman, in the film Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer received a lot of positive feedback from critics (2016). His latter work includes the BBC series MotherFatherSon, which consists of eight episodes (2019).
Gere is revered for his dedication to Buddhism in addition to his work in the humanitarian sector. He became a follower of the faith in the middle of the 1970s and went to Tibet in 1978, at which time he spent time in refugee camps. In later years, he joined the Dalai Lama in his exile to study under him. Gere contributed a large amount of time and money to the fight for Tibetan independence, in addition to a wide range of other charity acts, such as the preservation of cultural traditions and the treatment of those who were afflicted with HIV/AIDS. Throughout the course of his career, Richard Gere has portrayed a variety of parts in films and other projects that have garnered critical praise.
These performances have also resulted in several award nominations and victories for Gere. However, the actor believes that out of all of the movies in his body of work, there is one that should have garnered more appreciation than it did. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Richard Gere discussed his upcoming romantic comedy, Maybe I Do. He mentioned that there are a few of his films that he believes deserved to break through more than they did, but that The Hoax was “a really good film” that just couldn’t quite break through. Gere said that he feels The Hoax deserved to break through more than it did.
The film adaptation of Clifford Irving’s novel of the same name, which was released in 2006, portrayed the narrative of Irving’s real-life intricate deception revolving around a fictitious autobiography of Howard Hughes and was based on the book of the same name. The film also featured Alfred Molina, Marcia Gay Harden, Hope Davis, Julie Delpy, and Stanley Tucci in supporting roles. Richard Gere portrayed Clifford Irving in the film. They garnered positive reviews from film critics but failed to do well financially at the box office. Despite having a budget of $25 million, the movie only brought in $11.7 million at the box office.
