Quincy Delight Jones Jr. is an American record producer, musician, songwriter, composer, arranger, and film and television producer. He was born on March 14, 1933. He has a 70-year career in the entertainment industry, with 80 Grammy Award nominations, 28 Grammy Awards, and the Grammy Legend Award in 1992.
Jones rose to popularity as a jazz arranger and conductor in the 1950s before moving on to pop music and film themes. For “The Eyes of Love” from the film Banning, Jones and his songwriting collaborator Bob Russell were the first African Americans to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1968. Jones was also nominated for an Academy Award for his work on the 1967 picture In Cold Blood, making him the first African American to be nominated twice in the same year. Jones produced three of Michael Jackson’s most successful albums, including Off the Wall (1979), Thriller (1982), and Bad (1987), from 1979 to 1987. Jones composed and conducted “We Are the World,” a charity song that garnered donations for Ethiopian famine victims in 1985.
Jones took a short job hosting the CBS Stage Show, which was broadcast live from Studio 50 in New York City and was hosted by Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey. Jones was a member of the studio band that accompanied 21-year-old Elvis Presley in his first six television appearances on January 28, February 4, 11, and 18, as well as March 17 and 24. Presley sang “Heartbreak Hotel,” which went to No. 1 and was named Pop Record of the Year by Billboard magazine. Jones went on a tour of the Middle East and South America sponsored by the United States Information Agency soon after as a trumpeter and musical director for Dizzy Gillespie.
He obtained a contract with ABC-Paramount and began his recording career as the leader of his band after his return. He moved to Paris in 1957 to study composition and theory with Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen, as well as perform at the Paris Olympia. He went on to work as the music director for Barclay, a French record label and Mercury’s licensee in the country.
Jones toured Europe with a number of jazz orchestras during the 1950s. He went on the road once more as the musical director of Harold Arlen’s jazz musical Free and Easy. In February 1960, a European tour ended in Paris. He built his big band “The Jones Boys” with eighteen musicians, using players from the Arlen performance as members. Eddie Jones, a double bassist, and Reunald Jones, a trumpeter, were among the musicians in the band. The band toured North America and Europe, and while the shows drew large crowds and rave reviews, the earnings were insufficient to sustain a band of this size.
The band disbanded, leaving Jones in financial ruin as a result of poor budgeting.”We had the world’s best jazz band, but we were starved. That’s when I realised there was both music and the music industry. I’d have to learn the distinction between the two if I was going to survive.”Jones received a personal loan and a position as musical director of Mercury’s New York branch thanks to Irving Green, the company’s CEO. Doug Moody, the owner of Mystic Records, was one of his collaborators.
Quincy Delight Jones Jr. was born on March 14, 1933, on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, to Sarah Frances (died 1999), a bank officer and apartment complex manager, and Quincy Delight Jones, a semi-pro baseball player and carpenter from Kentucky. Jones’ paternal grandmother was a former slave from Louisville, and his paternal grandpa was Welsh, as Jones later found. Jones learned one of his mother’s relatives was James Lanier, a relative of poet Sidney Lanier, with the help of novelist Alex Haley and Latter-day Saint scholars in Salt Lake City in 1972. According to Jones: “My grandmother was born there [on a farm in Kentucky] after he had a child with my great-grandmother.
We were able to track this back to the Laniers, Tennessee Williams’ family.” Jones ascribed some of his musicality to his Lanier immigrant ancestors after learning that they were French Huguenots with court musicians among their predecessors.
Jones had his DNA tested and genealogists examined his family history again for the 2006 PBS television programme African American Lives. His DNA shows that he is primarily African, but that both lines of his family had 34 percent European ancestry. Through his father, he has ancestors from England, France, Italy, and Wales, according to research. His mother’s family is from West and Central Africa, notably Cameroon’s Tikar tribe. He was entitled for membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans since his mother had European ancestry, including Lanier male relatives who fought for the Confederacy. Betty Washington Lewis, president George Washington’s sister, is among his relatives.
