Peter Gardner Ostrum is an American veterinarian and former child actor. His lone film appearance was as Charlie Bucket in the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. He was born on November 1, 1957, in the United States. When talent agencies were searching for someone to play Willy Wonka, Ostrum was only 12 years old. Despite the fact that he had a good time working on the picture, when it was over he decided against signing a deal for three more movies. As a result of Ostrum’s decision to forego a career in cinema and theater, he is now reticent to talk about his one and only major role. He started a yearly custom of speaking to kids about the film in the year 1990, and he became a focus of fascination once again when the film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was released in cinemas in the year 2005.
When Ostrum returned from filming Willy Wonka, he was especially affected by the veterinarian who took care of the horses that belonged to his family. As a result, Ostrum developed an interest in the horses that belonged to his family. It was in 1984 that he graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University. Ostrum was a practicing physician and resident of Glenfield, New York, with his wife Loretta, where the couple had two children and reared their family. Ostrum reflected in the year 2000 that filming Willy Wonka in Munich was “kind of like being an exchange student for five months.”
Watching the development of Olympiapark for the 1972 Summer Olympics while he was in West Germany for five months is one of his most treasured memories. He also enjoyed working with Gene Wilder and Jack Albertson at that time. Since Ostrum had no prior experience in the film industry, Wilder took it upon himself to educate the young actor about the workings of the industry. Later on, Ostrum would characterize Wilder as a quirky but compassionate person who “treated people with respect and dignity.” Wilder was a close friend of Ostrum. The closeness that evolved between the two performers was such strong, despite the fact that they never saw each other again after shooting Wonka, Ostrum characterized Wilder’s death in 2016 as “like losing a parent.
On set, Ostrum received instruction for a total of three hours per day, but it was frequently just for thirty to sixty minutes at a time. Despite the fact that at his audition he had been told that it was likely that his singing would be edited and dubbed, Ostrum’s actual singing voice was ultimately the one that was used in the film, although with considerable edits. In an interview that took place in 2011, Ostrum related the tale of how the film’s director, Mel Stuart, handed him a clapperboard from the production of the movie and then asked him how he obtained it since he had forgotten that he had done so. The clapperboard is the sole memento that Ostrum took away from the set.
When Ostrum, who was just 13 years old at the time, completed filming Willy Wonka, David L. Wolper offered him a contract for three films. Ostrum turned down the offer. The young man revealed to Frawley Becker, who served as his Willy Wonka conversation coach, that he had rejected the contract in order to maintain “the freedom to choose what he played, and in what picture.” In January of 2018, Ostrum said that he sometimes misses acting, despite the fact that he does not miss the fast-paced aspect of the industry, but he is grateful that he was able to avoid having to make the transition from being a kid actor to an adult actor.
Ostrum was interested in cinema class during his senior year, and one of his professors piqued his interest in returning to the theater and acting, which prompted Ostrum to investigate these fields. After trying out for a number of roles but not being cast in any of them, Ostrum made the decision not to pursue it any further. After Ostrum finished his career in short films, he turned down requests from reporters and interviewers because he did not want to discuss the topic; “I wanted people to judge me based on who I was, not what I’d done.” Ostrum even lied to people for a period of time and said that his brother, not he, had appeared in the movie. This was something he did for a while. It took Ostrum years after relocating to Lowville, New York before he informed anyone there about his one-time celebrity; even his wife Loretta did not know about his part until he warned her about it just before she met his mother. He told his wife about it just before she met his mother.
Since 1990, Ostrum has given a presentation to the pupils of Lowville Academy once a year — on the final day of school, as a special treat — on his experience in Willy Wonka as well as his job in veterinary care. The presentation takes place on the same day every year. The children are mostly interested in the movie’s spectacular effects, and Ostrum responds to their inquiries by describing “what happened to Veruca, how did Violet blow up like a blueberry, how did Charlie fly with Grandpa Joe, and all those types of questions.”
It’s in my backyard—it’s become a big event in January and I like to support local activities, so I accepted an offer to participate at the 2018 Snowtown Film Festival in Watertown, New York, and answer questions from the audience following a screening of the film. Ostrum said that he had a good time re-watching the video for the event that took place in 2018 and that attendees had asked him “great questions.” It has been said that Ostrum is “the most famous man in Lowville,” which is the town where the local video rental business had to replace its copy of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory on VHS twice due to excessive wear.
