Born Phylicia Ayers Allen on June 19, 1948, in Houston, Texas, United States, Phylicia Rashad is an American actress who first rose to prominence for her work in the television series The Cosby Show (1984–92). In 2004, she became the first African American woman to win a Tony Award for best actress for her performance in the play A Raisin in the Sun.
Allen was the second child born to Andrew Arthur Allen, a dentist, and Vivian Ayers Allen, a poet who was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Allen was the second of four children to be born to the couple. Her older brother, Andrew Arthur “Tex” Allen, Jr., went on to become a jazz pianist, while her sister, Debbie Allen, was a dancer, actor, and television producer and director. Her family was quite talented. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theatre from Howard University in Washington, District of Columbia, in the year 1970.
Almost immediately after that, she secured a position working with the Negro Ensemble Company in New York City. Before moving on to a career in television, Allen made her debut on Broadway in 1972. Prior to that, she appeared in supporting parts in the successful musicals The Wiz (1975) and Dreamgirls (1981) before making the move to the small screen. Allen was able to get a recurring part on the daytime serial drama One Life to Live in the year 1982.
After two years, comedian Bill Cosby cast her as his wife, attorney Clair Huxtable, on his revolutionary situation comedy The Cosby Show, which aired from 1984 through 1992. In order to accommodate the African American cast, Williams’ story of a wealthy Southern planter’s morally foundering family was moved to a different time frame than its original setting during the Jim Crow era. In the 2009 production of August: Osage County on Broadway, she played the role of a drug-addicted matriarch. The play was written by Tracy Letts. In subsequent years, Rashad supervised revival productions of a number of August Wilson plays.
These included a staging of “Fences” in New Haven, Connecticut, in the year 2013, and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in Los Angeles, California, in the year 2016, respectively. Rashad made his comeback to Broadway in 2022, starring in the play Skeleton Crew, which told the story of four autoworkers in Detroit during the financial crisis of 2007–2008. Rashad was awarded the Tony Award for best-featured actress in a play in recognition of her work in the play. The number of times that Rashad was seen on the big screen was not quite consistent.
In 2010, she appeared in the romantic comedy Just Wright, the story of mental illness Frankie & Alice, as well as the ensemble drama For Colored Girls, which was directed by Tyler Perry and adapted from Ntozake Shange’s 1975 play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf. In the television series Do No Harm, which aired in 2013, Rashad portrayed the role of the employer of a surgeon who suffered from a personality disorder similar to Jekyll and Hyde. She went on to have recurring parts in the television programs Empire and This Is Us; for her performance in the latter series, she was nominated for two Emmys.
Additionally, she was cast in the role of the main character’s instructor in the television series David Makes Man. In addition, Rashad continues to feature in movies, most notably as the wife of boxer Rocky Balboa’s buddy (and previous opponent) Apollo Creed in the Rocky (1976) sequels Creed (2015) and Creed II (2017). Creed was released in 2015. (2018). In the year 2020, she had roles in the crime drama directed by Tyler Perry, A Fall from Grace, as well as the horror movie Black Box.
