Bio

William Whalley British director, producer, and screenwriter Anthony Curtis CBE. On November 8th, 1956, he was born in the UK. Curtis was born in the New Zealand city of Wellington. It should be mentioned that he and Anthony J. Curtis are both the children of Glyness S. Curtis attended Papplewick School, which is situated in Ascot, Berkshire. He briefly resided in Warrington, Cheshire, in the 1970s, and it was there that he attended Appleton Grammar School to complete his education. He then received a scholarship to study at Harrow School, where he joined the editorial board of The Harrovian, the school’s monthly journal. He asserts that he “learned all of the qualities that made me a sketch writer” at Harrow School. Curtis produced a school performance of Joe Orton’s play The Erpingham Camp while he was a student at Harrow; this divisive choice was given the “go-ahead” by James Morwood, his classics teacher.

I tried to invent things out of nothing when I produced reviews, commentaries, and humorous articles. Later, Curtis claimed that Morwood’s support had enabled him to realize that it was acceptable “to push limits and to be humorous.” When Curtis became 18 and took over as head of his house, he forbade fagging at the school since he did not support it. He collaborated with Rowan Atkinson at the Oxford Revue, and during his breakthrough performance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, he appeared in the same production as him. As a result, he was given a commission by BBC Radio 3 in 1978 to co-write the program The Atkinson People with Atkinson. In the end, this series aired in 1979. After that, he began writing comic scripts for film and television.

He contributed regularly as a writer to the BBC comedy series Not the Nine O’Clock News, where he and Howard Goodall wrote many of the show’s songs as well as numerous scathing skits, occasionally in partnership with Rowan Atkinson. He also wrote a lot of the tunes for the program. The song “Meaningless Songs,” which was a parody of the Bee Gees’ disco sound, was written by Curtis and Philip Pope in 1980. The Hee Bee Gee Bees released the song as a single. Curtis provided scripting to the ITV satirical puppet show Spitting Image during the years of 1984 and 1985. Curtis had already begun writing feature film scripts by that point. His debut feature, “The Tall Guy,” was a romantic comedy that Working Title films released in 1989. Jeff Goldblum, Emma Thompson, and Rowan Atkinson acted in the movie. The television movie Bernard and the Genie followed that in 1991.

For Dawn French in 1994, Curtis created and co-wrote the comedy series The Vicar of Dibley, which went on to become a huge success. In a 2004 online survey titled “Britain’s Best Sitcom,” it was ranked as the third-best sitcom in British history, with Blackadder taking the top spot. As a result, Curtis is the only screenwriter to have produced two shows that were rated in the top 10 shows in the survey.

The Blackadder series, which ran from 1983 to 1989, was written by Curtis after he first worked with Atkinson and then Ben Elton. The show’s seasons each concentrated on a specific era in British history. While Curtis was the only writer to feature in every episode of Blackadder, Atkinson was the only actor to play the lead character throughout. The two actors continued to collaborate on the television comedy Mr. Bean, which ran from 1990 until 1995.

He received the best mark possible in the Bachelor of Arts English Language and Literature program at Christ Church, Oxford. One of the first persons he worked with was Rowan Atkinson when they were both Oxford University undergraduates. They were both members of the Experimental Theatre Club’s scriptwriting crew for the Etceteras revue. He appeared in the company’s performance of “After Eights” at the Oxford Playhouse in May 1976. His father was a Czechoslovak immigrant who left his country at the age of thirteen and finally made his way up the corporate ladder at Unilever. When Curtis was 11 years old, his family moved from a number of different countries where they had lived during his childhood to the United Kingdom. Sweden and the Philippines were among these places.
