Rebecca Sugar Bio

Rebecca Rea Sugar is a well-known American animator and screenwriter. She was born on July 9, 1987, in the United States. Sugar was described as the first woman to do so prior to coming out as non-binary. She is best known for being the creator of the Cartoon Network series Steven Universe, which makes her the first non-binary person to independently produce a series for the network; prior to coming out as non-binary, Sugar was called the first woman to do so.

Up until the year 2013, Sugar worked as a writer on the animated television series Adventure Time as well as a storyboard artist. Due to the work she has done on the two programs, she has been nominated for seven Primetime Emmy Awards. Sugar identifies as she/her and they/them pronouns, as she is non-binary and genderqueer.  Sugar is also bisexual. Sugar’s sexual orientation has provided her with the motivation to speak out about the significance of LGBT representation in the arts, particularly in the entertainment industry that caters to children.

Sugar grew up in the Sligo Park Hills neighborhood of Silver Spring, Maryland, in the United States. She was a semi-finalist in the arts category of the Presidential Scholar competition, and she was the recipient of Montgomery County’s prestigious Ida F. Haimovicz Visual Arts Award, both of which are high schools that are located in the state of Maryland.

She attended both Montgomery Blair High School and the Visual Arts Center at Albert Einstein High School at the same time. During her time at Blair, she participated in the Newspaper Individual Writing and Editing Contest and won first place in the comics category. These comics were published in the school newspaper, Silver Chips, and were titled “The Strip.” In 2005, “The Strip” published a comic that criticized the new grading policy implemented by MCPS. After that, she continued her education at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Rob Sugar, Rebecca Sugar, and Rebecca’s younger brother Steven were brought up with what he refers to as “Jewish sensibilities,” and to this day, both siblings attend the lighting of Hanukkah candles with their parents while doing so through Skype. Rob Sugar is Rebecca Sugar’s father. Sugar made a number of short animated films while she was a student at the School of Visual Arts, one of which was titled Johnny Noodleneck (2008).

2009 was the year that she penned and animated the short film titled “Singles.” A longtime colleague of hers, Ian Jones-Quartey, worked on the movie as an assistant animator, assistant inker, and voice actor, while Sugar’s brother Steven Sugar worked as an assistant colorist. Sugar used this movie as her thesis project and finished it.

Sugar was also instrumental in the production of the animated series Workforce, which was developed by Ian Jones-Quartey and Jim Gisriel and premiered on YouTube in the year 2007. Sugar was a key ingredient in this project. In particular, she made contributions to the character design and background design of the animation. Sugar released her debut graphic novel in 2010, titled Pug Davis. The book follows the adventures of an astronaut dog and his gay sidekick Blouse.

In addition to that, she is famous for her graphic novel titled “Don’t Cry for Me, I’m Already Dead,” which tells the story of two brothers whose bond through their love of The Simpsons leads to a tragic outcome. During the first season of Adventure Time, Sugar initially joined the cast and crew of the program in the capacity of a storyboard revisionist. Due to the high caliber of her previous work, she was elevated to the position of storyboard artist within a month of being hired, and she made her debut during the production of the second season of the show.

“It Came from the Nightosphere” was the title of her debut episode. She was urged by the creative team to integrate her “own life experiences into the character of Marceline” when she was working on the show. She explained it thus way in an interview with Paper Magazine: “She connected with indie and underground comic artists who worked on the show, like Pendleton Ward, Patrick McHale, and Adam Muto, who told her to do what she would do when drawing comics and to not hold anything back.” [Comics artists] “Pendleton Ward, Patrick McHale, and Adam Muto”.

She noted that some of the upcoming shifts in animation will be influenced by what the show was able to accomplish because it was “very artist-driven” by independent comic artists such as herself. Sugar began production on Steven Universe even as she was still engaged in her work on Adventure Time. She kept working on Adventure Time up until the fifth season of the program, at which point she decided to leave so that she could concentrate on Steven Universe.

“Simon & Marcy” was her final episode for Adventure Time; after that episode, it “became impossible to do” her job on two series at the same time. In the past, she had also experienced problems when working on the creation of the Adventure Time episode titled “Bad Little Boy.” Sugar made a brief appearance to contribute to the show by penning the song “Everything Stays” for the seventh season miniseries Stakes as well as the song “Time Adventure” for the series finale Come Along with Me.

The first episode of Steven Universe aired on November 4, 2013, and the final episode aired on January 21, 2019. During the entirety of the show’s run, she served as an executive producer, and she also worked as a storyboard artist on some episodes. She served as director for the feature-length television movie titled Steven Universe: The Movie, which debuted on Cartoon Network on September 2, 2019, and takes place after the fifth season of the Steven Universe television series. The film was followed by an epilogue limited series named Steven Universe Future, which began airing on December 7, 2019, and ran until it came to an end on March 27, 2020.

Sugar served as executive producer for both the movie and the limited series. Sugar has expressed its thoughts on the significance of including LGBT characters and topics in children’s entertainment, particularly media aimed towards younger audiences. Sugar made the following statement on the podcast QUEERY hosted by Cameron Esposito: “I want to champion LGBTQIA, all of it, content… in G-Rated, family entertainment.” I want to keep doing that until the end of time.

She went on to describe how coming to grips with her own identity as bisexual and non-binary has been facilitated by her viewing of Steven Universe. She is of the opinion that children who identify as gay can be assisted in avoiding feelings of shame associated with their identities if they are given early and positive exposure to the LGBT community.
