Bio

A novelist, artist, and cartoonist from England is named Ralph Steadman. When he first joined an advertising firm early in his life, his passion for cartooning and sketching was kindled. He made it a point to study the craft at several different British institutions, including the School of Printing and Graphic Arts, East Ham Technical College, and Percy V. Bradshaw’s correspondence school.

For many years, Steadman provided his political, satirical, and darkly humorous drawings to newspapers in England and America such as Kemsley Newspaper Group, Daily Mail, New York Times, etc. His collaborations with American writer Hunter S. Thompson, which include “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” “Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72,” “Kentucky Derby” for Scanlan, etc., are widely regarded as his most well-known works. Since of his direct approach to politics and political people, his cartoons were seen as subversive and gloomy.

However, by the early 1980s, he had begun to lose interest in political cartooning because he believed that there was little substance left in global politics. He started producing his own illustrated books and published several works of art, including “Alice in Wonderland,” “I Leonard,” “Doodaa,” etc. He has received honors such as the Certificate of Merit from the American Society of Illustrators, the W H Smith Illustration Award, the BBC Design Award, etc. Lionel Raphael Steadman, a business traveler who sold women’s apparel, was the father of Ralph Steadman, who was born in Wallasey, Cheshire, into a lower-middle-class family. His mother worked as a store clerk.

When Steadman reached the age of 16, he left Abergele Grammar School because he could not stand the overbearing power his headmaster imposed on him. He started working for the aviation firm De Havilland. Steadman joined Woolworths as a trainee manager after quickly becoming weary of the factory lifestyle. He was engaged in 1954 by McConnell’s Advertising Agency in Colwyn Bay.

During his National Service in the RAF in Britain from 1954 to 1956, Steadman also continued to enroll in Percy V. Bradshaw’s cartooning correspondence course since at this point his passion for illustration had developed. His parents paid for the course. Ralph was asked to create the wine catalogs for the wine retailer Oddbins in the 1980s. Many of his own publications, like “Sigmund Freud,” “The Big I Am about God,” “Doodaa,” etc., were written and drawn by him.

In 1989, Steadman and composer Richard Harvey co-wrote “The Plague and the Moonflower,” an oratorio for an eco-opera. Through the metaphorical love affair between the moonflower and the plague monster, it examines environmental degradation. In 1990, Ralph was asked to create a new ballet based on Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” for the Royal Opera House. Steadman himself had poured, flung, and smeared greasy paints all over the garments.

Charlie Paul’s documentary “For No Good Reason,” on Steadman’s career, had its world premiere at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. The movie took 15 years to create. He began sketching in 1955 and made weekly submissions to “Punch,” but it wasn’t until the following year that his first cartoon was printed in the Manchester Evening Chronicle. The topic of the cartoon was “Nasser and the Suez crisis.”

Steadman began working as a cartoonist at the Kemsley Newspaper Group in 1959. Editorial cartoons and a weekly panel featuring the imaginary adolescent female character “Teeny” were contributions he made to the publication. 8 He also took part-time painting classes from Leslie Richardson at East Ham Technical College at the same time. He used to report to work at Kemsley at ten in the morning and leave by three in the afternoon to go to college.

Steadman began working for himself after being let go from Kemsley and supplied his cartoons to Punch, the Daily Sketch, and the Daily Telegraph. Steadman sent a sketch titled “Plastic People” to Private Eye, and the editor of the magazine sent him five pounds with the comment, “More power to your elbow.” It was printed as a two-page spread in the journal.

On Leslie Richardson’s advice, he attended the London School of Printing and Graphic Arts from 1961 to 1965. He was underperforming commercially and was eclipsed by his former buddy and rival Gerry Scarfe, which contributed to his decline. After completing his education, Steadman was employed by Daily Mail in 1966 and given a sizable salary along with an E-type Jaguar. He was appointed artist-in-residence at Sussex University the following year.

He briefly worked for Rolling Stone in 1970 before being employed by the radical American publication Scanlan’s Monthly. The book “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” by Hunter S. Thompson was illustrated by Steadman the following year. By the end of 1970, Steadman had returned to London and was working as The Times’ second political cartoonist, covering the General Election.

Steadman produced political cartoons for the New Statesman between 1976 and 1980. His drawings started to take on a more primitive character. He worked at the National Theatre during this period and also provided writing for magazines like Rolling Stone and the New York Times, among others. Together, Ralph and Bernard Stone wrote children’s books, including the iconic Inspector Mouse and Emergency Mouse. Finally, Quasimodo Mouse was included in the triptic.
