Raymond Jean Bourque is a Canadian ice hockey player who retired from the professional ranks. He was born on December 28, 1960. He has scored the most goals, assisted on the most assists, and scored the most points in his career by a defenseman in the National Hockey League. Five times he was awarded the James Norris Memorial Trophy, which is given to the greatest defenseman in the National Hockey League. Six other times, he finished in second place for the trophy. Additionally, he came in second place in the vote for the Hart Memorial Trophy on two separate occasions, which is quite uncommon for a defenseman. During his debut season with the Boston Bruins, which was 1979–80, Bourque had an instant impression by scoring a goal in his very first game, which was played against the Winnipeg Jets. He was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy for Rookie of the Year and was chosen for the First Team All-Stars. Bourque, seeing that the end of his career was drawing close and that the Bruins were headed in the wrong path, sought a trade away from the struggling Bruins in order to increase his chances of winning the Stanley Cup. Along with another veteran, Dave Andreychuk, Bourque was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Brian Rolston, Martin Grenier, Samuel Phlsson, and a first-round draft selection in the year 2000.
Even though Bourque was just a member of the Avalanche for a total of one and a half seasons, he established himself as a leader not only on the ice but also in the dressing room. In the year 2000, he assisted the Avalanche, who had been struggling, in improving their play and winning their division. During the postseason, they were able to progress all the way to the conference finals, but they were ultimately defeated by the Dallas Stars after a tough seven-game series. In the dying minutes of Game 7, Bourque missed a goal that would have tied the game for his team, who had come back from a 3-0 hole in the third period to level the game at 3–2.
Bourque and veteran Rick Middleton were elected co-captains of the team in 1985, after the departure of Terry O’Reilly as the captain of the Bruins to become the club’s coach. Middleton was designated to wear the “C” during home games, while Bourque was designated to wear it during away games. Following Middleton’s departure from the Bruins in 1988, Bourque was promoted to the position of single-team captain and remained in that role for the duration of his time with the Bruins. In doing so, he overtook Dit Clapper as the player with the longest tenure as captain of the Boston Bruins, and he also surpassed Alex Delvecchio of the Detroit Red Wings as the player with the longest tenure as captain of a club in the history of the National Hockey League, a record that has since been exceeded by Steve Yzerman of the Red Wings.
Bourque was a reliable contributor to the Boston Bruins for 21 seasons, from 1979 to 2000. He was renowned for his ability to combine offensive talent at a level that very few defensemen in the history of the league had ever attained with almost unrivaled defensive acumen. For example, he was the perennial shot accuracy champion at the All-Star Games.
